S UPERVISOR ’ S C HECKLIST FOR P REPARING FOR H EARING

 Carefully review the grievance, as well as the appeal letter or document requesting the hearing to identify which facts are in dispute.

 Review any applicable CBA provisions, district policies, rules, regulations, or procedures.

 Review relevant past practice, including relevant past practices in other departments, other campuses and the district office.

 Consider visiting the scene of events to refresh one’s understanding of the facts.

 Select and recommend witnesses and questions for management counsel’s consideration.

 Assess key points which the supervisor feels strengthens management’s case in this particular grievance and which would be helpful in strengthening arguments.

 Consider the grievant’s major points—and the strengths and weaknesses of the grievance.

 Communicate with other members of the management team for their advice and experience with similar grievance issues.

 Coordinate with the district’s HR Director and/or Labor Relations Officer.
