Welcome The Elite Traveler team is split. Some of us value comfort and luxury above all else when traveling, others prefer new and exciting adventures. The good news is that it is now easy to enjoy both at the same time. In this issue we explore African deserts, mountain retreats and remote tropical islands. And in very few cases will visitors have to experience anything other than total comfort. For years a visit to the Galápagos Islands has required travelers to go back to basics at best, but as Lauren Holmes discovered (page 86), this is no longer the case. This trend for luxury wilderness retreats stretches from one end of the Americas to the other (see our Top 10 American adventures on page 60). And it’s the same in Africa, where a fascinating visit to the huge archeological site at Lake Turkana in Kenya – home to many of modern man’s earliest ancestors – is surprisingly well accommodated. In the next issue, the focus will be on food, as we reveal the Elite Traveler Top 100 Restaurants 2016. This list has become a benchmark for restaurateurs and chefs around the world, because it is voted for by customers rather than critics. For the results and the latest on the list, go to elitetraveler.com

We believe that every great place has a soul. A uniqueness that defines it, draws us to it and awakens our sense of adventure, and that once discovered, pulls us back to share with the people who are most important to us. This belief is the foundation of what, where, and the kind of communities and homes we create. It also means we are naturally invested in the locations we develop, and take care to ensure that we always have a positive impact on the community. We approach every home we build with integrity, relying on local knowledge to integrate it into the fabric of the culture and landscape that surrounds it.

Object of desire

Savelli Genève smartphone We are aware that our headline – the fact we are calling this extraordinary feat of design a simple “smartphone” – is an understatement. The headline should, in fact, be: “Uber-bling smartphone”. Or, more frankly: “An insane composition of 18K white gold, 900 diamonds and 75 baguette-cut emeralds, made in Switzerland that just happen to come together to form a smartphone”. The kicker is the unscratchable screen made of sapphire. Designed by Savelli Genève in collaboration with Gemfields, the phone combines technology, elegance and downright decadence. Just don’t drop it/leave it on the jet/feed it to the fish/or do whatever terrible thing you did to wreck your last smartphone. Emerald Insane, $149,705, selfridges.com

LITTLE BLACK BOOK: Washington, DC

Elite pick Private members’ clubs are 10-a-penny these days, particularly in London. But we’re still a sucker for the grand old ones, which is why we were excited to learn that The Arts Club, the Georgian townhouse in the heart of Mayfair established in 1863 by Charles Dickens, has had an elegant makeover. Sixteen new suites fit for a king have been added (did we mention that HRH Prince Phillip is the patron of the club?) Our check-in of choice is the glorious 1,162 sq ft Penthouse Suite, with a private roof terrace, dining for up to 12 and a 24-hour butler. Rich wood surfaces and fresh, pastel tones combine for a strikingly modern look. We also love the Art Deco bathroom, with polishedmarble surfaces and antique bronze doors. From $5,995 per night theartsclub.co.uk

Jaeger-LeCoultre’s Atelier Reverso Classic Duetto, Reverso Tribute Gyrotourbillon, $270,000

Watches WATCH EVOLUTION Making any changes to a timepiece as iconic as Jaeger-LeCoultre’s Reverso, which debuted in 1931, is always a slightly dangerous proposition. How do you change something so beloved by collectors and watch connoisseurs while keeping them on your side?

The meticulous craftsmanship that goes into the design and making of the Jaeger-LeCoultre

Reverso Tribute Gyrotourbillon

And it wouldn’t be an anniversary (or the Salon International de la Haute Horlogerie Genève watch show), without a Grande Complication. This year’s highlight is the Reverso Tribute Gyrotourbillon, part of the Hybris Mechanica line. Made in platinum and limited to 75 pieces, the Gyrotourbillon is smaller thanks to a new in-house movement. The front face is hypnotic as the biaxial flying tourbillon rotates and the back dial’s openworked movement shows off the craftsmanship

For its 85th anniversary, Jaeger- LeCoultre decided to preserve key aspects of the Reverso, including the all-important Golden Ratio proportions, Dauphine watch hands and dual faces, while acknowledging the demands of clients. Several Classic models are now automatic, reflecting the aversion of some to watch winding, but Jaeger-LeCoultre lets creativity run wild in the Atelier Reverso. Clients can personalize every part of the back dial: strap, color, hour markers and gems. There’s even a special design by Christian Louboutin.

BRAND PROFILE LAURENT FERRIER

After a successful 37-year career at Patek Philippe, Laurent Ferrier retired, but thankfully for the watch world, not for long. In 2010, he presented his first eponymous watch and the industry immediately recognized Ferrier with the prestigious Grand Prix d’Horlogerie de Genève in his first year. Every component is designed in-house, each watch is assembled from start to finish by one watchmaker. It is not surprising that only 120 watches are made each year. laurentferrier.ch

1 Galet Traveller Globe Night Blue

This exceptional dial uses the traditional champlevé technique to carve out the oceans from the 18K white gold dial, before hand painting with enamel and finishing with dots of gold leaf to depict the earth’s lights as they appear when seen from space. $87,000 The original Galet Classic won the Grand Prix in 2010, and for 2016, Ferrier updates with a new cushion-cut case. The dial is white Grand Feu enamel with hand-painted Roman numerals and its clear back shows off the hand-finished movement and tourbillon. $208,000 3 Galet Secret At first glance, the dial appears to be a black fan. Only between certain times, or by pressing a button on the crown, is the hidden second dial revealed. Experts can paint a custom scene or set diamonds behind the fan. From $320,000 2 Galet Classic Square Tourbillon Double Balance Spring

Mechanical and complicated women’s watches were a focus for many brands at January’s Salon International de la Haute Horlogerie Genève. Roger Dubuis declared 2016 to be the “Year of the Diva”, Piaget introduced its first ladies’ complication, Cartier showed jeweled panther novelties and Van Cleef & Arpels released beautiful Poetic Complications. Of course there were diamonds, but the watchmakers here were talking more about the movements than the sparkle. Roger Dubuis unveiled 10 different mechanical Velvet watches, each attaining the prestigious Poinçon de Genève. Mother of pearl, Grand Feu enamel, even a carbon dial set with Paraíba tourmalines were shown, along with a bi-retrograde jumping date watch, limited to eight pieces. A collaboration with Parisian shoemaker Massaro produced a distinctive leather strap on a limited offering of 88 pieces. Piaget introduced the Limelight StellaMoon Phase, powered by a 135-tooth wheel that will keep the complication accurate for 122 years. Available with or without diamonds, Piaget gives women who care about watches a perfect piece for daytime. rogerdubuis.com; piaget.com AWoman’s Worth

Men’s style

In full bloom To quote The Devil Wears Prada : “Florals? For Spring? Groundbreaking.” In womenswear, perhaps not, but it is for menswear . While designers such as Gucci and Dolce & Gabbana went all out showing full floral suits, others limited the florals to one item. Marc Jacobs’ menswear designer Karl Aberg included chinoiserie flowers on a kimono-style evening jacket. At Dior Homme, creative director Kris Van Assche showed camouflage and floral prints. Sleeveless bombers styled to look like varsity jackets closed the show. Roses also appeared at Hermès, where menswear creative director Véronique Nichanian showcased basics in the most luxurious fabrics, such as a water snake hooded sweatshirt and a printed goatskin tee. The Hermès blazer pictured is even reversible to white flowers on a navy background.

Chest for the best Swiss brand Imperiali Genève has unveiled a work of art and elegance that combines a cigar chest (complete with gold-leaf wrapped cigars) with a laser cigar cutter, lighter and a tourbillon. The Emperador Cigar Chest sells for just over $1m, and is created in a limited edition of just 12 pieces annually. It holds 24 Grand Cru cigars in individual glass tubes and houses the lighter, cutter and high tech ashtray. More than 18,000 hours of work over the course of two years were required to bring the chest, and its crowning glory, the tourbillon, to fruition. The tourbillon watch, made of 323 parts and featuring a black lacquered Clous de Paris guilloché dial, sits within the top of the chest. It is a one-minute flying tourbillon, with 80 hours of power reserve. Created entirely by hand by Fabrice Thüler of Swiss Finest SA, the caliber is equipped with its own winding system that keeps the watch constantly wound. The idea of the Emperador Cigar Chest was conceived almost three years ago by friends David Pasciuto and Stéphane Nazzal when they were discussing with a cigar lover the concept of creating the ultimate cigar. Somehow the concept escalated to the ultimate cigar and cigar chest. imperiali-geneve.com

We may just be breaking into spring, but one of the key trends for this season requires a certain amount of skin to be on show. It’s time to take things off the shoulder.

The editors and buyers in off-the-shoulder tops, flocking to the first shows of the season, revealed the most visible trend. Young Brazilian designer Barbara Casasola shows that just a sliver of skin can be more sensual than a barely-there dress. Unexpected cutouts and sheer fabrics walked the runway at her London show. The long sleeved, bodycon off-the-shoulder dress (right) is our date night choice. Who knew collarbones, décolletage and ankles could be über sexy. Givenchy’s Riccardo Tisci presented a moving show and tribute in the shadow of One World Trade Center. Tisci showed a completely black and white collection that featured many of his signature designs. Lace is always quite a prominent theme for Tisci, including the dress below, styled with visible bra straps. barbaracasasola.com givenchy.com

The perfect pair

Match your sunglasses to your jewelry? When both are Boucheron, there’s no reason not to. The spring sunglasses collection comprises three styles inspired by the Quatre jewelry collection. True to its name, the Quatre ring has four types of gold (yellow, white, pink and brown) and four different Boucheron motifs (Double Gadroon, Diamonds, Clou de Paris and Grosgrain). The oversized square sunglasses are gold plated and feature the classic Quatre ring motifs on the side and on the end tips, set with sparkling crystals. As sunglasses are so easily misplaced, we think it’s smart to keep the diamonds in the jewelry. boucheron.com

Lingerie dressing can be tricky to pull off, but at Céline, Phoebe Philo presented a series of perfectly grown-up lace-trimmed slip dresses. Whether worn under a nipped waist jacket or alone, we recommend following Philo’s styling and wearing a flat boot to toughen up the look. Inspired by Peter Weir’s film Picnic at Hanging Rock , transformed Victorian garments were paraded at Raf Simon’s final show as creative director of Christian Dior’s women’s collections. Graff Diamonds spent months perfectly matching the sapphire beads

Each cushion-cut tanzanite in these Chopard Temptations earrings weighs in at 12 carats

Jennifer Lopez wore this Harry Winston Caftan Diamond Tassel necklace to the Golden Globes back in January

Hypnotic jewels A tassel adds an elegant and playful touch of whimsy to statement pieces of jewelry. The gentle, swinging movement is eye-catching, almost hypnotic, especially when realized in stunning jewels. The intertwining strands of Harry Winston’s Caftan cascading drop diamond necklace have 68.40 carats of marquis- and emerald-cut diamonds that end with two round-cut tassels, all set in platinum. Chopard’s high jewelry collection, Temptations, has Byzantine shapes with brightly colored precious stones, offset with diamonds. The earrings, pictured, feature 24 carats of cushion-cut tanzanites, 62.51 carats of sapphire beads and 17.43 carats of amethyst drops. Transformational pieces are the backbone of a woman’s jewelry wardrobe. Boucheron’s Reflet Pompon watch has a tassel that can be removed and worn as a pendant on the included chain. The white gold watch is set with round- and baguette-cut diamonds. Graff Diamonds’ sapphire and diamond beaded tassel secret watch has over 300 carats of sapphires and 40 carats of diamonds. Five rows of draped sapphire beads and diamonds connect two brooches. This versatile piece can be worn three ways; as a watch, individual brooches, or a single brooch with tassel.

Sharp shapes The accessory world is embracing technology and sharp, architectural shapes. The notion that women only want romantic jewelry is far behind us and designers are offering a range of strong yet pretty – not punky – pieces. While the original Bulgari B.zero1 collection was inspired by the curves of Rome’s Colosseum, the new bangle joining the collection this season has been waiting on the shelves for 16 years. Originally presented as a concept ring to launch the collection, it didn’t make it to production. But the Bulgari brothers loved it so much that they never forgot about it and are now introducing it. The team behind newly launched Tejen is fascinated with ancient architecture and takes a luxury approach to sustainability. Proving that ecofriendly pieces can also be edgy, the sharp forms with inverted diamonds are on every cool girl’s shopping list. With David Bowie’s recent untimely passing, references to his iconic style abound throughout fashion. A MAN’S HOME IS HIS CASTLE

A handful of houses in the world have iconic status – places such as the Palace of Versailles (home to the French royal family until revolution cut short their reign), Buckingham Palace (the London home of Queen Elizabeth ll) and even Hearst Castle (media magnateWilliam Randolph Hearst’s pad in San Simeon, California). Flying the flag on the French Riviera is the palatial Château de la Croix des Gardes that, in true “keeping up with the Joneses” fashion, was built purely to outdo its neighbors – the almost as magnificent Villa Ephrussi de Rothschild, Château Vallombrosa and Villa Romée, located in what is known as Quartier des Anglais. Fittingly for an iconic building, it has been the star setting of several iconic movies (notably Alfred Hitchcock’s To Catch a Thief , pictured above, starring Cary Grant and Grace Kelly); the venue of iconic parties (a fabulous masked ball was held here to mark the first Cannes International Film Festival in 1946); and its distinguished former owners include a Burmese jewel magnate, the owner of Perrier, as well as its first owner the Swiss industrialist Paul Girod, who had it built in 1919. Naturally, the roll call of attributes is impressive – it spans 12,916 sq ft, has 13 bedrooms, is surrounded by 24 acres of gardens, comes with a guesthouse and staff accommodation and enjoys sublime views over the Bay of Cannes. $50m–$100m, sothebysrealty.com

THE MAKING OF A HYPERCAR

The most hyped of hypercars will be unveiled in Geneva this month. The Bugatti Chiron is here at last as the replacement for the Veyron, currently the fastest production car in the world. With Bugatti owned by VW, the company responsible for the emissions scandal, there were concerns it might be shelved. Bugatti was also a pet project of former VW chairman Ferdinand Piëch, and it is

good news for fans of absurdly fast cars that it survived both Piëch’s departure and the fall out from “emissions-gate”. In Greek mythology, Chiron was the best of the centaurs (half men, half horses), notable for an ability to bring youth. Sadly, Bugatti’s Chiron offers no such life extending properties, and is instead named after French racing driver Louis Chiron (pictured above, inset). Chiron’s exploits for

Bugatti lit up the 1920s and 1930s, although his career extended well into the 1950s, lasting a somehow now unthinkable 35 years. Apparently, 100 orders have already been taken for the Chiron, despite it not being launched. So what is all the fuss about? All is due to be revealed at the Geneva International Motor Show this month. bugatti.com

The DeLorean DMC-12, made famous by the Back to the Future movies

AFORCETO BE RECKONEDWITH

Leather, suede and champagne are great, if rarely combined in a supercar’s interior. But there is something recklessly defiant about the new VLF Force 1, unveiled at the Detroit Motor Show in January to rave reviews and a legal challenge. Founded and run by entrepreneur Gilbert Villarreal, former GM executive Bob Lutz and designer Henrik Fisker (hence VLF), it was Fisker’s history as head of design at Aston Martin that caused the legal problems – he filed a $100m lawsuit against the British brand after they asked for the car not to be unveiled, as they thought it too similar to the DB10. The Force 1 is VLF’s second car and is a tweaked Dodge Viper. The 8.4-liter, V10 engine delivers 745bhp, accelerates from 0-60mph in three seconds and has a top speed of 218mph. A focus on comfort, detail (a two bottle champagne holder) and performance means extra weight, offset by a body built from carbon fiber. From $268,000, vlfautomotive.com

THE POWER OF THREE The rest of the best recent releases

PAST: RETURN OF AN ICON On October 21 last year we passed Back to the Future day amid much talk of hoverboards. But the real star of the movies was always the car, the DeLorean DMC-12, mourned by many after the company’s demise in 1983. Now, the Texas based firm that purchased the components from the collapsed company has been given permission to turn the components, together with some new underpinnings, into 300 new/old cars, priced at around $100,000 each. delorean.com PRESENT: LEXUS LC 500 It’s been a while, but here is a mainstream Lexus that car people are getting excited about. Taking some of the best bits from its LF-A supercar, this is a new sports coupé that delivers on looks, performance and comfort. The LC 500 strikes a great balance between being fun to drive and practical. It claims to be a four seater, although that low roofline means the two people in the back had better be small. But it is a high performance car, with a meaty five-liter V8 engine producing 467bhp, which gets the car from 0-60mph in just over four seconds. lexus.com FUTURE: AN INTERESTING CONCEPT Among the gadgets capturing imaginations at this year’s Consumer Electronics Show was the Faraday Future FFZERO1. Anyone with a passing knowledge of science won’t be surprised that a concept from a company called Faraday is electric, but this new racer busts the myth that electric cars are ugly. It looks like the Batmobile and, with four motors generating over 1,000bhp, can shift like one. The 0-60mph time is under three seconds, with a top speed of over 200mph. faradayfuture.com
