INTERNATIONAL STAKEHOLDER PANEL ON ALTERNATIVE METHODS (ISPAM)

Joe Boison, Ph.D. Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) Working Group Chair

He holds a Ph.D. in Analytical Chemistry from McMaster University, Hamilton, Ontario, Canada, after having earned a B.Sc. (Hons) and a M.Sc. (Physical Chemistry) from the University of Ghana, West Africa. In 1986, he accepted a position as a Research Scientist with the then Animal Pathology Laboratory, Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada, now the Canadian Food Inspection Agency where he has since been developing and validating sensitive methods for the detection and confirmation of veterinary drug residues and contaminants in fresh slaughter meats and processed foods. He was appointed an Adjunct Professor (Chemistry Department, University of Saskatchewan) in 1986, Adjunct Professor of Veterinary Biomedical Sciences, Western College of Veterinary Medicine, University of Saskatchewan in 2000, a Consulting Fellow of the World Innovation Foundation (an august body whose membership includes 66 Nobel Laureates) in 2003 and a Fellow of the Association of Official Analytical Communities (AOAC) in 2012. He is a subject matter expert member of the Canadian delegation to the Codex Alimentarius Committee on Residues of Veterinary Drugs in Foods (CCRVDF), a member of the Joint FAO/WHO (Food and Agriculture/World Health Organization) Expert Committee on Food Additives (JECFA), an Expert Reviewer for veterinary drugs for the AOAC Research Institute, Editor for the Journal of AOAC International, a member of the JAOAC Editorial Board and a member of the AOAC Research Institute Board of Directors. In 2011, Dr. Boison received the CFIA President’s Award for Scientific Innovation and Leadership Excellence and was awarded AOAC International’s most prestigious award for lifetime scientific excellence, the H.W. Harvey Award in 2015. He has over 80 publications in peer reviewed Journals. As a trained auditor, he travels extensively around the world auditing slaughter establishments and laboratories of Canada’s trading partners in meat and meat products.
