Chebeaguers may be interested in visiting the current exhibit at the Outdoor Sporting Heritage Museum in Oquossoc, Maine, near Rangely Lake, where my grandfather, Chebeague nativeWilliamG. (Billy) Hill outshot the legendary Annie Oakley while he was still a teenager. Billy Hill was a self-taught trick shot artist who went on to national fame after besting the then world-famous Annie Oakley in an impromptu competition held in Rangeley. Billy was working as a bellman at Rangeley Lake House at the time. After learning that the famous Annie was in town while touring Maine for Remington Arms, his friends arranged a contest. Using .22 rifles, not shotguns, the two shot at glass target balls thrown into the air. At the end of the day Oakley had smashed 88 out of 100, but local boy Hill…after missing the third ball thrown, had broken 99. Oakley was very impressed with Hill’s marksmanship and told her bosses at Remington that they should hire him, which they did on her recommendation. Hill went on to a long career with the company and as a star attraction traveled putting on shooting exhibitions for large crowds. Hill’s other talents included wildlife and decoy carving, taxidermy, and painting landscapes in watercolors and oils. Examples of his art, trophies, firearms and personal items will be on display in the exhibit that will run through September. - David R. Hill
