Mohs scale of hardness Mohs' hardness, (Ritz hardness), introduced to mineralogy by F. Mohs 1822 and still the standard and functional method for determining hardness today acc. to ten degrees of hardness, each degree of hardness being represented by a frequently-found mineral. Each mineral classified in this hardness scale (Tab.) can leave a scratch in the previous one, and is itself scratched by the mineral next-higher on the scale. If an unknown mineral is scratched e.g. by apatite (hardness 5) and if it can even be scratched by fluorite (hardness 4), then the material has a hardness between 4 and 5. The degree of hardness of the minerals are so large that the direction dependency of the minerals (with the exception of distene with hardness degrees of 4 and 6) is not significant. Minerals up to hardness 2 can be scratched with a fingernail; up to hardness 4

they can be scratched using a knife, whereas window glass can be scratched by all minerals with a hardness > 6. Degree of hardnessStand mineral 1 Talcum 2 Gypsum or halite (rock salt) 3 Calcite (calcareous spar) 4 Fluorite 5 Apatite 6 Adular 7 Quartz 8 Topaz 9 Corundum 10 Diamond

Bedding-in paste

Application: For inspection of the surface quality. Apply the paste onto the processed parts and rub them against each other. The evenness of the coloured layer provides information on the processing quality.
