Waste & Recycling Applications & Hazards

Trash collection, processing, and disposal rank among the most dangerous occupations in North America. Given the health risks associated with this work, a good safety program is a must. Proper hand and arm protection is a key component of keeping your employees safe. The most common hand injuries are abrasions, lacerations, punctures, and impacts. Materials Recovery Facilities At these facilities, recyclable materials are recovered from the waste stream, processed, and baled to be sent to manufacturers. Line workers sort materials by hand that cannot be sorted by a machine. They encounter multiple types of hazards resulting in smash and pinch injuries, cuts and lacerations, even punctures from contaminated hypodermic needles. Needlestick protection is a vital part of their PPE. Construction and Demolition Debris generated during the construction, renovation, and demolition of buildings, roads, and bridges is known as C&D waste. It often contains bulky, heavy materials, such as concrete, wood, metals, glass, and salvaged building components. Dangers include wire, broken windows, and other heavy items. Impact injuries are common, so gloves with impact protection are highly recommended. Electronic Waste The fastest growing waste stream today, e-waste, includes electrical appliances such as refrigerators, air conditioners, microwave ovens, and fluorescent light bulbs, along with electronic products like computers, mobile phones, and TVs. Workers handling e-waste risk smash and pinch injuries from lifting heavy objects, as well as muscle injuries and strains from forceful or repetitive motions. Many electronic components have sharp edges or fragments that can cause cuts or lacerations. Using cut-resistant gloves and arm guards is highly recommended for handling, disassembling, and sorting e-waste materials. Hand protection with enhanced grip and impact protection can also help prevent strains and smash injuries.
