What’s ROTARY ? R otary is a global network of community volunteers. Rotary members are business and professional leaders who provide humanitarian service, encourage high ethical standards, and help build goodwill and peace in the world. Rotary clubs participate in a broad range of humanitarian, inter-cultural, and educational activities designed to improve the human condition. Rotary builds understanding through international scholarships, exchange programs, and humanitarian grants. In 2002, Rotary launched the Rotary Centers for International Studies in peace and conflict resolution, an innovative program designed to educate tomorrow's peacemakers. In 1985, Rotary launched PolioPlus, an ambitious program to immunize the world's children against polio. Rotary's grassroots leadership, volunteer support, and initial funding for vaccine provided the catalyst for the World Health Assembly’s resolution in 1988 to eradicate polio worldwide. Paul P. Harris formed the world's first service club, the Rotary Club of Chicago, on 23 February 1905. The Rotary motto is Service Above Self and, as it celebrates its centennial, Rotary continues to concern itself with truth, fairness, improved relations between peoples, and world peace. During World War II, Rotary members increasing- ly became involved in promoting international understanding. A Rotary conference held in London in 1942 planted the seeds for the development of the United Nations Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organization (UNESCO), and some 50 Rotary members served as

Message from the President ROTARY CLUB OF BABYLON “Service above Self” The Babylon Rotary Club’s mission is to provide business, professional, and community leaders an opportunity to serve our community and to promote high ethical standards, fellowship, and goodwill. As President of the Babylon Rotary Club, I thank my fellow Rotarians for their dedication and hard work to improve the lives of individuals and families living here and around the world. We recognize our elected officials, local professionals, business owners, advocates, vendors and community members who have been so generous with their time, talents, donations and support of the Babylon Rotary Club’s mission. The Babylon Rotary Club is a 501(c)3, non-profit organization. Your participation in our numerous events and programs throughout the year generates the funds to fulfill our mission. Locally, Babylon Rotary Club focuses on alleviating hunger by providing over $20,000 annually in food to local food pantries and kitchens. Babylon Rotary also provides college scholarships, contributes to Splashes of Hope, supports Camp Pa-Qua-Tuck, donates dictionaries to local grade schools, and contributes to international programs to eradicate hunger and disease. Babylon Rotary Club aspires to be the premier service club for community members and leaders of all ages. We are always seeking new members. To this end, the Babylon Rotary is rolling out a new initiative called Babylon Rotary Community Connection (BRCC). The BRCC is a community forum for connecting charitable, business, civic and government organizations for the purpose of information exchange and responding to our community needs. Babylon Rotary Club About

The Babylon Rotary Club traces its roots to the Babylon Exchange Club and Babylon Service Club. We became the Babylon Rotary Club in 1947, part of Rotary International, the first worldwide service organization, founded by Paul Harris in 1905. Our club is now one of 78 Rotary clubs, with a total membership of about 2000 Rotarians, comprising Rotary International District 7255 which serves Kings, Queens, Nassau and Suffolk Counties in New York. We are an active group of about 50 professionals, community and business leaders who are committed to the Rotarian ideals of friendship, fellowship and service to others. Babylon Rotary conducts and participates in a wide variety of charitable, humanitarian and vocational projects. Our service area covers all of Babylon Village, West Babylon, North Babylon and West Islip. Our club meets each Wednesday at 12:30 p.m. presently at the Post Office Café in Babylon Village located at 130 West Main Street Babylon, N.Y. 11702.

C harlie Cicio is a 59-year-old retired NYPD Police Officer who by virtue of his commitment and dedication gives substance and quality of life to his community by devoting his time to volunteering. His commitments include: • Volunteer Firefighter • Volunteer Military Personnel • Food Coordinator at the Gerald J. Ryan Outreach in Wyandanch New York • Food Coordinator at the Mercy Inn Soup Kitchen in Wyandanch New York One particular mission that is dear to the Charlie’s heart is the Friars Suppliers, a group started by a friend of his by the name of Charlie Moran from Lindenhurst, New York. Charlie was approached in 2009 by Charlie Moran to join him in a mission to Haiti. Although it was six months prior to the earthquake that shook Haiti it was a life changing experience for Charlie. January 2016 was Charlie’s eighth trip with the Friar’s Suppliers and for the past three years, he has assisted in fundraising for the food handout share of the mission. They began with feeding 500 families and are now feeding over 1325 households. The construction crew builds homes that measure 10 feet by 10 feet structures. This year the team managed to build over 150 outhouses. Local Haitians dig the holes by hand (shovels and picks). The building crew then takes over creating and pouring the foundation to construct the structural portion completing the project. Haiti is the poorest country in the Western hemisphere; Provence of Carrefour is just 2 hours out of Port De Prince airport. The medical team examined over 1800 people this year and more than half were children. With visits just twice a year over 70 children, a year perish in this community from complications of malnutrition. Countless children that can use our help never even make it to the medical clinic. All of the Friars Suppliers are volunteers. All volunteers pay their own way so that all funds raised go to the people of Carrefour.

Funding for our projects and charitable donations are obtained primarily through the efforts of our members at our annual fund-raising events. We also hold annual fellowship events, including a spring barbecue, golf outing and year-end holiday party. The Babylon Village Classic 10K Dirty Sock Run

C

C heck in is at a well-organized base near the starting line, adjacent to Park Avenue in Babylon Village. You can participate in a morning of fun and excitement along with hundreds of others. The Dirty Sock Run has grown each year since its inception in 2006. In 2015, we registered over 750 runners, hosted 100 plus volunteers, and enter- tained nearly 400 hundred spectators. After the run, enjoy music, raffles, and prize offerings at the finish line.

The Event

A nnounced by professional Terry Bisono, the Babylon Village Classic 10K DSR is the first race of the Long Island Track and Field Cross Country Series. The Dirty Sock Run is more than just a race. Besides giving runners a chance to compete and have fun, the Run raises desperately needed funds for local food pantries and soup kitchens. Over the past nine years, the Dirty Sock Run has proven to be a vital part of the Babylon Rotary’s effort to eradicate hunger in our community. The Race has generated over $160,000 for the Babylon Rotary Community Food Program. The generous support of our sponsors and race participants have made

the Babylon Village Classic 10K Dirty Sock Run a great success. M ore and more people are drawn to this unique course each year. The beautiful scenic run begins near Park Avenue in Babylon Village, parallels the Carlls River through picturesque wooded trails, goes northward past Southards Pond, wraps around Belmont Lake in North Babylon, and

then leads back to Park Avenue. The trail is a USATF Certified and Sanctioned course. It is fast and mostly flat and supported by five manned water stops throughout the trail.

How the Rotary Help Feed the Hungry A merica is the land of plenty but for one in six people in the United States hunger is a very real struggle. Hunger is not confined to small pockets of society, certain areas of the country, or certain neighborhoods contrary to what many people believe, hunger exists everywhere in America. A

Hunger affects every community in the country, including our own backyards. Those in need are often children whose development is affected by the lack of nutrition, seniors, and hard working adults who simply cannot always make ends meet or are experiencing a sudden hardship. Many go without food; some seek assistance at the local food pantries or soup kitchens. Established over a decade ago, the Babylon Village Classic 10K Dirty Sock Run raises funds to help local charities cope with ever-increasing numbers of people in need of food assistance. The Babylon Rotary Food Program delivers food and essential supplies, year-round, to food pantries and soup kitchens in local and surrounding communities.

THE RACE

The need is ever increasing and our effort to ward off hunger in our community is never-ending. Babylon Rotary volunteers conduct food drives, bread runs, bulk food purchases and special equipment purchases year round. The Rotary depends heavily on your continued support for events such as the Babylon Village

The Endless Summer Food and Wine Expo About

Since its inception in 1991 the Endless Summer Food and Wine Expo has raised funds for the Babylon Rotary Foundation. The funds raised through the Food and Wine Expo are managed through the Babylon Rotary Club. Those funds are dispersed to whichever of the various programs is in need at that time. The Restaurants and vendors are local to Babylon Village. This collaboration not only supports the Babylon Rotary in achieving its goals but also provides the community the opportunity to acquaint with the local business owners creating relationships and strengthening our alliances that help maintain sustainability in the Village of Babylon for the betterment of our community.

Understanding the future needs and concerns of our neighbors, Lockwood Long Term Care Solutions was established five years ago to address the basic desire of all of us: staying right in your community as we get older.
