Designed for four aquanauts, a 20-year operational life and Category 5 hurricane conditions, Vanguard is the first open-ocean human habitat deployed in U.S. waters in more than four decades A new subsea habitat installed on the seabed in the Florida Keys is bringing long-duration human presence back beneath U.S. waters after more than 40 years. Vanguard, developed by ocean engineering company DEEP, has been installed at Tennessee Reef within the Florida Keys National Marine Sanctuary. Designed for crews of up to four aquanauts, it will allow them to live and work underwater during extended scientific and operational missions. Creating that environment required considerably more than designing the habitat itself. The supporting infrastructure had to enable long-duration human habitation while remaining stable under extreme weather conditions throughout a planned 20-year design life. Unique Group, a subsea technology and engineering company, was responsible for much of this infrastructure, from initial surveys and foundation engineering to fabrication, installation support and integration of life support systems. Choosing the seabed The project began with detailed investigations of potential installation sites. Unique Group carried out geophysical and geotechnical surveys including bathymetric mapping, sub-bottom profiling, seabed sampling and laboratory testing. stability, environmental sensitivity and operational requirements. Extreme weather was another critical consideration. A comprehensive metocean assessment modelled extreme storms and cyclonic conditions, establishing the environmental design basis used to define structural loads. The infrastructure was ultimately engineered to withstand conditions associated with a Category 5 hurricane. Building a foundation for 20 years Once the site had been characterized, attention turned to a central engineering challenge: keeping the habitat securely positioned throughout its operational life. Unique Group designed Vanguard's foundation system to meet DNV subsea standards. It combines a gravity base foundation using ballast with drilled tethered piles, providing long-term stability for the habitat and supporting infrastructure. The company also engineered the interface between the habitat and foundation, managed its fabrication in Louisiana and supported construction and installation. Dave Thompson, Group Engineering Director at Unique Group, described the unusual combination of requirements: “We had to design something that protects people at depth, survives a Category 5 hurricane, lasts 20 years, and earns DNV certification.” “A subsea habitat is the kind of project an engineer might see once in a career,” he added. The project brought together engineering teams in four countries. The UK engineering hub led structural and habitat design and fabrication oversight; the U.S. operation in Louisiana managed fabrication and on site execution; engineers in South Africa designed and supplied the gas-panel systems; and the overall program was coordinated through Unique Group's headquarters in the UAE. Structural engineering, survey work, fabrication management, offshore execution and life-support engineering therefore had to progress as parts of a single program while maintaining DNV compliance.
