years. She capped off a stellar collegiate career (1990-93) at Cal Berkeley and won selection to the All-PAC Ten Decade Team. The USD Athletic Aca– demic Support program is designed to promote the academic development of student-athletes. The primary objective is to offer the necessary resources for the academic success of student-athletes as they work to earn their degree. Academic Support services are designed to enhance the student-athlete's overall collegiate experience and encourage development and attainment of academic and career goals. All USD student athletes have access to advising, tu– toring and mentoring services. The mentoring program, Access, was developed in 1999 and teams a graduate stu– dent in the Counseling program with an athlete who would like to enhance study skills, learn about campus resources and receive guidance on goal development and attainment. Student-athletes also have access to the Writing, Math and Logic Centers. They can also take advantage of the resources available to them in the Career Center, Counseling Center and Computer Labs.

"The greatest challenge to a Division I athlete is to balance the demands of sport while taking full advantage of the educational experience offered. Th e purpose of our program is to assist student-athletes in meeting this challenge by offering tutoring, advising, mentoring and a quiet environment to study. The academic support program is designed to assist students in adjusting to life at USD and developing sound academic and career plans. By promoting a philosophy of individual responsi– bility, which encourages each student-athlete to value their educational experience, the academic support program assists each athlete to realize their full potential. " -Shaney Fink
Torero Strength and Conditioning
The Uni versity of San Diego Athletic Department has made a commitment to increase athletic ability throughout the entire student athlete popul ation. Therefore, each student athlete wi ll be given a sport specific training program based on the metabolic demands of their position and sport. This is accompli shed by tra ining for the proper combination of power, strength, size, speed, agili ty, flexibility, endurance, and foo twork. It is the responsibility of the strength and condition ing staff to design and impl ement workouts, teach and demonstrate proper li fti ng technique, and to monitor and evaluate each indi vidual athlete 's progress, while maintaining a positive environment to tra in in. Along with increasing athletic ability, the strength staff also has the goal of decreasing athletic injuries both in and out of the athletic arena. The heart of the strength and cond itioning program is the US D Sports Center weight room. It is open exclusively to student-athletes at spec ific times each day. The weight room contains 5,000 square feet of Olympic platforms , free-wei ghts, se lectorized machines, dumbbell s and cardiovascul ar equipment. The goal of the strength and condition ing department is to educate and motivate each student athlete to maximize their genetic potential and create an environment where athletes can develop into champions both mentally and physically.
