Everyone loves warmth

When my mother-in-law Anneli Wahlsten set up Ruskovilla with her husband Mauno Mattsson 38 years ago, their aim was to make clothing without exploiting the land, people or animals. These values have guided Ruskovilla’s operations and decisions since the very beginning. This year marks a quarter of a century - 25 years - that I have worked for the Ruskovilla company. This year we also reached one of our long-standing goals: all of our rawma- terials - including silk wool - are now organic. A large part of the eco-friendliness of clothing lies in its manufacturing method and in sustainable quality. All of our production is carried out by experienced textile industry professionals. We are grateful that our personnel are com- mitted to us and our shared values. Rather than use robots, our very own professionals will continue to manufacture our products at the old Artjärvi dairy, to guarantee our high level of product quality. Our product catalogue for this year has taken inspiration from Finland and Finnish nature. We have pictured our Key Flag products set against autumn colours and blooming summer meadows. We also wanted to explain more about the effect of organic materials on skin’s wellbeing when worn against bare skin. Natural warmth is the best thing we can offer to ourselves and our loved ones. Hopefully you’ll find some favourites in our range. Our dreams came true - all our rawmaterials are now organic

Organic wool fleece has become a firm family favourite We’re fighting the global plastic problem on all fronts. People who love spending time outdoors have long wanted an eco-friendlier alternative to microfibre fleece which we offer in the form of fleece products made from organic wool. We make jackets and outdoor clothing from the grey wool fleece, which is suitable for use as a middle or outer layer. The jackets have a full vertical zip and are great for everyday use. The lightly brushed surface feels pleasant against bare skin, and doesn’t release any microplastics - which are harmful to people and the environment - when washed. A separate range of wool fleece for children can be found on pages 26-27, and fleece clothing for babies is on pages 40-41.

The wool is warm due to the pockets of air in its structure, and doesn’t feel cold even when wet. A merino wool layer is an everyday lifesaver Wool is a low-maintenance, wash-and- wear, soft natural fibre, that is well-suited for use against bare skin. Wool consists of the same components as human skin, and therefore feels pleasant. Rough types of wool are not suitable for use as undergar- ments, but merino wool has a smooth structure, which makes it a popular choice even among people who would otherwise avoid wool. A flexible, warm and odour-neutralising layer of merino wool is a trusted under- garment layer for many police officers, firefighters and forest workers. The layer’s breathability makes it suitable for a wide range of activities and temperatures.

Shirts and mittens made from eco-friendly wool fleece and matching trousers made from merino wool The middle layer for children consists of two parts: The children’s fleece jacket has pockets and a full vertical zip, which makes it easy to put on and take off. The trousers, which are the same colour as the jacket, are made from organic merino wool knit. The jackets and trousers come in neutral colours, which means that they can be mixed and matched with other clothing and used as a middle layer in winter and outerwear at other times of the year. Organic silk is a lifesaver for sensitive skin

Our organic silk comes from one of the few organic silk farms in the world. Silk is especially popular among people with sensitive skin be- cause it is hypoallergenic and has a smooth structure. The very first people to use silk – ancient Chinese emperors – noticed the calming and soothing effect of luxurious silk. We make silk shirts with and with- out sleeves. The silk bonnet does not itch or cause you to sweat. The layer is used in many families as nightwear due to its calming effect on the skin.

Newborns are unprotected in many ways: the thickness of their skin is just one-fifth of the thickness of an adult’s skin. We also know that sweat glands work in both directions: they absorb substances that are in contact with the skin. As such, it truly matters what we place against our babies’ and children’s skin. Even adults can sense this through what they smell and breathe in: the bleaching, dyeing and finishing chemicals in clothes stores are not good for us. Many parents are concerned about the chemicals in plastic toys, and the same concern should also be shown for clothing and other textiles. We have served customers with sensitive skin for four decades Our experience means that we can be certain that both the cotton and silk we use are well-tolerated among people with allergies and atopic conditions. In addition, our merino wool is the smoothest kind of wool, and is therefore also suitable for people who otherwise find wool to be itchy. Protection for babies’ and children’s sensitive skin Adjustable waist elastic is sewn in to the garment to reduce irritation. We aim to make our size and logo labels as soft as possible, but they can also be removed if necessary. It is especially important to choose detergents that are as gentle and fragrance-free as possible to reduce skin irritation from clothing. We spend around one-third of our lives asleep, and that’s why the material we choose to sleep with is important. Our bedclothes include organic wool and organic linen. They adapt to the sleepers temperature better than artificial fibres, feeling pleasant all year round. Stress, poor ergonomics at work and an ever-more digital everyday can cause neck stiffness and teeth grinding. Natural fibres - the most natural thing in the world

100 % organic wool

Merino wool is the softest type of wool and is up to seven times thinner than Finnsheep wool. That’s why it feels pleasant even against bare skin. The wool we use is suitable for almost anyone to use, as it does not contain any ingredients that cause or exacerbate allergies. A wool knit flexes along with the wearer’s movement, and it is breathable, so it won’t make you sweat in warm weather. Wool is nature’s own smart fibre, a product developed by sheep living in a wide range of conditions, and which adapts to the wear- er’s body. Curly wool fibre binds air to itself, balancing out differ- ences in temperature. It can absorb up to 40% of its own weight in moisture without feeling wet. In addition, it neutralises skin secre- tions, such as sweat. All of the GOTS-certified merino wool we use comes from South America, where the mulesing procedure, which is painful for the sheep, is not required.

100 % organic silk

Silk spun by the domestic silkmoth (Bombyx Mori) from the leaves of the mulberry tree is an ancient and valuable natural material. Its composition is very similar to that of human skin, and its therapeutic properties have helped people with allergies and arthritis. Silk is a good insulator, which means that it keeps you warm in cool weather, and cool in warm weather. Like wool, silk is breath- able, and it absorbs moisture without feeling wet. Its smooth surface structure means that it is suitable even for those with very sensitive skin. In recent decades, the mass production of silk has become more common and impoverished the soil and weakened the quality of larvae. The GOTS-certified silk that we use comes from a farm in central China, which uses production
