FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS Howmuch does it cost to rent a facility?

Is insurance required? Yes, insurance is required for all rentals with the exception of private meetings with less than 100 people and picnic shelters with less than 75 people attending. What is your cancellation policy? Cancellations must be made two weeks in advance of booking or 50% of the rental will be charged with the exception of weddings. Cancellations not made at least 48 hours in advance of the bookings will result in the total amount of the rental being charged.

Rentals costs are determined by a variety of variables including size, location, event type etc. Please speak to our booking staff and we can help you find the best fit for your event and budget. Do I need to provide a damage deposit and howmuch is it? Most bookings require a damage deposit which is refundable within two weeks after your event. The amount varies depending on risk factors i.e. a child’s birthday party versus a large scale event with alcohol.

CLOSURE BEGAN MARCH 26, 2018

RE-OPENING EARLY 2020

CONSTRUCTION PHASE

Demo & Discovery Phase June-October, 2018

Construction Access Granted Mid-April, 2018

Site Prep Mid-May, 2018

WE ARE HERE

As part of the recent work to install a new overhead door, the construction contractor discovered rust on a structural support column in the original part of the facility (constructed 40 years ago). The contractor notified City staff and an independent structural engineering firm was brought in to examine all similar support columns. The engineering firm recommendedwe replace all, or part of, 11 support columns in the pool area. City staff immediately moved to undertake the column repairs and replacement. Unfortunately, the scope of this repair is a significant setback to the project completion and will move the pool opening to early 2020. Delays in construction are undeniably frustrating. Staff have explored all possible alternatives to address this recent setback and will continue to complete the work as quickly as possible without compromising the quality of the build. We understand the impact that this closure has on our community and will continue to support individuals, our swim clubs and other pool user groups to try to minimize the impact as much as possible.

MEET THE ARTISTS IN RESIDENCE The Maple Ridge Public Art Steering Committee is pleased to announce that Natali Leduc, Gerry Sheena and Manuel Strain have been selected as the new Artists in Residence. These three artists bring a wide range of perspectives, experiences and skills to the community. They officially started their residencies this past summer. The Artist in Residence program provides an opportunity for artists to create arts-based community engagement projects and activities in exchange for a live/work studio space at City owned properties on Fern Crescent, in Port Haney and a new studio-only space residency at the Greg Moore Youth Centre. The program’s goals are to enhance community cultural development and pride of place by activating and animating neighbourhoods, public facilities and/or parks. Artists from throughout BC and across Canada responded to the call for Expressions of Interest for the Artist in Residence opportunity. The Artist in Residence Program is supported through the Maple Ridge Public Art Steering Committee in collaboration with the City of Maple Ridge’s Parks, Recreation & Culture Department. Additional information is available at mapleridge.ca/parksandrec.

BIOGRAPHICAL INFORMATION ON ARTISTS

NATALI LEDUC | FERN CRESCENT RESIDENCY LOCATION

Leduc has an academic background in Sculpture, French Literature and Creative Writing from the University of Houston and University of Ottawa. She has taught sculpture, French language, literature and creative writing at the college level, as well as bookbinding and art bicycle workshops for at-risk teenagers. Natali creates objects and situations as solutions to real and imaginary problems, with a fondness for interactive contraptions, performances, and experimental puppet shows. Her proposal for the residency includes the “The Little Museum of What?” which will turn part of the residence into a little museum and a hub of creativity. She sees the studio space at the Fern Crescent residence as a learning laboratory and a place for the community to meet and share their experience, knowledge and ideas. Workshops will be offered to the community, aimed at different ages and interests, and may include bicycle contraptions, costumes, poetry, bookmaking, interactive installations, assemblages, puppets, sculpture, performance, weird repairs and much more.

ARTISTS IN RESIDENCE

GERRY SHEENA | PORT HANEY RESIDENCY LOCATION

Sheena is an established Coast Salish carver who has been a full time artist for the past 30 years. He recently completed a project for the Collingwood Neighborhood House in Vancouver, which culminated in the raising of the 20 foot red cedar totempole named “Ancient Cedars Journey Home”. This totem pole was carved outside of the community center with the help of three youth apprentice carvers over ten weeks. He has facilitated community level carving classes, drawing and painting classes and discussion sessions alongside these projects. Sheena is excited to bring his skills, experience and commitment to help build a better understanding between Indigenous and non-Indigenous people in our community. He looks forward to working with the community, engaging in meaningful conversations on reconciliation, learning more about the local Indigenous peoples and engaging residents and visitors in exploring creative processes and projects that will not onlyenhance thebeautyof thearea, but tell storiesof its history. As part of his proposal for the residency Sheena plans to provide painting, designing and carving workshops and to continue his work of designing and carving large sculptures. Strain is an interdisciplinary artist of Musqueam, Simpcw and Syilx descent. Strain works with painting, drawing, sculpture, photography, textiles and video installations. Strain seeks to use lived experiences to inspire social and political change in Canada and deconstruct colonialism. Strain was raised in the suburbanneighbourhoodofMapleRidgewith little knowledge of what it meant to be a person of First Nations descent. This upbringing lead them to examine the construction of First Nations identities – in particular the internal conflicts that arise from imposed identity constructs. Their practice confronts the legacies of colonization that have been left upon the identities of the First Nations people of Canada. Strain plans to use this opportunity to celebrate and recognize the Indigenous lands, knowledge and language, and its relationship and interconnectedness to the people of Maple Ridge, non- indigenous and indigenous alike. In addition, their vision for this residencyistocreateabodyofworkthatiscenteredonaunique intersection of Indigenous arts, language and knowledge, diversity and environmental issues while simultaneously touching upon themes of storytelling and heritage.

COMMUNITY CHAMPIONS is a citizen recognition campaign. Citizens of Maple Ridge were encouraged to nominate their exceptional neighbours according to five categories: artists, athletes, volunteers, storytellers and barrier breakers. Shawn is the fourth of the nominees to be featured.

COMMUNITY CHAMPION | LEADER VOLUNTEER | UMPIRE

Thank you, Shawn, for sharing your story with Maple Ridge. Learn more at mapleridge.ca/2016.

away. You don’t have to leave Maple Ridge to experience the best that BC has to offer. TELL USWHAT IT’S LIKE TO BE THE UMPIRE IN CHIEF. This is now my third year of being the UIC for RMMBA. The first year was a pretty large learning curve but having Dan Herbranson and Tammy Doyle as co-helpers has made the job easier. The first year was a lot of “learning as we go”. Thanks to Tammy, we have implemented a whole new assigning system that has helped allocate over 700 games in 2018. We also have a mentorship program that we have started in RMMBA that helps develop our younger umpires. I am currently a level 4 umpire in the National Program. One of the major components in being in in the National Program is to give back. We have over 50 National certified level 4 umpires in the Province of BC and we are all required to give back as much as we can to our home associations. That is how I started as UIC for RMMBA. The program relies heavily on building the confidence of the younger umpires by reinforcing proper mechanics while slowly introducing other parts to their game. No one was born being a good umpire. Like playing, it takes hours of practice to get better. With the help of the RMMBA executive, who have been very supportive in everything that we do, we have been able to implement this program. It is our hope that we can continue to grow. I haveheardmany stories about abusedirected towards officials at the hands of players, coaches and spectators. Fortunately, we have implementedmany positive rules inMinor baseball to help alleviate some of those issues and we have seen the instances of these kinds of problems on the decline. Thiswill help us keep our younger umpires in the game so they are able to become confident umpires. HOW MANY HOURS DO YOU THINK YOU’VE SPENT VOLUNTEERING OVER THE PAST 30 YEARS? This is a tough one. My volunteer roots go back to my father, Walter Bird. He was instrumental in helping start Port Coquitlam Minor Baseball back in the 70’s. He and my mom spent tireless hours volunteering in everything that their five children did. They were not sideline parents. They were honoured back in 2006 when the City of PoCo decided to

HOW LONG HAVE YOU LIVED IN MAPLE RIDGE? I have lived in Maple Ridge for 26 years. WHAT DOES “COMMUNITY” MEAN TO YOU? I moved to Maple Ridge 26 years ago because it was an affordable place to live and start a family. I quickly realized that Maple Ridge was filled with people from all over the Fraser Valley and Lower Mainland that moved here for the same reason. Community is about everyone being a part of having the same particular interests. Living in Maple Ridge helps build that community feeling. I feel that sports have been instrumental in creating that community spirit in Maple Ridge. WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE THING ABOUT LIVING IN MAPLE RIDGE? There is something for everyone and it is never far away! I love hiking in the trails, going to Golden Ears Park or hanging out at one of the many lakes that are all minutes
