Efrem Leonard's senior season hasn't been exactly what he hoped it would be. But the USD guard .{Ilade his final home appearance, last night against USIU, a memorable one anyway. Making only his second start of an injury-inhibited season, Leonard had 16 points, four rebounds and three as- sists to help the Toreros defeat USIU, 91-78, before 1,044 at the USO Sports Center. USIU finished its season 11-17. USO is 8-19 going into a first-round game against Pepperdine in the West Coast Athletic Conference tourna- ment Saturday at the University of San Francisco. "I'm definitely happy about ending my senior year at home this way, and maybe this will lead to some- thing better next game," said Leon- ard, who played 32 minutes. The 6-foot-1, 180-pounder from Di- amond Bar, Calif., and Mt. San Anto- nio College has endured a season in which he has had knee, ank!P, ham- string and groin injuries and a case of bronchitis. "It has been rough; I missed six games because of the hamstring and six because of a knee, that's almost half the season," Leonard said. "Last week I was about 80 percent; I'm 100 percent now." When USO met USIU a year ago, Leonard had 24 points, his second- highest output of the season {he had 28 against Loyola Marymount). "I guess I play well against USIU because they don't play too much de- fense," Leonard said. "I concentrated on·be1ng ready to set myself when I got the ball and get my shot off." Freshman Gylan Dottin led USO in scoring with 23 and had nine re- bounds. Freshman center Kelvin

Woods had 17 points and 10 rebounds, and junior forward Craig Cottrell scored 14. USIU guard Paul Wilson, who scored 29 Saturday against San Diego State, had 33 last night. Forward Gary Williams scored 16, and center Mike Sterner had 11 points and nine rebounds. USIU played without its top play- er, Demetrius Laffitte, who was side- lined with a knee injury incurred against the Aztecs. USD never trailed, but the Toreros weren't able to shake the pesky Gulls until well into the second half. USO led, 50-42, at halftime, and USIU kept it close until the Toreros made an 11 2 run to open a 70-58 lead with 8:53 to go. They extended that to 75-60 with 7:22 remaining. The teams commited 57 fouls, in- cluding 30 by USIU. USO hit 33 of 43 free throws, USIU 19 of 33. "We executed pretty well, espe:; cially in the second half," said USD coach Hank Egan. "We ran a little more than usual tonight." • • • Senior guard Danny Means joined Leonard in playing his last home game for USD. Means (nine points, three rebounds), Leonard and their parents were honored in pregame ceremonies ... In his final collegiate game, USIU forward Matt Judd had four points and three rebounds, but was also assessed two technical fouls ... Cottrell began the game in second position in the WCAC in field-goal percentage at 64.2, behind Loyola Marymount's Hank Gathers (64.6). Cottrell went 4-for-4 to finish with a USO-record .649 {126-of-194) and win
