1 Sights Set On Trip To NCAA's
1996 PREVIEW
Only in its fifth year of existance, the women's soccer pro– gram has begun to make a name for itself in national circles. The 1995 season saw the team accomplish the best record in school history ( I0-6-1) and almost gain a berth into the NCAA play– offs. The team also finished third in the West Coast Conference standings, only behind national runner-up Portland and quarterfinalist Santa Clara. USO will look to raise their game to a new height in '96 with six starters and six All Conference members returning. The Toreros key losses are the WCC Defensive Player of the Year and the team leader in goals last season. Kennedy Leads Top Returners The Toreros all-time scoring leader Michele Kennedy will be back in '96 for her final season. Kennedy has scored 20 goals and recorded 25 assists for 65 points in her three-year career. All three marks are USO career highs. Kennedy is a three-time All WCC member including First Team honors in '93 and '94. Midfielder Monica Costello also returns for her senior cam– paign. Costello ranks second on the all-time list in assists with 20, nine of those coming last season to lead the team. Costello also has earned All WCC recognition three times including an appearance on last year's Honorable Mention team.
Michele Kennedy, Two-Time All wee, First Team
Defense Key To Success
Last year the defense was the best in school history, only allowing 13 goals and shuting out seven opponents. Michelle Bush and Allison Worden were the keys to this stingy defense and both return in '96. Worden, the Toreros net-minder, allowed nine goals in 15 games for a goals against average of0.61. Bush, an All-WCC First Team selection, led an attack that never gave up more than two goals in any one game and gave up only one goal in seven contests. Also helping out on the defensive front is senior defender and All WCC Second Team member Amy Goaziou. Incoming Class The 1996 roster has nine newcomers, all with impressive credentials. Jessica Crothers and Vanessa Thiele head the list of recruits. Crothers was the Arizona State Player of the Year for Dobson High. Thiele was a three-time First Team All League member for West Hills High. Aimee Wagstaff is also new to the program, transferring from the University of Florida. Wagstaff scored eight goals and totaled 19 points for the Gators last season to rank second on the team. All nine newcomers were All League selections in high school. The '96 Schedule The '96 schedule features five ranked teams including Cal Poly San Luis Obispo, UCLA, Santa Clara, Stanford and Portland. Three of those contests are at home. The Toreros record against ranked opponents in 1995 was 3-2. The Toreros begin the year with a trip to Portland State for two games. The team then plays the next six of seven contests at home including their WCC opener against Santa Clara on September 29. USO will host their own tournament for the first time in the program's history beginning October 25 with Texas and Portland competing. The Toreros will travel to Texas the first weekend in November for a tournament playing Butler and Michigan State. The regular season along with WCC play wraps up November 10 in a home match versus Gonzaga. 1995 WEST COAST CONFERENCE HONORS & STANDINGS

USD COACHING STAFF TonydaLuz Head Coach (5th season)
Head Coach Tony da Luz begins his fifth season as head women's soccer coach at the University of San Diego. Since his hiring on Nov. 7, 1992, da Luz has been in charge of building the newest sport at USO from the ground up. Last season the Toreros barely missed the NCAA playoffs after recording a 10-6-1 record and finishing third in the West Coast Conference. In 1994 da Luz guided the team to eight victories for the second straight year, including a 3-2 upset of#13 St. Mary's College along the way. In 1993 USD won seven of its last eight games to finish 8-8 overall and tied for third in the West Coast Conference. Among the Toreros' '93 victories was a 1-0 upset over No. 20 Washington to take third place at the Umbra Invitational. da Luz has been a familiar sight on the USO sidelines since his days as a player and assistant coach on the men's team. A former USO team MVP and WCC honorable mention selection, da Luz broke into coaching as chief assistant coach to Seamus McFadden prior to the 1984 season. In his seven years on McFadden's staff, daLuz helped USO to five straight winning seasons. Tony and wife, Amy, have two sons, Austin and Tyler. They reside in Del Mar. Jodi Coffman Assistant Coach (2nd season) UC Santa Barbara, 1992 Jodi enters her second season with the USO women's soccer program as an assistant coach. She is currently working toward her doctorate in Educa– tional Leadership here at USO. Coffman earned her Masters in Sport Psy– chology from San Diego State last year. She played three years of soccer at UC Santa Barbara where she graduated in 1992. She also has played on the San Diego Lady Top Guns. Her vast coaching experience includes stints as a Professional Soccer Coach (PQYSA, Rancho Penasquitos); and as a Var– sity Soccer Coach (Santa Fe Christian HS). She has been the coordinator of the Del Mar Recreational Soccer League as well.

Setting The University of San Diego is an independent Catholic institution of higher education. Founded in 1949, USO is located on 180 acres overlook– ing Mi ss ion Bay, San Diego Harbor and the Pacific Ocean . The campus is named Alcala Park and is located just 10 minutes from downtown San Di– ego. The campus was named after a Spanish village near Madrid - Alcala de Henares. Founded by the Greeks as Complutum, the village was later re– named Al Kala (the Castle) by the Moslems. Christians recaptured the vil– lage centuries later and founded a university whose buildings became the inspiration for USD's style. The Campus The USD campus is regarded as one of the most architecturally unique institutions in the country, featuring 18 major buildings designed in an orna– mental 16th century Spanish Renaissance style. Since 1984, USO has completed nine major construction and expansion projects. A landscaped fountain plaza was fini shed in the fall of 1995, con– necting the entrances of the Immaculata and Hughes Administration Center. In 1992, the university completed the 45,000 square foot Loma Hall, which includes an expanded bookstore, a larger mail center, classrooms and labratories. In 1990, the renovated Katherine M. and George M . Pardee Jr. Legal Research Center opened, a facility that offers the latest in information technology.
Academics USO enrolls more than 6,400 students who have a choice of more than 50 undergraduate and graduate degree programs. The university's academic units include the College of Arts and Sciences, and the Schools of Business Administration, Education, Law and Nursing. Class size generally averages between 18-25 students with the student to teacher ratio be– ing 18: I. Over 97 percent of USD's full-time faculty hold doctorates. In the annual ratings of the country's colleges and uni– versities, published by U.S. News & World Report, USO moved from the regional to national category in 1994. The university is ranked among the top l00 schools in the na– tion.
