Community Service Community service is an integral part of being a Girl Scout, providing girls with an opportunity to practice teamwork, build critical-thinking skills and empower them to make changes in their community. Sharing their time and resources helps girls increase their self-esteem and civic responsibility. Through participating in programs like April Showers, Journey Take Action projects or by earning a Girl Scout Bronze, Silver or Gold Award, girls are making a difference each day.

April Showers April Showers is Girl Scouts of Eastern Missouri’s largest community service program and happens annually over two weekends each April. Girl Scouts, volunteers, families and friends help people in need by collecting personal care items. This extraordinary program was launched in 1998. More than 1.6 million personal care items were collected in 2018 alone. The Juliette Coordinator can connect you with the April Showers contact in your area. Volunteers are needed to help with bag distribution, bag pick up, Showering the Community collections and at area collection sites.

Highest Awards

Bronze. Silver. Gold. These represent the highest honors a Girl Scout can earn.

All three awards give girls the opportunity to do big things while supporting an issue they care about. A Girl Scout might plant a community garden at her school or inspire others to eat healthy foods for her Bronze Award, advocate for animal rights for her Silver Award or build a career network that encourages girls to become scientists and engineers for her Gold Award. Whatever a girl chooses, she’ll inspire others (and herself).

The Bronze Award The Girl Scout Bronze Award is the highest honor a Girl Scout Junior can achieve, recognizing that a Junior has developed the leadership and planning skills to follow through with a project while making a positive difference in her community.

The Silver Award Going for the Girl Scout Silver Award—the highest award a Girl Scout Cadette can earn—gives her the chance to do big things and make the community better in the process. The Silver Award gives girls the opportunity to focus on a local issue they care about, build a team and implement their Take Action project to better the lives of those around her and for herself. The Gold Award The Girl Scout Gold Award is the highest award a Girl Scout can earn. Open only to girls in high school, the Girl Scout Gold Award is the most prestigious award in the world for girls—and the most difficult to earn— and it’s only available to Girl Scouts. Gold Award Girl Scouts are making the world a better place. These young women are inspiring leaders whose Gold Award projects are impacting the worlds of STEM, education, agriculture, medicine and more on a local, national or global level. By the time a Girl Scout puts the final touches on her seven-step project, she’ll have solved a community problem—not only in the short term, but for years into the future—and she’ll distinguish herself in the higher education scholarship process and will enter the military one rank higher.

For information on earning one of Girl Scouts Highest Awards, contact Whitney Fleming at 314.592.2337 or wfleming@girlscoutsem.org .

Girl Scouts are changing their corner of the world and beyond! Going for the Gold In 2017, Gold Award Girl Scout Rea earned the highest award in Girl Scouting by creating interactive study materials to help community members who are preparing to take the U.S. citizenship test. Rea said her Girl Scout Gold Award project was inspired by her own family’s experience — her parents took the exam after 17 years of living in the United States. After witnessing the difficulties of learning the intricacies of our government, Rea partnered with the Immigrant & Refugee Women’s Program to develop learning resources on Quizlet.com. These resources are available to the organization’s tutors and students to use and include hundreds of civic-related questions, forms, interactive games, vocabulary lists, test tips and printable flashcards.

“These materials were made to be shared,” Rea said. “This is useful information and I want them to be beneficial to as many people as possible.”

Rea is among an exceptional group of women who use their knowledge and leadership skills to make a positive change in the world.
