3.2.3 Division of Fractions First convert mixed numbers to improper fractions. Keep the first fraction as it is written, but change the division sign to a multiplication sign. Flip the second fraction (switch the numerator and denominator). Simplify factors in the numerator with factors in the denominator. Lastly, multiply the numerators together and the denominators together. Be sure that the fraction is in simplest form. Example: Simplify the expression: × Since they are mixed numbers, change them to improper fractions: 1 2 3 = 5 3 and 2 1 7 = 15 7 Multiply the numerators (top numbers) straight across and the denominators (bottom numbers) straight across: 5 3 × 15 7 = 5 × 15 3 × 7 = 75 21 Finally simplify the answer by dividing both the numerator and denominator by the Greatest Common Factor (GCF), 5. You can leave the final answer as an improper fraction or convert it back to a mixed number. Both solutions are correct:
