2018 Section 6 - Laryngology, Voice Disorders, and Bronchoesophalogy

The median scores for women with chronic cough in the population were 5.5 (25th-75th percentile, 4.9-6.3) for the physical domain, 5.4 (25th-75th percentile, 4.4-6.1) for the psychologic domain, 6.3 (25th-75th percentile, 5.3-6.8) for the social domain, and 17.0 (25th-75th percentile, 15.1-18.9) in total. Corresponding values for men were 5.8 (25th-75th percentile, 5.3-6.3), 5.7 (25th-75th percentile, 4.7-6.3), 6.3 (25th-75th percentile, 5.5-6.8), and 17.7 (25th-75th percentile, 15.8-18.9), respectively. Compared with individuals without chronic cough, those with chronic cough had more often wheezing (40% vs 13%), dyspnea (54% vs 28%), sputum production (47% vs 6%), and chest pain or tightness (8% vs 2%), respectively ( Fig 4 ). When stratifying for smoking status, the results showed a similar pattern. Risk Factors for the Individual At the level of the individual, the age-adjusted ORs for the three top-ranked risk factors were 5.4 (95% CI, 2.5-12) for bronchiectasis, 2.5 (95% CI, 1.9-3.2) for asthma, and 2.0 (95% CI, 1.6-2.6) for occupational exposure to dust/fumes ( Table 2 ). Other risk factors signi fi cantly associated with chronic cough were air fl ow limitation, gastroesophageal re fl ux disease, upper airway cough syndrome, low income, smoking, low vegetable intake, abdominal obesity, and female sex; female sex

( Fig 1 ). Individuals with chronic cough were considerably older and had more often abdominal obesity, asthma, air fl ow limitation, bronchiectasis, gastroesophageal re fl ux disease, occupational exposure to dust/fumes, upper airway cough syndrome, low vegetable intake, and low income compared with individuals without chronic cough ( Table 1 ). 20 Additional sensitivity analyses can be found in e-Appendix 1 and e-Tables 1-4 . population were clinically affected (low score) in all domains of the Leicester Cough Questionnaire ( Fig 2 ), mostly psychologically and less so socially. The median scores for participants with chronic cough in the population were 5.8 (25th-75th percentile, 5.0-6.3) for the physical domain, 5.6 (25th-75th percentile, 4.6-6.3) for the psychologic domain, 6.3 (25th-75th percentile, 5.5-6.8) for the social domain, and 17.3 (25th- 75th percentile, 15.4-18.9) in total. As expected, the scores were lower for current smokers, and there were no differences between never smokers and former smokers except for men regarding the psychologic domain ( Figs 2, 3 ). Although women seemed to have lower scores than men, they only differed statistically regarding the physical domain overall ( Fig 3 ).
