Abbey girls take to the stage for Community Arts Week
Continuing our 130th anniversary celebrations, this term saw the School hold its Community Arts Week – a whole week dedicated to music, art, drama and dance and a wonderful example of the range of talents possessed by our entire Abbey community. Kicking off the week, we were delighted to welcome members from Filament Theatre Company to lead our annual ‘Play in a Day’ event. Girls from Upper II to Lower IV came together to create a totally original piece of theatre which was then performed to parents at the end of the day. Next on the agenda were our biennial Evenings of Gymnastics and Dance, this year themed around ‘A Moment in Time’. With more than 120 girls involved, the show superbly highlighted the coming together of girls of all ages and from varied dance backgrounds. Performances ranged from a ballet number paying tribute to 9/11 victims to a high-flying trampette routine, and culminated in a whole cast number to create ‘A Moment in Time’ that won’t be forgotten. On a completely different stage at Reading’s South Street Arts Centre, budding thespians from the Senior School put on a stunning performance of C.S. Lewis’s Narnian classic ‘The Voyage of the Dawn Treader’. For three consecutive nights, audiences were held captive by innovative staging, visually striking props and convincing performances as they joined the cast on their quest to the utter East.
Other events throughout the week included a fabulous staff art exhibition at the newly-opened Turret House Gallery and a wonderful performance by our Junior School Chamber Choir at the Barnardo’s National Choral Competition, making the week a truly community-wide venture.
