b. Speak the truth and let no one disregard your role, Titus 2.15 – Declare these things; exhort and rebuke with all authority. Let no one disregard you.

B. Biblical principles for those who mentor and coach

1. A solid mentor examines himself/herself, and does not impose standards on others s/he is unwilling to keep! Matt. 23.1-3 – Then Jesus said to the crowds and to his disciples, [2] “The scribes and the Pharisees sit on Moses’ seat, [3] so do and observe whatever they tell you, but not the works they do. For they preach, but do not practice.”

2. A solid mentor speaks the truth in love , Eph. 4.9-15.

3. A solid mentor “flies out front;” they lead by example , Phil. 4.9.

4. A solid mentor constantly reads the conditions and context affecting those whom they lead and coach.

a. They look ahead, foreseeing trouble and danger ahead, Prov. 22.3 – The prudent sees danger and hides himself, but the simple go on and suffer for it. b. They plan their work, and work a plan, Prov. 21.5 – The plans of the diligent lead surely to abundance, but everyone who is hasty comes only to poverty.

c. They hold their plans loosely, counting on God’s editing and re-direction.

(1) Prov. 16.9 – The heart of man plans his way, but the LORD establishes his steps.

(2) Jer. 10.23 – I know, O LORD, that the way of man is not in himself, that it is not in man who walks to direct his steps.

(3) Ps. 37.23 – The steps of a man are established by the LORD, when he delights in his way.

5. A solid mentor adapts quickly to changing situations ; they do not insist on reliance on strategies which are failing to produce results, Acts 16.6-10 – And they went through the region of Phrygia and Galatia, having been forbidden by the
