UNIVERSITYOFSANDIEGO • The University of San Diego is an independent Catholic institution of higher educa– tion. Founded in 1949, USO is located on 180 acres overlooking M ission Bay, San Diego Harbor and the Pacific Ocean. The campus is named Alca la Park and is located just 10 minutes from downtown San Diego. 1 Setting ,.
Academics USO enro lls more than 6,400 students who have a choice of more than 50 undergraduate and graduate degree programs. The Un iver– sity incl udes the College of Arts and Sciences, and the Schools of Business Administration, Education, Law and Nursing. Class size gen– erally averages between 10-30 studen ts with the student to teacher ratio being 18: 1. Over 96 percent of USD's full-time faculty hold doc– torates.
Student life Student acti vities inclu de cultural events, dances, boat crui ses, beach parti es, BBQ's, concerts, comedy nights, symposia and much more. Students participate in a w ide range of volunteer projects such as adult literacy tutor– ing, senior citizen outreach, and house buil d– ing in Tijuana. Over two-thirds of the USO community partakes in intramural sports. The Campus The USO campus is one of the most architecturally unique insti tutions found in the country, featuring 18 major buildings designed in an ornamental 16th century Span– ish Renaissance style. In the last decade USO has completed eight major construction and expansion projects. In 1990, the renovated Katherine M. and George M . Pardee Jr. Legal Research Center opened, a facility double the size of the former law libarary that offers the lastest in information technology. Athletics San Diego is a member of the West Coast Conference and competes in 16 inter– collegiate sports on the NCAA Division I level. Men's sports include: basketball, baseball, crew, cross country, golf, football , soccer and tennis. Women sports include: basketball, crew, cross country, soccer, softball, swimming, tennis and volleyball. In the past three seasons alone, six USO teams have advanced to NCAA Tournaments. In 1993, USD's gridiron squad became a charter member of the 1-AA Pioneer Football League.
1995 PREVIEW 2 After graduating over half of her starting lineup from last year's 25-10 club that reached the semis of the NIVC, sixth-year coach Sue Snyder will field a youthful squad in 1995. Although eight of the eleven players are underclassmen, Snyder believes they'll have the talent to have another solid year as they set their sites on
a third consecutive post-season appearance. Gone from last year's squad is Jennifer Wrightson, the 1994 wee Player of the Year, ~ along with MB Amy McMahon (2nd Team All– West Region), OH Jennifer Lofftus (2nd Team AII-WCC), and setter Amy Boyer. The Captain Coach Snyder will be counting on the team's lone senior and team captain, Liz Gunsaulus, to supply both leadership and experience. The 6'0" outside hitter had a productive junior campaign, appearing in 31 matches and sur– passing 500 career digs along the way.
Junior Class USD's other returning upperclassmen include juniors Kym Phillips {5'6" BR/S) and Jenni– fer McMahon {6'0"MB). Phillips appeared in 34 of 35 matches and often broke into the starting lineup as a defensive specialist. She recorded a career-high 13 digs against San Jose State in the NIVG semifinals. McMahon appeared in 21 matches in 1994 and should be a key figure along San Diego's front this year. Sophomore Duo return with WCC Credentials Sophomores Sara Gunsaulus and Luann Petix made their marks in theWCC ranks their rookie season, both getting named to theWCC All-Freshman Team. Gunsaulus, who became USD's first freshman to earn AII-WCC First Team honors, will be the Toreros' premier player. The team's and WCC's top returner in block average {1.28 bpg) and ace average (.36), Gunaulus will be asked to carry a lot of the load. The 6'2" middle blocker also returns as USD's leader in kills average (2.9), attack percentage (.294) and block assists (112). Petix was selected wee Honorable Mention after finishing as the second-leading setter in wee matches (11 .88 apg). Fabulous Freshmen Coach Snyder says her freshman class has lifted the level of practice this fall with their abilities and all should play a key role in the season's success. Two of USD's freshmen were named to the Volleyball Magazine's Fab 50 list -- Kristin Moro (Fountain Valley, CA) and Lisa Ravensberg {Laguna Beach, CA). In addition, outside hitter Deanna Bretz (Tucson, AZ) will get her share of playing time, while Petia Yanchulova (Sofia, Bulgary) will sit out the 1995-96 campaign. " R.1111uuy11 a yuu11y ,c-a111, VVC" a, C" lQIC"IIIC"U a, all positions. Our deepest strength will be our hitting. We are a well rounded, balanced team, and I feel we 'II be able to go to anybody on the team. " Coach Sue Snyder

"_,· Considered one of the most popular Aztec players of all-time, Snyder excelled in the big matches, twice being named to the NCAA West Regional All-Tournament Team and earning AII-WCAA honors in 1982. She finished sixth on the school's all-time ki lls list and became the first team captain, under Rudy Suwara, to be elected by a unanimous vote by her teammates. Snyder, who's averaged 20 wins a sea– son at USO, began her coaching career as an assistant at New M exico (1984-85). She also assisted the West squad at thel 989 U.S. Olympic Festival. Snyder had prior exposure to interna– tional volleyball as a member of the U.S. National Team (1985-86), coached by Terry Liskevych, and in1988 earned the USA Players' Award, symbolic of the spirit and loyality she showed to the team. Snyder's playing career at the amateur level includes six USVBA All-American citations and three national team champi– onsh ips. Snyder currently serves on the AVCA Ranking Committee and the All– Region Selection Committee. A native of Escondido, CA, Sue and husband Ky, USD's Director of Athleti c Development, have one son, Ri ley. The Snyders reside in Scripps Ranch.
SUE SNYDER
Head Coach (6 th Season)
The USO Vol leyball program contin– ues its w inning tradition, due much in part to Head Coach Sue Snyder, now in her sixth season at USO. Last season the Toreros finish ed 25-1 0 and advanced to the semi-finals of the National Invitational Vol leyball Champi– onships (NIVC). In addition, they placed second in the final WCC standings with a mark of 11 -3. In 1993 USO went 24-6 with Snyder guiding her squad to the NCAA Division I Tournament. For her efforts, Snyder was named West Coast Confer– ence Coach of the Year by her peers. In Snyder's five seasons at Alcala Park, the Toreros have never fallen from the WCC's upper division. Snyder's track record when it comes to recruiting is well documented. Her recru its own six individual and five team WCC records. In addition she has produced four All-West Region players, five First Team AII-WCC selections and two WCC Fresh– men of the Year reci pients. This year's squad alone contains three former Volley– ball Monthly Fab 50 blue chippers. Snyder, formerly Sue Hegerle, was hired by USO Athletic Director Tom Iannacone on January 31, 1990. She previously served four seasons as an assistant coach at San Diego State (1986-89), the same school she earn ed a Physical Eduaction degree (1984). For Starters ... It's U - S - D For those media covering USO for the first time this season , the University of San Diego "Toreros" should not be confused with their Division 111 neighbors to the north, UC San Diego (UCSD), or their Division I counterparts to the east, San Diego State (SDSU) . For the curious minded, a Torero is a Mexican bullfighter. All USO teams go by the nickname Toreros.
