CASE STUDY Owner – Birmingham

Car – 2006 BMWMini Fault – Window winder not operating Data – No fault found

2006 Mini was booked in to have driver’s window regulator replaced due to the window not going up / down. A very straight forward replacement and the window now works fine however when parking the car in the collection bay the technician noticed the remote central locking was not working and could not remember whether it did before. Fully expecting the customer to say the key had been working perfectly beforehand, he decided to dig deeper. The fob battery was replaced and basic programming technique used to no avail. Time to worry as the customer was collecting their car in one hour. Assist Plus was plugged in and vehicle scanned however nothing that would relate to the problem with the remote. Nevertheless, the technician forwarded the full scan to Autologic Vehicle Diagnostic Support, making sure to explain the issue in the ‘Work done to Vehicle’ notes section. He received a call from the BMWMini Team who asked him to sit in the car with a basic multi-meter on the 20hz setting. He was guided step by step to carefully remove the casing behind the rear view mirror and pay attention to two wires only (wire colours were pointed out as if Autologic were sat in the passenger seat!) while these two wires were probed a colleague was requested to press the unlock

button and then the lock button on the key fob. Assist Plus asked for the resistance seen which was zero. A double check of probe connection was made but still zero. On that information Autologic were happy to inform the key remote was not working regardless of what work had been done on the vehicle. Phew!! When the customer came to collect the Mini the reception explained how they hoped that by exchanging the drivers regulator the key may have started working again as sometimes they are related. The customer replied – “It hasn’t worked since I went swimming in the sea with the key still in my shorts!” The moral here is the garage owner was given solid confidence by Autologic Assist that they had done nothing wrong. I am sure as a garage owner / technician yourself you can think of MANY similar scenarios!
