SETTING
The Un ivers ity of San Diego is an independent Catholic institution of higher education. Founded in 1949, USO is located on 180 acres over– looking Mission Bay, San Diego Harbor and the Pacific Ocean. The cam– pus is named Alca la Park and is located just IO minutes from downtown San Diego and the world famou s San Diego Zoo. Hi storic Old Town is just minutes away as well. The city of San Di ego along with thi s campus traces their ori gins to fifteenth century Spain. The campus was named after a Spanish village near Madrid - Alca la de Henares. Founded by the Greeks as Complutum, the vi llage was later renamed Al Ka la (the Castle) by the Mos lems. Chri s– ti ans recaptured the viIIage centuri es later and fou nded a university, the Uni vers ity of Alca la, whose buildings became the in spiration fo r US D's style. Both institutions are located on a hill overlooking a ri ver vall ey.
THE CAMPUS
The USO campus is regarded as one of the most archi tecturally unique insti tu– tions in the country, featuring 18 major buildings designed in an ornamental 16th century Spanish Renaissance style. Since 1984, USO has completed 11 major construction and expansion projects. A five-story, Spanish Renaissance parking garage ( I, I00 spaces) was comp leted in 1998. A landscaped fo untain pl aza was fini shed in the fall of 1995, connecting the entrances of the Immaculata and Hughes Admini stration Center. In I992 , the uni ver– sity completed the 45 ,000 square foot Loma Hall , which includes an expanded book– store, a large r mail center, classrooms and laboratori es . In 1990, the renovated Katherine M. and George M. Pardee Jr. Lega l Research Center opened, a fac ility that offers the latest in in forn1ation techno logy. ACADEMICS
USO enro ll s more than 6,943 students who have a choice of more than 50 un– dergraduate and graduate degree programs. The un iversity's academ ic units include the Co llege ofArts and Sciences, and the Schools of Business Adm inistration, Edu– cation, Law and Nu rsi ng. Class size genera ll y averages between 18-25 students wi th the student to teacher ratio being 18: I. Over 97 percent of USD's full-time faculty hold doctorates. In the annual ratings of the country's co ll eges and uni versities, publ ished by U. S. News & World Report, USO moved from the regional to national category in 1994. The university is ranked among the top I00 schools in the nati on. STUDENT LIFE Student activities include cultura l events, dances, boat crui ses, beach parties, BBQ's, concerts, comedy nights, sympos ia and much more. Students participate in a wide range of volunteer projects such as adul t literacy tutoring, seni or citi zen outreach, and house building in Tijuana. The intramural program is also an integral part of student li fe on campus with over two-thirds of the USO communi ty partaking in intramural sports. ATHLETICS
The Uni versity of San Diego is a member of the West Coast Conference fo r nearl y all sports and competes in 16 interco llegiate sports on the NCAA Di vision I leve l. Women's sports include: basket– ball, crew, cross country, soccer, softball , swimming, tenni s and vo l– leyball. Men's sports include: baseba ll , basketba ll , crew, cross coun– try, golf, football , soccer and tenni s. Sin ce I990 USO teams have won nine confe rence champi onships; made 26 NCAA post-season appear– ances; had 25 Conference Coaches of the Year; 20 Co nfe rence Pl ayers of the Year, 11 Confe rence Freshmen of the Year, fo ur WCC Scholar Athl etes of the Year and 29 All-America se lections. The USO Vo lley– ball program has won two conference championships, made five NCAA post-season appearances, had three Confe rence Coac hes of the Year and two Confe rence Pl ayers of the Yea r.
