The Babesta Beat plays on!

I t ’ s back to school time and that means the fashion scene is heating up! We’re so excited about all of our new lines that we’ve scouted for the shop and have mixed and remixed our fall collections in not one but two fashion stories, Unplugged and Runaway Circus . In this issue of Babesta Beat we also help break down the whole registry scene and give some advice on high chairs. We get the scoop on several new strollers, including the Bugaboo Bee 3 , and put on our interior design hats in Superior Interiors. We’ve also created some companion content online to keep the fun coming, in between issues of Babesta Beat. You can listen to the Spotify playlist by Rowdy Sprout for Babesta, get tips on dining out with kids (and

some international restaurant recs) a la Brunch with my Baby blog, download our registry checklist (with great advice from our in-store crew) and see bonus images and video from our fashion shoots. We also keep track of tastemaker twins Tristin & Tyler (see Eat, Play, Love, p. 64), and get weekly advice from them for city-cool things to do and the fashions that go with, featured on our blog Thursdays through the fall. All of this should be unrolling throughout the season, as well as a new look for the Babesta site with new features and even more cool content! JENN, AZ & THE BABESTA TEAM

NEW BUGABOO BEE 3 THE CITY IS YOURS

The Urban Stroller

Latest & Greatest

Guess what’s hitting the streets this fall? Launching just in time for fashion week, the Bugaboo–Diesel collab stroller and accessories are ready to rock the runway. The new Bugaboo Cameleon³ by Diesel features army green canvas with grommets and patches, true to Diesel’s cool rocker vibe. The wheels are logoed and handlebar is in faux leather, adding to the stroller’s x-factor. Even if you already have your Cameleon³ in another flavor, the seat liner and footmuff are still fair game, as they are sold separately. Italian clothing company Diesel has long been known for their edgy denim jeans and fashionable clothing and accessories. Now, paired with premium mobility company Bugaboo, they are fueling some of the most stylish city strolls. DIESEL COOL

Clockwise: Bugaboo Cameleon³ stroller by Diesel, 19022, $1,299; Footmuff , 19023, $175; Seat liner , 19024, $80

BEE THREE, WHEEE!

This fall, Bugaboo launches the Bee³, the third iteration of the ultimate city stroller. Not only did Bugaboo amp up the bassinet feature of the Bee, but they also added an extendable sun canopy that’s UPF 50+ protected, and increased the size of the underseat basket. There are a number of other tweaks and improvements for the city stroller, including a reinforced chassis, better rain cover and 5-point harness. We love the gorgeous, robust bassinet (easy to take in and out of the stroller without waking baby), easy one-piece fold, reversible seat and superb suspension for navigating city streets that the Bee³ affords. And this customizable stroller has so many color options, it’s really “as you like it.” Choose from an aluminum or black frame, seat and bassinet fabric in dark khaki, red, gray mélange or black and then select one of eight different canopy colors: off white, dark khaki, bright yellow, red, soft pink, ice blue, gray mélange or black.

GO RETRO

We love retro music, retro fashion and of course, retro furniture. Bloom Baby takes this retro concept into the nursery with a new shapely sleep set—the Retro crib and changer. It’s a modern take on a throwback design. The Retro collection melds seamlessly with a 20th century modern chair, shag rug and graphic art. Bloom Baby has long been known for their high style modern furniture, and this is a stunning addition to their portfolio, earmarked by its high function and high design. Bonus : Babesta customers in New York City get free shipping and free white glove when purchasing the Retro crib and changer.

GEEK CHIC

We discovered a nifty new app that’s set to revolutionize kids shopping! We all know that there is no standard sizing in kids’ wear, and when the newest must-have fashion collection comes in for back-to-school, you don’t want to accidentally buy the wrong size. The AlvaKids mobile app, available on ioS and Android, finds the right size for your kids in each brand you love. It’s simple to use, you just make a quick profile for your child with a few details (age, height, weight, body proportion) and then when shopping online or in-store, grab your phone, choose the child you want to buy for, pick the brand, and let the magic happen. AlvaKids will tell you the perfect size to buy (note you can share with friends & family, otherwise, only you can see your kids’ info). What a relief it is to leave fit up to Alva (named after the original smartypants Thomas Alva Edison) so you can focus on the fashion. Now that’s geek chic!

Babyzen Yoyo stroller , 16745, 16746, $469

Your little one has a sophisticated style, yes? If so, the bedding of choice is Oilo, a company known for its bold graphic prints and cool colors. An interior designer’s dream, the newest collection, dubbed Zara, features gender neutral gray that is soothing and fresh, and can be dialed up with some key bold colored accessories. Organic and original, pieces in the collection, including the fitted sheets, blankets, bumpers, crib skirts, pillows and changing pad toppers, can be mixed and matched to interior perfection. $39-$170. YOYO A GOGO The Yoyo stroller by Babyzen is the ultimate on-the-go ride. Always airplane-ready, the stroller is able to fold down to carry-on luggage size (meaning no gate-check and no risk of breakage!) We decided this summer to put it to the test on a trip overseas. Its itinerary: 10pm flight from Newark to Zürich (Swiss, A330), a brief stint at the airport rolling around the copious amount of shops, and then off to Athens on a smaller “local “ plane. Both instances, the stroller was simple to tuck into the overhead compartment with room to spare. Although we had no stroller-age kids to test it with, it handily carted our luggage to the gates and beyond (and maneuvers very smoothly, I might add). It ended its journey perfectly perched to enjoy views of the Aegean chilling out until the return flight. The Babyzen Yoyo is suitable from 6 months up and can be carried easily on the shoulder when not in use. The fashionable ride is our go-to for easy traveling whether home or abroad.

NICHE MARKET Nook sets the standard in cool, organic mattresses, so when we saw that they jazzed up feeding pillows (notoriously un-chic) we were over the moon. Dubbed the “Niche,” the feeding pillow is organic in and out and made in America. Breathable and comfy, it can also be used as a prop seat for a baby or a side sleeper for mom or dad. The cover is made of organic cotton and eucalyptus, while the core is fashioned from organic kapok. It fits the Babesta niche just right!

The company, started in 2001 by two friends who shared a passion for design, offers a range of goods crafted by Peruvian artisans (the same team, 10 years strong!), and supports fair trade and eco friendliness. The result hits a perfect note for a noteworthy nursery or uber-cute child’s room. BLABLA, BLABLA

Clek seats inevitably have unique names: no surprise these are unique seats! With the high popularity of the Foonf, the car seat masterminds at Clek decided to launch a new, more moderately priced (nearly $100 less), compact version of the super safe convertible car seat called Fllo. Like its big brother Foonf, Fllo features extended rear facing use (up to 50 lbs) and advanced side impact protection as well as energy absorbing crumple technology and an anti rebound bar. It’s approved for aircrafts as well! Go with the Fllo, indeed!

LET'S GET Rowdy Chatting with Laura Angotti of Rowdy Sprout

Babesta scored a backstage pass with a brand that’s been rockin’ the cradle since 2003 with a top-of-the-charts kids’ fashion line. W hat ’ s the playlist of your closet? If you’re a fan of hip baby tee company, Rowdy Sprout, your rotation might include Johnny Cash, Sublime, Jimi Hendrix, Blondie, Bruce Springsteen—and lots of Grateful Dead and Dylan. California native Laura Angotti, the brand’s founder and self-proclaimed “hippy at heart,” has been rocking the kids’ fashion world with her band tees since 2003. Formerly an art installer (she used to hang classics on the walls of everywhere from the Guggenheim to the New York Historical Society), Angotti got an opportunity to appease her love for fashion. Ten years ago, at the behest of a friend, she says, “I made 26 iron on transfer band tees.” She was excited by the idea of shaking up the very pink and blue baby world with something more edgy. Her concept quickly made its way up the fashion charts, and now a decade later, the hits keep coming. We got to chat with Angotti about what’s new at Rowdy Sprout, her new collection “Unplugged” and why, when other trends come and go, the music always plays on.

The Clash 1977 tee , 17637, $37

Were you ever in a band? OMG I have serious musical envy—I’ve never been in a band and don’t play an instrument. I sing, but not well! If you ever started a band, what would your band’s name be? The name of my band would be “The Blistered Nipples.” We’d play a mix between folk and punk rock. I would be a singer/guitar player. We would definitely hit small venues all over the USA. OK, you’ve been making band tees for a decade. Music changes a lot in 10 years. Does musical taste in fashion change? It’s funny because the truth is the same bands are still my best sellers. ACDC, Beatles, anything with Grateful Dead. I constantly am searching for new bands and new licenses but it’s harder than you would imagine to find the people who have the authority to license merch. And then you come across a lot of companies that do everything in house and

won’t work with anyone else which is a real bummer.

How has Rowdy Sprout changed over the years? The longer I do this, the more seriously the bands and merch companies take me. At first it was really hard to get bands and companies to give me license rights. Over time it’s gotten a little easier but unfortunately the bands and companies are getting harder and harder to work with. I have found that I have to work five times as hard to get the same amount of shirts approved. However, over the years, I have also created a much better product than what I first started with—lots of variety in color and style. I also now have two children which has made a huge difference in my designs. In fact, my daughter has inspired me to create a whole new look for girls (coming spring ’15!)

Blondie sweatshirt, 17671, $42

20

babesta beat fall/winter 2014

This season, you launch your newUnplugged line–how did that come about? I’m so excited about Rowdy Sprout Unplugged. The bands are great but many have gotten harder and harder to work with. Unplugged was originally started so I could have something that I have complete control over. I love a good tee shirt and vintage inspiration is always big for me. Of course, I also design things out of need in the marketplace. The sweatpants were created because I simply can never find cool sweats for my kids. I think comfort is key for kids and why not look cool at the same time? Why do you think it’s so important for kids to be exposed to music? I think music shapes us from a very early age. I have memories of music that are almost more palpable than any other memory. Like chocolate, I think music is one of the finer things in life and very important to share with your children!

What do you listen to at home? We listen to a lot of everything. My husband is the DJ of the household mostly! We listen to Spotify all the time and get lots of new music from there. Our current favorite song is by Lord Huron “Ends of the Earth” It also happens to be in my kids’ favorite movie “Walking With Dinosaurs.” If you could meet any musician, dead or alive, who would it be and why ? Easy, that’s Bob Dylan! Lyrical genius.

NEWBORN THE ABC’S OF BABY REGISTRIES

newbie

THREADS: So, you’ll need some basics to be sure, but this is the time you can set baby’s style. Is he more Beatles or Wu-Tang; leather jacket or button-down? We love the organic basics, but can’t help but pepper in some punchy prints, skater duds and rock tees to add flavor. To plan your “layette,” which is essentially baby’s first wardrobe, you want to think about the first year. Get a cross section of clothes in 0-3 months (we like kimono-style for newborns), 3-6 months and 6-12 months. Baby grows quickly and many times boys nearly skip that first size so don’t overdo the 0-3 months! Add some adorable socks and cute shoes for the feet and knit and cotton hats for the head. To keep toasty through the season, a couple sweaters and sweatshirts are nice (we love front-zip for easy on and off), and a little jacket for the colder months is a good call. Always think in layers, as even during the coldest months, it may be quite warm inside and you don’t want baby to overheat. FURNITURE & DÉCOR: Depending on your space, you may need, or want, a bassinet to start. Bassinets are more compact and easy to have in your room, so nighttime feedings are a snap. Some bassinets rock, others have wheels for portability, and still others fold down to store or take along on a trip. For city dwellers where space is at a premium, they’re optional, but they do add to convenience! Along with the crib and the dresser that anchor the nursery, it’s nice to also add a glider or rocker for nursing and reading, and some shelving and storage. When choosing your furniture, it’s key to look at the leadtime for the goods (some custom pieces need up to 12 weeks to manufacture), where they’re made, the materials and style. Once you figure out your basics, you can add some wow-factor to the room through unique art, bedding, blankets, pillows and lighting. WHEELS & GEAR: For city parents, the stroller is key. It’s like your SUV to navigate parenthood, and you want something at once stylish, practical and reliable. Look at your lifestyle—are you in and out of cars or in the neighborhood; do you have a walk-up or an elevator building? All of these factors can help determine the best stroller model for you. Once you pick your stroller, accessorize: for cold weather, a footmuff and some handmuffs are great, and for summer, a sun canopy will help keep things cool. take it category by category and match product features to your lifestyle. In order to make it simple, we’ve compiled some of our best tips and thoughts when building your registry, so you can keep your cool during the excellent adventure of planning for parenthood. R eady to start planning for baby? It can be overwhelming, this whole new world of words and products you never knew existed (and certainly didn’t know there are about 100 iterations of each). But really, it’s not so bad, if you

The car seat of course is another essential gear item (you can’t leave the hospital without one) and you should find the safest model, easy to install and compatible with both your car and your stroller. Another registry-must is the carrier, which makes it easy (and hands free) to take baby around. When choosing a carrier, you should think about who’s carrying baby most, and if they would prefer a wrap or a structured carrier. For weekend getaways or trips to grandma’s house, a travel crib is another great add to the registry, doubling as a playpen to keep baby out of harm’s way in non-kiddie proofed homes or hotel rooms. You’ll also need to choose a diaper bag of course—we say go-unisex (your partner will thank you), with easy-to-access pockets, easy cleaning, and built-in stroller hooks. FEEDING & BATH: Your high chair isn’t necessary until later on (6M+) but if you get an elevated lounger/feeder you can start from newborn. Otherwise, for kick-back-and-relax-time, you can look at traditional bouncers (that sit on the floor). Some sway back and forth, others vibrate and others move with the baby’s own movement. Loungers and bouncers can be just as easily used for a quick snack or a nap. Other feeding accessories include a feeding pillow, easy to grip bottles, bottle cleaners and drying racks. For bath time you’ll need a tub for the sink (the easiest place to bathe a newborn) as well as a selection of bath toys (making bathing time fun) and an adorable hooded towel to make post-bath even more-so. A few sets of swaddles is another registry add—the muslin blankets are so multi-functional, they’re used for everything from wrapping up baby, to serving as an impromptu nursing cover up and keeping the sun out of baby’s eyes while strolling around. TOYS & GIFTS: It’s great to add some rattles and stroller toys to the registry, as well as a nice soft flooring and a sensory playmat to define baby’s tummy time and play space. And don’t forget some books to fill the shelves—as any new parent will attest, a great goodnight story goes a long, long way.

EASY CHAIR What high chair is right for you? Use our simple guide to pick the perfect seat for good eats!

Shopping for a high chair is not as tricky as for a stroller, but there still are some things you may want to consider. Do you need it to fold up, or multi-task? Wipe clean in a jiff or transition to a desk chair? Whatever you’re looking for, we’ve put together our top picks in sweet seats.

TABLE TOPIC 1 : Multi-functional, Newborn-ready.

Although children don’t generally sit up in a high chair until they are 6 months old, some seats can do double duty, acting also as lofted loungers for infants until they make the jump to solid foods. Giving them this lift is great, especially if you have other kids or pets who might be overly interested in the new baby.

OUR PICKS

Bloom, Fresco Chrome Giro high chair, 18871, $650

The Fresco Chrome high chair by Bloom easily transitions from lounger to high chair, and, as a high chair, can be adjust ed seamlessly from table to breakfast bar level. Of course, with a nod to mod, these chairs make a strong style statement in the kitchen.

Bloom, Nano high chair, 6157, $150

TABLE TOPIC 2 : Easy Clean

From top: Oxo, Sprout high chair, 11908, $250; Nuna, Zaaz high chair, 14824, $250; Stokke, Tripp Trapp high chair, 9027, $250

One of the biggest concerns with high chairs, since table manners are not included, is the ease of cleaning. You want to look for chairs with minimal or no crevices, easily removable pieces, and materials that can be swiftly wiped down après-lunch.

OUR PICKS

The Nuna Zaaz features a no crevice design and also has removable dishwasher safe parts. The Oxo Sprout is made of molded plastic and can be wiped down quickly with a damp cloth.

TABLE TOPIC 3 : Long Lasting

When you invest in a design piece, you want to be able to use it for the duration. They’ll all take you through the high chair years (usually 6 months-3 years) and some can be used long after.

Bloom, Fresco Chrome high chair, 1520, $550

OUR PICKS

Where the Bloom Fresco Chrome has the front end, as the only one from 0+, the Stokke Tripp Trapp and Nuna Zaaz can be used from toddler to adult, each holding over 200 pounds. Both of these chairs can saddle right up to the table or can be used as a “satellite solution” (our words) where baby is backed up from the table with a tray.

TABLE TOPIC 4 : Easy to Store

Practically you’re not putting your high chair away that much, as babies and toddlers eat frequently! But, if you’re shopping for a solution for a second home or for grandma’s house, she’ll appreciate a chair that folds down to fit in a closet.

OUR PICKS

We love the slim pack-ability of the Nano by Bloom. It folds right up and is easy to store in a closet when not in use.

Eat play Love Style setting twins about town Tristin & Tyler tell us their favorite spots in NYC and what they love about being city kids. I f you don ’ t follow Tristin & Tyler Tales from the City blog and video series, you are missing out. The twins take a cool, crafty and eco spin on the city for kids. They may be interviewing celebs, like chef Giada De Laurentiis or Nickelodeon’s Reed Alexander, hosting kids fashion show Petite Parade, or pushing up their sleeves for a cool craft. And whatever they’re doing, they’re doing it with style—drop crotch pants, concert tees, Dr. Martens, you name it. We got to catch up with them right before back-to school to get the scoop on where the fun’s at, in the Big Apple! Where do you love to EAT in New York? TYLER: It’s a food truck! SweeteryNYC. OK—it’s really a sweets truck—but I love it because I got to work on it one day for one of our episodes and that truck is one of the most eco-friendly food trucks out there, not to mention it sells great chunky ice cream sandwiches and Snickerdoodle cookies! Where do you love to PLAY in the city? TRISTIN: We love music and we just had our 10th b-day at Fuzipop, a cool dance party for kids with a kid DJ! Everything glows in the dark, so we wore white to stand out! TYLER: Wave Hill in Riverdale has to be one of my fave places. Each weekend they have free activities and workshops and kids really get into making stuff. One time we made paper from scratch and another time we learned all about how bees make honey and saw it happen. Super cool! What do you LOVE about growing up in the city? TYLER: I love NYC because it’s always alive & there’s always something cool to do! One day we climb rock walls at Brooklyn Boulders and the next we hit an awesome street fair. Doesn’t get better than that! Follow more of Tristin & Tyler’s city adventures as they guest blog at Babesta with their series, “Do This, Wear That,” where they’re picking the coolest weekend go-tos and serving up style tips to go-with! I also like Museum of the City of New York because they’re doing awesome activities with graffiti art these days!
