FROM THE HEADMASTER
From humble beginnings in 1983, Somerset College has achieved a much esteemed position in education. The success of our students and staff in academic, pastoral, cultural, physical and spiritual domains has flowed from a tangible commitment to excellence and collaboration. One only need visit the beautiful campus, speak with members of our community and especially, observe the vibrancy and joy of our students to know that there is something special happening here. A triangular approach is facilitated through the focus of staff, parents and students on enhancing student outcomes.
“When we all work together, great things happen” - Craig Bassingthwaighte, Headmaster
The co-educational, multi-age mix of students enables a natural progression from external to self-discipline. Our students graduate confident in their own abilities and resilient enough to accept the inevitable challenges that life will provide. The College believes unashamedly in high standards and personal responsibility. Equally our many service programmes provide opportunities for compassion and empathy. After all, “to whom much is given; much is expected”. This initial journey of discovery, for Somerset graduates have only begun their learning, is conducted through a supportive yet challenging set of experiences. Our staff and students walk side by side in this journey and this makes the process all the richer.
Craig Bassingthwaighte Headmaster

Pole Vault Competition
Handicap explanation: Based on PB’s, runup length for the day and expected improvements, coaches HA & TG have considered a result that would be considered a “good” outcome for each athlete. The difference between this performance height and the “standard” has been reduced by a further 10cm to ensure that a reasonable number of athletes get to ring the bell, signifying that they are in contention.
Competition Instructions 1. We have 9 competitors in the women’s comp, 13 in the men’s comp.
2. In order to keep things moving each competitor will get the usual 3 consecutive misses or 8 attempts in total, whichever occurs first. Therefore, you should choose your heights strategically. 3. You cannot enter the competition at a height lower than 2.00m, or more than 40cm lower than your nominated pb. 4. Standard 1 min per attempt, 2 min per attempt when 2 or 3 athletes are left, 5 min per attempt if you are the last vaulter remaining. The yellow flag will be raised alongside the runway at 15 sec remaining. 5. When the pit is ready for your attempt, the recording official will call “athlete X, followed by athlete Y”. Your time starts immediately you are called, so get ready when you are mentioned as the athlete “following”. 6. Make sure that the recording official has your up to date upright placements, if you change your mind after your name is called, the correction is done in your attempt time. 7. Be mindful of the couple of track events that will run around the back straight. Most of the time the back straight adjacent to the PV will be available for run thru’s etc 8. Keep your poles organised and off the ground when not using them. Hurdles will be available to rest them on, on the grass side of the runway. 9. When you achieve a height that, when added to your handicap, equals the set “standard” you will be instructed to ring the bell signifying to your competitors and supporters that you are in contention for a prize. 10. Please stay to the end of your competition for the group photo and presentation.
