Bold new take on Mozart classic

The Magic Flute Oxford Playhouse Thursday, January 11 www.oxfordplayhouse.com

If you’re up for two hours of innovatively-staged, unintimidating, affordable opera, Oxford Playhouse’s Magic Flute is just the ticket. OperaUpClose is an ambitious, Olivier Award- winning opera company that produces high quality English chamber re-imaginings of well- known works and premieres of new operas. Invited behind the velvet rope at London’s most exclusive club, Tamino doesn’t have time to stop for beggars, paparazzi, or even his girlfriend Pamina. Going to bed after a blazing row later that night, they relive the events and encounters of the evening in dreams made extraordinary by the lateness of the hour, their befuddled senses and a touch of magic.

Since the release of his 1996 debut recording, the all-acoustic Big Mama’s Door , Hart has relayed his eclectic musical message around the world. That recording pushed him to receive the 1996 Handy Award for Best New Blues Artist. 2004 saw his first Grammy nomination and 2005 his first win. An evening with his all-electric Muscle Theory will be exactly as it sounds: powerful, visceral, intelligent and audacious.
