This International Standard specifies requirements for high visibility clothing, which is capable of visually signalling the user’s presence. The high visibility clothing is intended to provide conspicuity of the wearer in any light condition when viewed by the operators of vehicles or other mechanised equipment during daylight conditions and under illumination of headlights in the dark.

RIS-3279-TOM RIS-3279-TOM Issue 1 has replaced GO/RT 3279. Railway Industry Standard (RIS) sets out the minimum specification for high visibility warning clothing in the Rail Industry.

High Visibility clothing has a fluorescent surface, combined with reflective material that meets certification requirements in 3 different classes:

Class 3: Highest Level Highest level of protection - required for any persons working on or near motorways or dual-carriage ways or airports. Must incorporate a minimum of 0.80m2 of background material and 0.20m2 of retro-reflective materials. (4 metres of 5cm wide reflective tape)

EN 342 Protective Clothing - Ensembles and Garments for Protection Against Cold

Class 1: Minimum Level Minimum level of protection required for any persons working on a private road or to be used in conjunction with a higher classed garment. Must incorporate a minimum of 0.14m2 of background material and 0.10m2 of retro-reflective material. (2 metres of 5cm wide reflective tape) Class 2: Intermediate Level Required for any persons working on or near A and B class roads, also for delivery drivers. Must incorporate a minimum of 0.50m2 of background material and 0.13m2 of retro-reflective material. (2.60 metres of 5cm wide reflective tape)

EN 342 - Protection Against Cold Environment Protective clothing certified to the European Standard EN342 gives the wearer protection against the cold environment. It specifies requirements and testmethods for the performance of clothing ensembles (i.e. two piece suits or coveralls) for protection against the effects of cold environments equal to or below -5°C. Thermal Insulation Garments are tested on a moving manikin along with either standardised underwear or underwear specified by the manufacturer. The unit of measurement is Icler and is stated in m². It measures the amount of energy per square meter required to maintain warmth – the higher the number the better the rating. Air Permeability Air Permeability measures the ease with which the air can pass through a material. It is a measure of how windproof the garment is and there are 3 classes – 1 to 3. The higher the class the better the result. Resistance to Water Penetration An optional test is resistance to water penetration (a hydrostatic head test), which has two performance level classifications. Clothing that claims this must also be breathable and pass a test for the water vapour resistance of the complete material ensemble i.e. outer, insulation, lining. Clothing claiming to meet the requirements of EN 342:2017 must be marked with the pictogram detailed below. Alongside the pictogram it is necessary to display the performance recorded in the various EN 342 tests: A = Thermal Insulation, measured value B = Air Permeability Class (1 – 3 where 3 is best) C = Resistance to Water Penetration Class (optional) (1-2 where 2 is best) Please note this standard does not contain any specific requirements for head, hand or foot protection, however, sufficient protectionmust be worn along with a thermal base layer for this certification to apply. Garments are tested under the following performance parameters:

Protective Clothing, Protection Against Rain

EN343 is the European standard that applies to garments worn in adverse weather conditions. This standard specifies requirements and test methods applicable to the materials and seams of protective clothing against the influence o precipitation (e.g. rain, snowflakes), fog and ground humidity.

The above pictogram indicates that protection against rain is offered. The standard provides for two performance parameters of which there are 4 levels with Class 4 offering the highest level of protection.
