4. The Golden Key: The purpose of team leadership is to coordinate the strengths of the members in a united plan that enables it to reach its goal.

I. Critically assess the processes and impacts of the team’s efforts: The Principle of EVALUATION.

1. Key Scripture: 1 Cor. 9.23-27

2. Definition of the Concept

a. “To carefully analyze and make judgments regarding both the overall effort and impact of team play, both individually and as a team” b. Evaluation measures critically but sympathetically our team and individual performance in order to gain information about how we might build upon our strengths and compensate for our limitations.

3. The Principle Explained

a. Evaluation involves reviewing our actual deeds against our expectations.

b. This is for the purpose of gaining wisdom into team performance, not assessing blame or guilt.

c. Evaluation, from both leaders and members, requires a sympathetic but careful look at each team member’s performance against their goals and the role’s job description or criteria.

d. Purpose and timing

(1) To improve performance, not censure or berate.

(2) To critique and give feedback; to praise, develop, train, and improve our individual and team actions for greater success for the entire team. (3) Evaluation of performance ought to be encouraged throughout every phase of team play, during practice and game play.
