THE SETTING

The University of San Di ego is an independent Catho li c institution of higher education. Founded in 1949, USO is located on 180 acres overlook– ing Mission Bay, San Diego Harbor and the Pac ific Ocean. The campus is named Alcala Park and is located just IO minutes from downtown San Di– ego and the world famous San Diego Zoo. Historic Old Town is just min– utes away as we ll. The city of San Diego along with this campus traces their orig in s to fifteenth centu ry Spain. The campus was named after a Spanish village near Madrid - Alca la de Henares. Founded by the Greeks as Complutum, the village was later renamed Al Kala (the Castle) by the Moslems. Christians recaptured the vill age cen tu ries later and fo unded a university, the Univer– sity of Alcala, whose buildings became the inspiration for US D's style. Both in sti tutions are located on a hill overlooking a river valley.

THE CAMPUS

The USO campu s is regarded as one of the most architecturally unique institutions in the cou ntry, featuring 18 major buildings designed in an ornamental 16th century Spanish Renaissance sty le. Since 1984, USO has completed 11 major construction and expansion projects. A five -story, Spanish Renaissance parking garage ( I, I00 spaces) was compl eted in 1998. A landscaped founta in plaza was finished in the fall of 1995 , connecting the entrances of the lmmaculata and Hughes Administration Center. In 1992, the university completed the 45 ,000 square foot Loma Hall. which includes an expanded bookstore, a larger mail cen– ter, c lassrooms and laboratories. In 1990, the renovated Katherine M. and George M. Pardee Jr. Legal Research Center opened, a facility that offers the latest in information technol– ogy. ACADEMICS

USO enro ll s more than 6,943 students who have a choice of more than 50 under– graduate and graduate degree programs. The university's academic units include the Col– lege of Arts and Scie nces, and the Schools of Business Administration, Education, Law and Nursing. C lass size genera ll y averages between 18-25 students with the student to teacher ratio being 18: I. Over 97 percent of USD's ful l-time facu lty hold doctorates. In the annual ratings of the country's co ll eges and uni versiti es, published by U.S. News & World Report, USO moved from the regional to nati ona l category in 1994. The university is ranked among the top I00 schoo ls in the nation. STUDENT LIFE Student activ iti es include cultural events, dances, boat cru ises, beach parties, BBQ's, concerts, comedy ni ghts, symposia and much more. Students participate in a wide range of volunteer projects such as adult literacy tutoring, senior citizen ou treach, and house bui lding in Tijuana. The intramural program is a lso an integral part of student life on campus with over two-thirds of the USO community partak ing in in tramu ra l sports. ATHLETICS

The Uni versity of San Diego is a member of the West Coast Confer– ence for nearly all sports and competes in 16 intercollegiate sports on the NCAA Di vision I level. Women's sports include: basketball , crew, cross country, soccer, softbal l, swi mming, tennis and voll eyball. Men's sports include: baseball, basketball , crew, cross country, go lf, football , soccer and tenni s. Since 1990 USO teams have won ten conference championships; made 30 NCAA post-season appearances; had 26 Conference Coaches of the Year; 2 1 Conference Players of the Year, 12 Conference Freshmen of the Year, fo ur WCC Scholar Athletes of the Year and 30 All-America selections.
