Please watch for posters that describe what you can bring to the Town Garage for disposal. Transfer Station Repurpose Area — We have had a problem with unusable items left in front of the dumpsters. While this has traditionally been a place to put items that can be repurposed, some people take advantage and leave items that are clearly trash. We would like to continue the time-honored practice of

allowing people to put certain items here to be repurposed, but please don’t leave broken and unusable items. Check with Gail if you are uncertain. Recycling New s – Please be aware! ECO Maine continues to charge us for contaminated recycled materials . — Contaminated items are basically garbage that gets in the wrong container. There is a continuing problem with loose empty plastic bags and Styrofoam. These are common items that get put into the Recycling compactor that do not belong there, even if they have a numbered triangle! If you have any question about what can be recycled, please ask the attendant or just leave it outside the compactor. We are looking for 0 contamination!!

Tie-up Fees at Chandler’s Cove floats — As proposed by the Coastal Waters Commission, the Rules and Regulations have been amended to require annual tie-up fees at the Chandler’s Cove floats. Marty’s Memories - Heat by Marty Trower

This rare and uncomfortable heat that has landed in our midst makes me want to cancel all plans for anything other than being still. It does bring me back to a time in the late ‘60s when I tried to do something about it, with disastrous results. I was on our sailboat, Kachina , with my parents and a boyfriend from northern, inland Maine. There was no wind and we sat yawing and drifting and baking. I had no patience for it. I was wearing my tiny hot pink bikini, but it was still too much clothing. I asked my parents if they would mind if I just slipped overboard into the cold water for a few minutes of relief. Absolutely not, they said. I had no idea how fast the boat was moving, they said, even though it seemed we were completely still. I wanted that wet, cool temperature of the ocean so badly I suggested many ways to make it a safe dunking. One was that I could wear a life preserver. No, my father said, it would get wet with saltwater and would never dry out. No other ideas met with their approval until finally they agreed to let me hold on to a rope that was tied to the cleat on the stern of the boat.

call out to the crew on the boat that I’d changed my mind, I was cool now, and I wanted to get back up on the boat. They couldn’t hear me; my words were garbled by the huge amount of salt water being forced into my mouth by the of the wake of the boat. Finally, my boyfriend seemed to understand and started trying to haul me back in. I could see his blurry image, his face concerned, his arms pulling on the lifeline I clung to with real fear. My parents were oblivious, looking straight ahead, tending to the tiller and lines. To my horror, I realized that the force of the water had pulled down my bathing suit bottom. It was down around my ankles and I had to let go of the rope with one hand so I could grab it. The top of the bathing suit then filled with water from the force of the pull of the boat and I was in danger of losing the entire thing. Luckily, the young man was fit and strong and got me to the side of the hull where I reassembled my bathing suit back onto my body and realized my parents had seen none of the fiasco. I had to tell them that they were right, the boat was going faster that I thought it was and I probably would not choose this way to cool off again.

The minute I hit the water, it was like whiplash, the boat took off like a rocket and it was all I could do to hang on to the rope. I tried to

CHEBEAGUE TRANSPORTATION COMPANY What’s New at CTC? CTC Annual Members’ Meeting The 6th Annual Member Meeting held on 7/20 was well attended. Following are the highlights: President John Rent called the meeting to order and started the meeting by recognizing current and past directors. John also recognized the contribu- tion of CTC employees and their commitment to customer service and safe- ty. John presented the Treasurer’s Report. 2018 was a very successful year with revenue of $1,238,256 and net income of $188,370. Current assets at year end were $887,763 - a strong position as we assume the debt for con- struction of the new ferry. John also presented the President’s Report. Following are some highlights of the meeting. Continued Focus on safety. CTC continued to exceed the required safety drills; participated in industry educational events; received an excellent Coast Guard inspection; and fo- cused on improvements in safe access to the ferry floats. Our evaluation of a powerful motorized chair proved that we could not safely transport passen- gers with crew assistance below 1/2 tide. Therefore a crew assistance sched- ule was adopted and is published monthly CTC continues to work with the Town of Chebeague to urge installation of longer ramps for the benefit of passengers with disabilities. The Independence John reviewed the features in the new ferry Independence—with a focus on safety. The Independence is four feet longer and two feet wider than the Islander and has a full width pilot house, an enclosed area for deckhands when landing/departing, an improved ladder to the upper deck, and a head. The Independence is financed through a local bank. Sales Tax Exemption (passed in 2019) Through the diligent work of our representatives in Augusta—Senator Cathy Breen and Representative Janice Cooper—CTC was able to benefit from legislation that makes the cost of the Independence’s construction tax exempt. This results in roughly $63,000 in savings to our company! Critical in getting the bill passed were the Island Institute’s Nick Battista, Tom Federle, summer resident, and the many residents who submitted testimony for the taxation committee. Some even traveled to Augusta to present their testimony in person to the Committee (Donna Damon, David Hill, Chris Loder). The entire effort was led by CTC President John Rent who did an exceptional job (We were told we had a very small chance of getting the bill approved, but John persevered!) Thanks also to the Board of Selectmen who submitted a letter in support. General Manger Carol Sabasteanski presented the Service Report, Custom- er Service Program, a review of other 2018 activities, and a look at 2019. The financial statements, slide presentation, and meeting minutes can be found on the Members page of our website. The page is password protected. Members should email the office if they need the password.

THE Launch

Election of Board Members

The Independence was launched on 7/19 at Washburn and Dough- ty in East Boothbay. Over 150 people at- tended the event. Rep- resentatives from Washburn and Dough- ty, and CTC President John Rent spoke at the ceremony. The bless- ing was performed by Reverend Barrie Shep- herd. Arlene Dyer did the christening in memory of Wayne, who served for many years as a CTC board mem- ber and volunteer. Wayne was instrumen- tal in the design and planning for the Inde- pendence and was fondly remembered for his significant contri- butions to our compa- ny. Check out our Face- book page for pictures of the launch. Job Opportunities CTC has openings for deckhand positions . Please email or call the office for more infor- mation. CHEBEAGUE TRANSPORTATION COMPANY What’s New at CTC?

Cousins Lot Maintenance

Yarmouth Daily Parking Spaces Barge will be launched 4/29 In the next few weeks we will be hav- ing the Cousins Lot r e ce i ve a n nu a l maintenance.

The “Independence”

Key: We thank the majority of our customers who respect and comply with our parking policies. For those persons who do not comply, we will tow violators. This includes vehicles parked with no or expired tickets and those abusing the “loaner” policy shown above. It is a long-standing CTC policy that parking permit customers may substitute a “loaner” vehicle when the stick- ered vehicle is being repaired. This program may not be used to, in effect, share a sticker between vehicles. Use of a loaner must be authorized by the Office. Key: Key: “ Loaner” Vehicle Policy

The delivery date of the Inde- pendence has been changed by Washburn & Doughty due to delays in construction of other boats at their yard. The estimat- ed launch date is now 6/21 at 2 PM. The Independence will have to undergo sea trials and required testing for regulatory approval. Therefore, it is uncer- tain at this time when the Inde-

pendence will be home and able to carry passengers. We are planning a launch party at W&D in East Boothbay and are hopeful that many Islanders will be interested in joining us for that event. CTC will provide bus transportation to the launch. As plans are finalized we will post the details.

Community Matters: Pitch in at Chedemption

Wow!! In 2018, volunteers from 13 island nonprofits packed and shipped off well over 150,000 cans and bottles. Impressive as those numbers sound, this task is never ending, and we need your help to keep this Chebeague Island Council program running. The schedule for each nonprofit is listed below and posted on the back wall of the Chedemption shed under the roll of plastic bags as well as on the door of the Community Center. Each nonprofit is asked to provide 27 hours of coverage during their week in return for a share of the proceeds. Your participation benefits each participating nonprofit, keeps several tons of trash from our waste stream, and helps ensure that our roadsides are free from bottle and can litter. So please call your favorite nonprofit and sign up for a slot or two! The Chedemption “Baggettes” could also use your help with the weekly task of loading boxes and bags for transport to Chandlers Wharf every Thursday at 7:45 a.m. Meet us at the transfer station.
