As we mark the one year anniversary of the Horse River wildfire that destroyed some of our neighbourhoods, our residents are reacting in different ways. Some hosted gatherings to celebrate while others chose to leave town for a few days. Whichever way people chose to mark the anniversary, it remains one of the most painful chapters in Fort McMurray’s history. This has been a very human story and a tragedy. Lives were ripped apart and some have not yet recovered. The uncertainty was difficult for many and remains so for some.

We know not all of our residents have returned, and some never will.

While we see countless stories on how much this disaster has cost in terms of insurance claims, there is little mention of the human costs; what it’s done to our emotional and mental wellbeing; it broke people. The fact that more than 28,000 people have sought mental health care tells you just how much hurt there is. Then there are the financial circumstances as we grapple with insurance and trying to make ends meet. Some residents continue making mortgage payments while paying rent for a place to stay during the rebuild.
