Family Handbook 2019-20

Year End Honours and Distinction S tudents in Grades 9-12 achieving Honours and Distinction accolades will be mailed a certificate and pin to their home address by the end of August. Students will also have their names published in the fall edition of the Torch . Honours and Distinction status is determined according to the terms of reference noted below. Grades 9 & 10 ● Honours is achieved when a student earns an average mark of 80-89.4% in her best six courses . ● Distinction is achieved when a student earns an average mark of at least 90% in her best six courses . Grades 11 & 12 ● Honours is achieved when a student earns an average mark of 80-89.4% in her best five courses . ● Distinction is achieved when a student earns an average mark of at least 90% in her best five courses . Grades 7 & 8 S tudents in Grades 7 and 8 are not eligible for Honours and Distinction Roll accolades. The purpose of Middle School is for students to focus on asking questions, developing executive functioning skills and being curious in class. We do not want them preoccupied with achieving Honours and Distinction accolades at a time in their cognitive and social development when Grade 7s and 8s should feel safe to take academic risks and make mistakes. As well, some Middle School students worry that not achieving Honours or Distinction accolades would adversely affect their university admission prospects. This is a completely unwarranted concern. Our graduates get accepted to highly selective postsecondary institutions and programs in Canada and abroad, and not one of them asks our Grade 12 applicants if they achieved Honour or Distinction status in Middle School.
