The Logic of Logos and Catchphrases The First Frosty Mug One hot day in June of 1919 in Lodi, California an entrepreneur named Roy Allen mixed up a batch of creamy root beer and sold the first frosty mug of this delightful beverage for one nickel. Now, more than seventy years later, A&W Root Beer® is the world's number one selling root beer and is still mixed fresh daily and sold at hundreds of A&W® restaurants. Allen purchased the formula for his root beer from a pharmacist in Arizona. To this day, the unique blend of herbs, pices, barks and berries remains a proprietary secret. With the success of his first root beer stand in Lodi, Allen soon opened a second stand in nearby Sacramento. It was there that what is thought to be the country's first "drive-in" featuring "tray-boys" for curb side service, opened up. In 1922 Allen took on a partner, Frank Wright, an employee from his original Lodi location. The two partners combined their initials “A" for Allen and "W" for Wright and formally named the beverage, A&W Root Beer®. Three units were opened in Sacramento, then on to other northern and central California locations and to the states of Texas and Utah. By 1933, the creamy beverage was such a success that there were over 170 franchised outlets operating in the mid-west and west. To insure uniform quality for the namesake beverage, Allen sold A&W Root Beer® concentrate exclusively to each franchise operator. DuringWorldWar II nonewrestaurantswere opened anddespite governmental sugar rationing and employee shortages most A&W® units remained successful. After the war, the number of A&W® restaurants tripled as GI loans paved the way for private enterprise to flourish. In 1950, with over 450 A&W® restaurants operating nationwide, founder Roy Allen retired and sold the business to an aggressive Nebraskan named Gene Hurtz, who formed the A&W Root Beer Company. The post war era - the rapidly recovering economy and popularity of the automobile provided the right environment for Hurtz's company to prosper. Drive-ins were becoming increasingly popular and A&W® had the privilege of being one of the few nationally established drive-in restaurant chains. By 1960 the number of A&W® restaurants had swelled to over 2000. Three years later, both A&W® and J. Hungerford Smith Company were purchased by United Fruit Company of Boston. In 1970, United Fruit was acquired by The AMK Corporation, who formed the new corporation, United Brands Company. Within this structure the A&WRoot Beer Company adopted a new trademark, changed its name to A&W International, Inc. and began the process of becoming a full-fledged restaurant and food service organization. America loved the taste of A&WRoot Beer®. So, in 1971, United Brands formed a wholly-owned subsidiary, A&W Beverages, Inc., for the purpose of making A&W Root Beer® available on the grocery shelf. First introduced in Arizona and California, the cans and bottles of A&WRoot Beer® were an instant success. Retailers nationwide were soon carrying the product. Who doesn’t like a frosty glass of root beer on a hot day!!!!!!! Logo history: 1919 - A plain glass mug was used without letters or words. The A&W name was not yet used 1921 - The letters 'A&W' appeared raised on the glass mug By Pam Teel

Did You Know…? By Pam Teel

Did you know if it wasn’t’ for three black women, mathematicians who worked for NASA, Astronaut John Glenn might never have been able to get back safely from his first mission of circling the earth? Their names were Katherine Johnson, Mary Jackson, and Dorothy Vaughn. They were a part of NASA’s human computers. Made up mostly of women, they calculated by hand the complex equations that allowed space heroes like Neil Armstrong, Alan Shepard, and John Glenn to travel safely to space and back. In 1935, the NACA, a precursor to NASA, hired five women to be their first computer pool at the Langley campus. In June 1941, with war raging in Europe, President Roosevelt looked to ensure the growth of the federal workforce. He issued an executive order which banned "discrimination in the employment of workers in defense in-

dustries or government because of race, creed, color, or national origin." The attack on Pearl Harbor brought the U.S. into a war and NACA and Langley began recruiting African-American women with college degrees to work as human computers. While they did the same work as their white counter- parts, African-American computers were paid less and relegated to the segregated west section of the Langley campus, where they had to use separate dining and bathroom facilities. They became known as the "West Computers." Despite having the same education, they had to retake college courses they had already passed and were often never considered for promotions or other jobs within NACA. Katherine Johnson was a child prodigy. She came fromWest Virginia where she graduated high school at 14 and went to historically black West Virginia State University. In 1938, as a graduate student, she became one of three students—and the only woman—to desegregate West Virginia's State College. In 1953, Johnson was hired by NACA (NASA). Johnson's first big NASA assignment was computing the trajectories for Alan Shepard's historic flight in 1961. Johnson and her team's job were to trace out in extreme detail Freedom 7's exact path from liftoff to splashdown. It was relatively simple in light of what would soon be coming. It was a huge success and NASA immediately set their sights on America's first orbital mission. Johnson's main job in the lead-up and during the mission was to double-check and reverse engineer the newly-installed IBM 7090s trajectory calcula- tions. As it shows, there were very tense moments during the flight that forced the mission to end earlier than expected. And John Glenn did request that Johnson specifically check and confirm trajectories and entry points that the IBM spat out. Glenn did not completely trust the computer. So, he asked the head engineers to "get the girl to check the numbers... If she says the numbers are good... I'm ready to go." Johnson would go on to work on the Apollo program, too, including performing trajectory calculations that assisted the 1969 moon landing. Her calculations were also essential to the beginning of the Space Shuttle program, and she worked on plans for a mission to Mars. She would retire from NASA in 1986. In 2015, Katherine Johnson received the Presidential Medal of Freedom. A NASA computational research facility in her hometown of Hampton, Virginia was named in her honor. She is still alive at 100 years old! Dorothy Vaughan and Mary Jackson worked on the Friendship Seven blast-off. Vaughan was one of NACA's early computer hires during World War II. She became a leader and advocate for the "West Computers." In 1948, she became NACA's first black supervisor and, later, an expert FORTRAN programmer. Despite these successes and her capability, she was constantly passed over for promotions herself. Vaughan struggled with the same things all female computers did while at NASA, not being able to be with her children and family very much but she was able to give them a comfortable life. She knew she was changing the world with her job. Dorothy Vaughan helmed West Computing for nearly a decade. In 1958, when the NACA made the transition to NASA, segregated facilities, including the West Computing office, were abolished. Dorothy Vaughan and many of the former West Comput- ers joined the new Analysis and Computation Division (ACD), a racially and gender-integrated group on the frontier of electronic computing. Dorothy Vaughan became an expert FORTRAN programmer, and she also contributed to the Scout Launch Vehicle Program. She passed away in 2008. Mary Jackson stood out during her time at NASA. After graduating with dual degrees in math and physical science, she was hired to work at Langley in 1951. After several years as a computer, Jackson took an assignment in assisting senior aeronautical research engineer Kazimierz Czarnecki and he encouraged her to become an engineer herself. To do that, however, she needed to take after-work graduate courses held at segregated Hampton High School. Jackson petitioned the City of Hampton to be able to learn next to her white peers. She won, completed the courses, and was promoted to engi- neer in 1958, making her NASA's first African-American female engineer—and, perhaps, the only one for much of her career. After 34 years at NASA, Jackson had earned the most senior engineering title available. She realized she could not earn further promotions without becoming a supervisor. She accepted a demotion to become a manager of both the Federal Women’s Program, in the NASA Office of Equal Opportunity Programs, and of the Affir- mative Action Program. In this role, she worked to influence both the hiring and promotion of women in NASA's science, engineering, and mathematics careers. She died in 2005.

Secret Agent Man By Pam Teel

Michael H. (can’t give you his name, might have to kill you, lol) worked for the Secret Service Agency for a few years. He had always wanted to work in law enforcement in some capacity. When he noticed an ad on Instagram, of all places, saying they were recruiting,; he thought it was fake, but sent a resume in anyway. When he actually heard back and received an invitation for an interview; he was floored. Soon one interview led to many others. After extensive testing, written examinations, polygraph tests, questions about his past, stress tests, home interviews to see how he lived, numerous checks of his stability and his background, personality checks with friends and neighbors, any criminal records he might have had, even things that might have happened in the past like fights at school, or other circumstances, he got the job. Lesson to be learned from Michael, what you do in your youth might affect whether you get in or not. Say if you get into a fight one night when you got drunk at a high school party or you’re on someone else’s website looking drunk and out of control and they learn of this, it could count against you. Even your credit scores and if you’re late on loan payments, could make a difference in whether you get hired or not. So try to make good decisions in your youth because one day they might come back to haunt you. A career with Secret Service offers one-of-a-kind training, a high level of responsibility and

a future as you continuously apply new skills, making a positive impact in one of the nation’s most important federal law enforcement areas. You’ll join an organization with more than 140 years of experience building highly skilled teams worthy of trust and confidence. The Secret Service employs approximately 3,200 special agents, 1,300 Uniformed Division officers, and more than 2,000 other specialized administrative, professional and technical support personnel. The secret service is not just men in suits and ties. There are different divisions you could work under. Special agent- The U.S. Secret Service recruits personnel of the highest caliber to carry out its integrated missions of investigation and protection. The job of special agent offers qualified men and women a challenging and fulfilling career. While the executive protection mission is known worldwide, the U.S. Secret Service’s investigative mission continues to grow due to developments in technology. Special agents investigate violations of laws relating to financial crimes such as credit card and access device fraud, as well as computer-based attacks on the nation’s banking and telecommunications. In the field of protection Secret Service special agents develop and implement innovative strategies to mitigate threats to our nation’s leaders. They are trained in investigations such as threats against the President and Vice President, and more. The Uniformed Division’s mission is to protect facilities and venues secured for U.S. Secret Service protectees. Today, the Uniformed Division has grown both in size and scope of responsibility and is mandated by law to provide physical security for the White House Complex, U.S. treasury, Eisenhower Executive office Building, and the Vice President’s residence at the Naval Observatory. It also provides security for the foreign diplomatic missions in Washington, D.C. This division is more protection based, like a traveling police force. They deal more with arrests techniques, civil rights, and physical security. They are trained to defend the President and V.P. on foreign and domestic soil. SO Special Officers-special officers perform a wide range of security functions and support assignments as part of the protective mission for the Secret Service. Assignments may include maintaining designated protective security posts; inspecting all operational, safety, emergency, and convenience equipment of protective vehicles to ensure peak operating condition; driving protective vehicle or follow-up; controlling the movement of persons into and around multiple Secret Service facilities and associated areas; monitoring and operating various communications equipment and employing various advanced x-ray screening technologies in order to detect and identify high-risk items. Special officers are authorized to make arrests in connection with their official duties. Administrative, Professional, and Technical Secret Service -APT employees play a critical role in ensuring the Service’s overall success. They are always looking for talented, diverse individuals from all segments of the American society to serve within the ranks of their administrative, professional and technical (APT) occupations. According to Michael, the Secret Service looks for a type of person that pretty much has a squeaky clean record. They want someone with stability who can handle different circumstances. You are there to do a job, know your place with high-ranking officials, not to idolize those you protect. They like someone who is highly organized, can control their temper, and can be respectful to diplomats of other countries. Though it’s not impossible to get a job, be prepared to have your whole life picked apart. You need to be that type of person who won’t crack under pressure, will not be afraid to step in to protect our leaders, no matter the consequences, and most importantly can handle being away from your family for long periods of time. They look for people with different backgrounds such as degrees in Engineering, criminal justice, secretarial skills, etc, depending on what you are applying for. It requires you to live within a twenty-mile radius of your assignment. Yes, you might travel to foreign countries and see a bit of the world, but there is not a lot of down time in between. It’s like you are always on duty. You really need to make a commitment because the job can take a toll on a young family as it did with Michael. He was happy that he was able to serve his country in many different ways but once he had a child, he was torn in two different directions and he decided to resign. His suggestion to you, make sure you are ready to devote most of your time to your job. Think about the risks of being away from your family at long lengths of time before you apply. Circumstances can change, as they did for him. Keep focused on your goal, you can do it, but remember what you do in your youth can make a difference in whether you get hired or not. If this is your dream, you can apply online at: https://www.secretservice.gov/join/careers/

Q: LEADERS IN LEAST INVASIVE PAIN & SPINE PROCEDURES I often feel that I would rather live with back pain than have “SURGERY”. Q: What is an Endoscopic Discectomy?

A:

The word endoscopy refers to a physician’s use of an endoscope, a small, flexible tube with a light to look inside of your body. It is the least invasive way to treat disc problems and takes about an hour. Ultimately, the patient is left with a ¼ inch scar but a lifetime of pain relief. Recent studies have proven that endoscopic spine procedures are a safe and effective way to treat various spinal conditions such as disc herniations, spinal stenosis, failed back surgery syndrome, as well as other neck and back conditions. If your neck or back pain is preventing you from participating in your daily activities, we encourage you to consider an endoscopic procedure as a possible option.

The decision of whether or not to have spine surgery can be very stressful. Today, due to advances in endoscopic spine, there are excellent alternatives to traditional, open back surgery. Patients come to the Spine Institute of NorthAmerica to discuss their options. They are often happy to learn that we can relieve their pain with minimal risk and with excellent outcomes. We use state-of- the-art, endoscopic techniques that are much less invasive than traditional open back surgery. Most of our patients walk out the same day and are back to work the next. Why should I consider having an endoscopic “PROCEDURE” instead?

Funeral Consumer Alliance By, Lauren Kolacki

Losing a loved one hurts. In fact, it is one of the hardest challenges we will ever face. We are over- whelmed with questions and concerns from outsiders all whilst attempting to process our own flood of emotions. We battle with organizing our thoughts, never mind organizing a funeral. That concept alone often results in families making their way over to the nearest funeral home and spending more money than they needed to. Laurie Powsner, a board member of the Funeral Consumer Alliance, has spoken up on the impor- tance of this non-profit 501(c)(3) organization. Powsner worked as a hospice social worker for eigh- teen years and now works with people in their last years of life. Being subjected to a notable amount

of death, she has become exceptionally educated on the topic, which originally encouraged her to get involved with the Funeral Consumer Alliance. The Funeral Consumer Alliance’s mission is to ensure consumers are fully prepared and protected when planning a funeral for themselves or their loved ones. Powsner claims, you wouldn’t just walk to your closest car dealership and without doing any research and purchase the first car you see, but that’s how most people make funeral arrangements. This topic isn't one often talked about, however, it should be. Volunteers of Funeral Consumer Alliance speak at senior centers, retirement communities, clubs, religious groups and they send out a newsletter every spring. They are also available to answer your questions via email or phone. It is imperative that the mission behind this organization is made known. The situation is never ideal; however, Laurie Powsner still recommends shopping around, as funeral homes are required to give you prices. Don’t be afraid to ask questions and find what is best for you. Powsner claims many of her patients or patients’ families have made their own funeral arrangements, which make it easier for their families. To acquire additional information on this subject log on to funeralnj.org. In addition to further educating yourself on planning a funeral, there is an opportunity to donate and/or join the Funeral Consumer Alliance. “Losing a loved one is hard. Planning a funeral shouldn't be.”

American Heart Month By YMCA of Western Monmouth County

February is American Heart Month, and as a leading community-based organization committed to improving the nation’s health, the Old Bridge Y urges everyone in the community to get a blood pressure screening. High blood pressure is often referred to as “The Silent Killer” because there are typically no warning signs or symptoms. Killing about one-in-four women, heart disease is the leading cause of death in the United States for men and women. High blood pressure, high LDL cholesterol, and smoking are key risk factors for heart disease. About half of Americans (49%) have at least one of these three risk factors. Several other medical conditions and lifestyle choices can also put people at a higher risk for heart disease, including diabetes, overweight and obesity, poor diet, physical inactivity and excessive alcohol use. While high blood pressure and heart disease are serious conditions, the good news is that a healthy heart is an achievable goal through lifestyle changes. The Y offers the following tips to help families be heart healthy. 1. Get Physical: Being physically active every day is fun and can improve the function of your heart. 2. Take a Snooze: Lack of sleep can be associated with elevated cholesterol and blood pressure. Adults need at least seven, but no more than nine hours of sleep at night to aid with the prevention of heart disease. Children need 10-12 hours of sleep per night. 3. Shape Up Those Recipes: Makeover your family’s favorite recipes by reducing the amount of salt and saturated fat and substituting a lower fat food without sacrificing tastes.

4. Feeling the Pressure: Revised blood pressure guidelines from American Heart Association mean that nearly half of all Americans (46 percent) have high blood pressure. Lowering or maintaining normal blood pressure can greatly reduce your risk for heart disease and stroke. Start self-monitoring your blood pressure and know the numbers. Discuss the results with you doctor if needed. Wear red and visit the Freehold Y at 470 East Freehold Road on Friday, February 1, for a Go Red Weigh Hard Workout at 10:30am. For more information about how the Freehold Y can help keep you heart healthy, visit www.ymcanj.org.

Outfit your livi g room with a sectional, acc nt chair and plenty of surface space. Bedroom furniture should exude a sense of comfort and calm with the right mattress and headboard. The Latest in Home Theater Systems By Darren Weger

The home theater market continues to grow as more smart home products become available and affordable for today’s consumers. With the new year approaching swiftly, let’s take a look at the trends in home sound and theater that will keep thriving straight through 2018 and beyond. Top Smart Home Products Home Automation: There are many smart home products available today, but you can’t experience the true magic until they all work together seamlessly. Whether it’s a handheld remote for your videos, a touch-screen to browse and play music, or a keypad to manage lights, shades, and audio, products like Control4 home automation offer many interfaces and voice prompts that allow you to interact with your home however you prefer. Wireless Home Sound : A rise in technological advancements has transformed how we experience music and movies—especially in the realm of wireless audio. Consumers are choosing to alleviate strain caused by buffering, missed beats, and freezing, with sleek and powerful wireless access points are placed around the home.

Online Streaming: More than 49 million Wi-Fi-connected homes in the U.S. are driving the binge-watching craze, making streaming content a crucial component of the latest home theater systems. Share your entire movie library, streaming video and satellite channels in every room—with no need for set-top boxes and multiple video sources. Voice Control Integration: Voice control will continue to be embraced, with 50 percent of all searches expected to be conducted via voice by 2020. Advancements in home sound and voice will play an integral role in the adoption of even more smart home products. WearableTheater&VirtualReality: As products likeControl4home automation make things easier in the real world, virtual reality (VR) and wearable technology are finding their way into our homes. Manufacturers will continue developing and refining smart and networked home-theater speakers that support VR. Make Your Home Sound and Perform Better If you dream of having more smart home products, make it a reality. Many of the latest home theater systems can be had on any budget.
