Most research shows that when you buy a car in the winter, you have a better chance to receive discounts or get other “extras” included in your deal. If you can’t wait until winter to buy a new car, here are some options to think about: Consider an older model. If you’re looking to buy a new car, think about buying last year’s model – especially if the new ones are moving onto the dealer’s lot. Salespeople will usually give you a better deal on an older model because they’re trying to sell their inventory. When is the Best Time to Buy a Car?

Shop when salespeople are more vulnerable. Shop at the end of the day or the end of the month or quarter. These are times when salespeople need to amp up their sales and you can get a better deal. Shop early in the week. When you shop on Monday or Tuesday, you may get more attention and a better deal than on Friday, Saturday or Sunday. Shop on Black Friday. While the world is shopping at malls and getting fantastic deals for holiday gifts, consider going to the dealership. Studies have shown that you may get a discount of up to 25% off the price of a car on that day. It is important that you do your homework prior to stepping into a dealership. Know what you want, know what the sales price is, and research all the features. Make some calls to dealerships or email them prior to going to make sure your desired vehicle is available at that location. Make sure you have a pre-approved auto loan before buying so you know what you can afford and have the confidence you’re getting the best deal possible.

7 RULES FOR A PAIN-FREE WINTER

Celco Community Credit Union Holiday Closing October 8… Columbus Day November 12… Veterans Day November 22 & 23 Thanksgiving December 24 1/2 Christmas Eve December 25 Christmas Day January 1 New Year’s Day January 21 Martin L King Day February 18 Presidents Day

What is in store for us this winter? Let’s reflect on last year. Out of 1,500 weather stations across the U.S., Climate Central reported that 84% had a winter that was hotter than normal. This included 47% that had a winter among their 10 warmest on record. So, why bother winterizing your home?

Over the past 10 years, residential electricity rates have risen about 20% on average nationally, according to the Energy Information Administration. By 2030, the U.S. demand for electricity is expected to grow by 25%.

Also, have you ever known a meteorologist who gets a forecast wrong? Even if the 2018–19 winter season is a warm one, there’s bound to be a swing or two in the weather pendulum. It’s always better to play it safe. After all, the best prediction is that weather is unpredictable. 1. CHANGE YOUR FURNACE FILTER – If you have a furnace, you should be changing your filter every 1 to 3 months. Take note that winter is the most demanding time for your furnace filter. 2. INSULATE PIPES AND SEAL LEAKS – The exposed pipes in your crawl space or attic are susceptible to freezing. An electric heat cable kit can be used on metal and plastic water pipes and keep water flowing down to -40 degrees Fahrenheit. 3. INSULATE DOORS AND WINDOWS – Cracks and openings around doors and windows can account for up to one-third of your home’s overall heating costs. Apply caulk around your doors and windows. 4. INSULATE THE ATTIC STAIRS – A major source for heat loss in most homes is the folding stairs to your attic. You can apply self-adhesive foam weather stripping around the perimeter and install an attic stairway insulator. You can even make one yourself using insulated foam board. 5. INSULATE POWER OUTLETS AND LIGHT SWITCHES – A point of cold air entry into your home can be found in your power outlets and light switches. You can install foam insulation pads right behind your switch plates and outlet covers to block the cold air out. 6. RUN FANS IN REVERSE – During the summer, counterclockwise rotation of your ceiling fans produces a cool breeze. Flip the switch to run the fan clockwise and you will circulate warm air back into your living space. Not only will you drive warm air down, you’ll drive down your heating costs. 7. TUNE UPYOUR HEATING EQUIPMENT – Your heating and air conditioning equipment should be inspected, cleaned and serviced twice a year. For the efficiency and life span of your equipment, hire a trained technician to lubricate motors, clean out debris, look for leaks, clean coils and fix other areas that could become a larger problem if left unchecked. Here are seven ways you can protect your home this winter. Regardless of whether the prognosticators are predicting unseasonable chills, heavy precipitation or even a mild winter, the cost of heating continues to rise, as does the overall demand for electricity.

Celco Community Credit Union

The Perfect Gift That Always Fits This holiday season, the people on your list can choose their own special gifts with a Visa gift card from Celco Community Credit Union! Rest assured that you are giving the gift that’s easy to spend, safer than cash and never the wrong size, color or style! Plus, they can be used practically everywhere – electronics stores, department stores, online – anywhere that accepts Visa debit cards. Visa gift cards are smart, thoughtful and always well received. Visit our office today to purchase yours! The new EMV cards contain a microchip that generates a new number every time you use the debit or credit card at a pay terminal, making skimming – stealing the card's information using an illegitimate card reader – almost impossible. While these chip cards reduce card fraud, new scams are proving they won't completely stop it. Consumers still need to keep their guard up to avoid being the victims of identity theft. Scam artists send bogus emails posing as your credit card company, claiming they need updated account information or asking you to click on a link to continue the process, according to the Federal Trade Commission. Performing either of those actions will expose you to risk, giving the scammers access to information they can use to hijack your identity or install malware on your computer that could provide them with your passwords and financial information. There's no reason your card issuer needs to contact you by email or to confirm

New Scams Circumvent Chip Cards

personal information before sending you a new chip card. To identify a fake email, look for these telltale signs: 1. A fishy email address. If it looks overly long or otherwise clearly not associated with your card issuer, then delete. 2. A generic salutation. Does the email begin with "Dear Customer" and appear to know very little about you? Most legitimate emails include the last four digits of your card number. 3. A suspicious link to your account. Never click on a link in an email – it's safer to go to your account login manually using a bookmark or typing the URL. If you have any questions about your card, call the 800-number on the back. While the new EMV cards are safer – they're not perfect. Even if you've already received your EMV cards, it's still important to check your account often, and report any unusual activity to your card issuer.
