RECYCLING

We started a journey more than a decade ago. A group of hardworking people with a new technology that no one had ever seen. One that had the potential to change the way people viewed safety gloves. One that could change the lives of workers across the world. We started with one industry and one glove. We changed, altered, tested, and trialed until we began eliminating hand injuries for a few large companies. Eliminated – as in zero – none. That’s when we knew we were changing the landscape of safety forever. We grew and expanded from hand protection to arm, leg, and body protection solving century-old safety problems. We did this by working side-by-side with our customers, creating solutions where others couldn’t. When our customers started asking how we could solve other safety problems, we began to seek an innovative partner who shares our values, leads the market globally, and has changed the safety industry in the same way we changed hand, arm, and body protection. Today we’re proud to say we’ve achieved just that. With the help of an innovative German PPE partner – a global leader with over 90 years’ experience – HexArmor ® is expanding our PPE portfolio to immediately include safety eyewear. This joint venture has allowed us to combine resources and address unsolved issues in safety eyewear through manufacturing, engineering, design, and technical expertise, creating the most advanced line of safety eyewear in the industry. Eyewear is just the beginning of what’s to come in a long line of PPE advancements from HexArmor. ® We look forward to continuing working alongside you, our customers, and bringing you groundbreaking PPE solutions that give workers the protection they deserve.

Because in the end, we aren’t just PPE. We’re the confidence, safety, and livelihood of those we protect.

Safely Going Green

Around the world, more and more people are adopting a “green” lifestyle. As states and municipalities mandate that higher percentages of waste be diverted from landfills, the waste and recycling industry continues to grow. According to the United States Environmental Protection Agency, the percentage of waste recycled in the United States has doubled since 1985 – a trend that is likely to continue.

Waste and recyclable materials move from collection to a landfill or diversion through several processes. The solid waste industry is made up of three main groups: collection, treatment/disposal,

and other waste remediation services. In 2013, approximately 518,000 workers were employed in the solid waste industry with about 377,600 in private industry. Jobs in the industry include drivers, heavy equipment operators, mechanics, and material handlers (sorters) who manually sort through waste streams to isolate recyclables.

Recycling, though desirable and necessary, is extremely hazardous work. Employees are exposed to scrap metal, electronics, batteries, hypodermic needles, used oil and other chemicals on a daily basis. Work-related injuries in this industry can be disastrous.

Waste & Recycling Applications & Hazards

Trash collection, processing, and disposal rank among the most dangerous occupations in North America. Given the health risks associated with this work, a good safety program is a must. Proper hand and arm protection is a key component of keeping your employees safe. The most common hand injuries are abrasions, lacerations, punctures, and impacts. Materials Recovery Facilities At these facilities, recyclable materials are recovered from the waste stream, processed, and baled to be sent to manufacturers. Line workers sort materials by hand that cannot be sorted by a machine. They encounter multiple types of hazards resulting in smash and pinch injuries, cuts and lacerations, even punctures from contaminated hypodermic needles. Needlestick protection is a vital part of their PPE. Construction and Demolition Debris generated during the construction, renovation, and demolition of buildings, roads, and bridges is known as C&D waste. It often contains bulky, heavy materials, such as concrete, wood, metals, glass, and salvaged building components. Dangers include wire, broken windows, and other heavy items. Impact injuries are common, so gloves with impact protection are highly recommended. Electronic Waste The fastest growing waste stream today, e-waste, includes electrical appliances such as refrigerators, air conditioners, microwave ovens, and fluorescent light bulbs, along with electronic products like computers, mobile phones, and TVs. Workers handling e-waste risk smash and pinch injuries from lifting heavy objects, as well as muscle injuries and strains from forceful or repetitive motions. Many electronic components have sharp edges or fragments that can cause cuts or lacerations. Using cut-resistant gloves and arm guards is highly recommended for handling, disassembling, and sorting e-waste materials. Hand protection with enhanced grip and impact protection can also help prevent strains and smash injuries.

Safety Technologies and Testing : Puncture Resistance

The New ANSI/ISEA 105 Test In February of 2016, the ANSI/ISEA 105 standard was updated and published to include two puncture standards: Puncture Resistance (other than hypodermic needle) and Hypodermic Needlestick Puncture. Prior to 2015, there was only one puncture test. This test did not specify the type of puncture hazard that the standard was created for, leaving it open to interpretation. Having both an industrial puncture standard and a hypodermic needle puncture standard allows safety managers to differentiate between what protection they need most, based on more relevant testing and classification.

ANSI/ISEA 105 Industrial Puncture Resistance

ASTM F2878 Hypodermic Needlestick Puncture Resistance

EN388: Industrial Puncture Resistance (Non-Hypodermic Needlestick Puncture) The EN388 probe is the approved puncture test for ANSI/ISEA 105 and measures the amount of force needed for a blunt probe to pierce through the sample material (taken from palm).

• The blunt probe moves at a 90˚ angle at a speed of 100mm/minute • Results are reported in Newtons and are given a 1-5 classification rating, with 1 being low resistance and 5 being high resistance • The test is done 4 times for every palm sample • The lowest score is reported

ASTM F2878: Hypodermic Needlestick Puncture Resistance The ASTM F2878 is the approved puncture test for ANSI/ISEA 105 and measures the amount of force needed for a 25-gauge hypodermic needle to pierce through the sample material.

• The puncture probe (25-gauge needle) travels at a 90˚ angle into the specimen at a vector of 500 millimeters per minute • Results are reported in Newtons and are given a 1-5 classification rating, with 1 being low resistance and 5 being high resistance • The test is done 12 times for every palm sample • The average of the 12 results is reported

Needlestick Protection

Waste sorters regularly encounter small, often hidden, hazardous objects in waste streams including metal burrs, frayed wire, wire rope, glass shards, and hypodermic needles. Sticks or punctures from needles pose a particular danger to workers due to the risk of infection from blood-borne pathogens such as HIV and Hepatitis C. According to the American Hospital Association, one case of serious infection by blood borne pathogens can add up to $1 million or more in expenses for testing, lost work time, and disability payments. Even when no infection occurs, the cost to an organization is estimated to be more than $3,000 per injury for testing, counseling, and time off work. The international standard ASTM F2878 addresses the unique mechanics of hypodermic needle punctures related to PPE and is performed using a 25-gauge needle. Standardized safety tests like the ASTM F2878 have made the selection process easier for safety managers seeking out application-specific PPE. HexArmor ® sets the industry standard for needle protection by providing solutions that use layering of high-dexterity, protective guard plates to arrest and stop punctures from reaching the skin’s surface. These guard plates make up SuperFabric ® ** brand material. HexArmor ® is an exclusive licensee of SuperFabric ® brand material. SuperFabric ® technology blocks and deflects needles, effectively trapping them in the small gaps between each guard plate. When layered, SuperFabric ® provides even higher levels of needlestick resistance.

Our needlestick-resistant gloves and arm guards are thoroughly lab tested using actual 25-gauge needles to give you maximum protection and peace of mind.

Case Study Embracing Ultimate Safety

Working directly with the safety team at a large waste and recycling firm, HexArmor ® designers created a series of protective gloves that resist needlestick punctures, as well as cut hazards commonly encountered in recycling operations including glass shards, steel, wire, and wood splinters. The company had experienced multiple incidents involving needles that had been discarded in plastic bottles which left employees vulnerable to injury and infection. HexArmor ® SuperFabric ® brand material technology was the key to preventing these needlesticks, punctures, and cuts. When tested during sorting and debris handling, SuperFabric ® brand material stopped needlesticks at the point of attack, allowing employees to work efficiently and safely. The collaborative nature of the relationship led to the development of a mandated hand and arm protection program, specifically for material handlers and sorters. The mandate required that all operators and line workers wear HexArmor ® products with SuperFabric ® brand material exclusively while on the job. In addition to developing a complete line of recycling and sorting gloves, HexArmor ® has developed needle- resistant arm guards, which are now also required in the company’s Recycling Protection Mandate. HexArmor ® continues to collaborate with the company to improve current products and to engineer advanced solutions that offer superior protection and extended service in a wide range of waste handling and recycling applications.

Impact Protection

As recycled waste travels down the sorting line, workers must be prepared for anything – including hazardous heavy objects. Likewise, the machines used to crush, sort, and distribute waste can be a danger to employees and their hands. HexArmor ® advanced impact protection is designed to dissipate smash and impact trauma while also shielding hands from various pinch hazards in the recycled material stream.

Real-World Testing HexArmor ® products are tested in real-world applications and are proven to reduce injuries caused by hazards associated with waste and recycling work. We recommend that you field test in order to validate the appropriate level of protection necessary for your application and that you test gloves

and other PPE to assure you select the most effective protection for your workers.

The Highest-Quality Eyewear in the Industry

Well thought-out design. Industry-leading technology. The highest quality materials. This is what you’ve come to expect from HexArmor ® PPE. This trend continues with HexArmor ® Safety Eyewear. Made in Germany and backed by over 90 years of experience, you’ll experience a purpose-driven product unlike any safety eyewear in the Americas. Lens Technology The part of eyewear that gets little attention (but can have a significant impact) is the lenses. Proprietary LTX ® Lens Technology by HexArmor ® provides uncompromised optical clarity. This, combined with maximum impact resistance, makes our HexArmor ® lenses top class. Coatings Technology Not all lens coatings are the same. Typical dip coatings don’t allow the flexibility of anti-fog and scratch resistance to be applied on different sides of the lens. The flow-coating technique used by HexArmor ® allows this flexibility and outlasts all other eyewear on the market. Fit Architecture We take fit very seriously. Properly-fitting eyewear gives wearers confidence. It protects from dust and debris, is free of pressure points, is lightweight, and doesn’t slip. The right eyewear looks and feels good and is easily compatible with other PPE.

Proper protection with no side effects, this is Wearability ® .

How ColdRush ® Works:

Apply water to high- performance material

We’re bringing cool to a whole new level. With this cooling technology, high- performance fabric is moisture activated so that as water evaporates, the microfiber technology combined with natural minerals accelerate the cooling process. Workers are cooler faster – and for longer periods of time. We surveyed 100 workers and found that 93 percent regularly experience heat stress while on the job. According to the CDC, extreme heat causes an average of 658 work and non work-related deaths a year in the United States. If you’re working out in the heat, or managing employees in high-heat environments, be sure to take proper precautions, including checking the heat index, setting up effective water and rest breaks, and using high-quality cooling personal protective equipment (PPE).

Proper Glove Care

Cleaning + Care Most gloves and arm and body PPE are machine washable. Please see hexarmor.com for product specific washing instructions. Increase Your Glove Lifespan by Up To 300% Laundering removes harmful chemicals, perspiration, and everyday grit and grime that can weaken protective fibers and seams. Our team of HexArmor ® solutions specialists are here to help you with this process, and they are more than happy to provide you with all the information you need.

Improper glove care can shorten the life of your PPE. It can also lead to dermatitis, decreased dexterity, loss of protective abilities, and odor. Glove care refers not only to laundering but also proper storage, routine glove checks, and knowledge of materials and their particular strengths and weaknesses. Because there are so many different work gloves on the market, experienced safety managers should be aware of what workers’ gloves are made of and how they will stand up to the applications they’re being used for. Common glove materials include nylon, spandex, leather, cotton, SuperFabric ® *, Kevlar ® , and knit fibers. Each of these materials has a certain way it needs to be cared for. Often there is a blending of the materials, making proper care even more crucial. Proper Storage Gloves should be stored in clean, dry conditions, away from direct sunlight and extreme temperatures. Routine Glove Checks Glove life varies depending on the application, environment, and amount of use. It is vital that you perform routine glove checks before beginning work every day. Take note of areas that have begun to wear down, such as loose Velcro ® or a worn-down name tag. If you see holes in the synthetic leather or TP-X ® material on the palm of your glove, this is an indication that its protective qualities may be compromised, putting you at risk of injury. Lingering moisture or a strong odor are also signs that your gloves may need to be replaced. Keeping an eye out for these issues (and others) takes you one step further from a worksite hand injury, which is the ultimate goal of hand protection.
