Bio: Joe DeLoach OD completed undergraduate training at Texas A&M University where he was designated an Academic Fellow in Biochemical Genetics. He received his Doctorate of Optometry from the University of Houston College of Optometry in 1981. Dr. DeLoach currently serves as Clinical Director of the UEI BridgeBuilder Eye Clinic, an indigent care clinic in Dallas that serves as a primary training facility for UHCO externs and residents. Prior to joining the clinical staff at UHCO, Dr. DeLoach was Chief of Staff of Plano Eye Associates. Dr. DeLoach also served as Medical Director of the EyeCare and Surgery Center of North Texas for almost two decades. Dr. DeLoach is a Past President of the Texas Optometric Association where he was named Young Optometrist of the Year and Optometrist of the Year in addition to fourteen President’s Awards and the Distinguished Service Award. He served as Chairman of the Legal and Legislative Committee twice. UHCO awarded him the Distinguished Alumni Award, William B. Pittman Award, and Educator of the Year Award. Dr. DeLoach also served on the Texas Optometry Board and received the Admiral of the Texas Navy for his service to the State. He lectures extensively on topics related to glaucoma and ocular disease management.

Jeffry Gerson, OD

Bio: Dr. Jeffry Gerson graduated from Indiana University school of optometry in 1997. He then went on to complete a residency at the VA medical center in Kansas City concentrating on ocular disease and low vision. Immediately after leaving the VA, he became faculty at the University of Kansas school of medicine in the department of ophthalmology. Dr. Gerson was responsible for staffing clinics as well as some resident education and development of a low vision clinic. Before entering private practice, he was in several different settings, including 2 ½ years in a retinal referral center where he had access to numerous diagnostic technologies as well as participation in numerous clinical trials. Dr. Gerson has authored several articles in journals such as “Review of Optometry” and “Optometric Management”, and continues to do so. He also lectures frequently on the topics of retinal disease and systemic disease both here in the US and abroad. He is on numerous advisory boards which often times allows him early access to technology. He is a member of the American Optometric Association as well as the Kansas optometric association which named him their 2008 Young OD of the Year. He is a fellow of both the Academy of Optometry and Optometric Retina Society.

Bio: Dr. Fries completed his undergraduate studies at The Ohio State University with a Bachelor of Science degree in Evolution, Ecology and Organismal Biology. He received his Doctor of Optometry in 2004 from The Ohio State University College of Optometry where he graduated cum laude and was inducted into two international optometric honor societies. Dr. Fries completed many external rotations focused on ocular disease and primary eye care. He also has extensive experience in geriatric and nursing home eye care and has spent time as a Clinical Instructor at The Ohio State University College of Optometry with a focus on fitting contact lenses. Dr. Fries was appointed by Governor Ted Strickland to the State of Ohio Optical Dispensers Board in 2007, where he serves as the only optometrist. His term will expire in 2017. He also serves on the Epsilon Psi Epsilon Optometric Fraternity Alumni Board and is a member of the American Optometric Association and the Ohio Optometric Association.

Jerome (Jerry) Sherman, OD, FAAO

Bio: Jerome Sherman, O.D. is Optometry’s most prolific author, publishing over 725 clinical articles, research manuscripts, book chapters and two CDs. He is also the senior author of four books that were published over the past four years, and has delivered over three thousand lectures both nationally and internationally. Over the past three years, he has conceptualized, written and organized Johnson’s Retina Revealed web site. As of Jan 2014, RR has hundreds of cases with over 2900 retinal images and 100 movies exhibiting all the latest retinal technologies. Having graduated from Pennsylvania College of Optometry, he presently holds the position of Distinguished Teaching Professor at State University of New York College of Optometry and the Schnurmacher Institute of Vision Research. Concurrently, he maintains a private practice, The Eye Institute and Laser Center, in New York City. Dr. Sherman is a founding member of both the International Foundation for Optic Nerve Disease (IFOND) and the Optometric Retina Society (ORS) and past President of ORS.

Sherry J. Bass, OD, FAAO, FCOVD

Bio: Dr. Sherry J. Bass is a 1980 graduate of the SUNY State College of Optometry and has been in private practice since 1981. In addition, Dr. Bass is a Distinguished Teaching Professor at the SUNY State College of Optometry where she has been a member of the faculty since 1980. She has taught courses and examined patients in the Ocular Disease and Special Testing Clinic, where she works closely with retinal, corneal and glaucoma specialists. Dr. Bass has over 100 articles in print and has co-authored several textbook chapters in examination of the eye. She is currently co-authoring a book entitled "Avoiding Malpractice: The Do's and Don’ts of Rendering Optometric Care". Dr. Bass served on the New York State Board for Optometry for 10 years and is currently a consultant to the Office of Professional Discipline for New York State. Dr. Bass is a Fellow of the American Academy of Optometry and a Fellow of the College of Optometrists in Vision Development. She is also a member of the prestigious Association for Research in Vision and Ophthalmology, and has presented results of her research projects at their annual meeting for the past 27 years. She has been a member of the New York State Optometric Association and American Optometric Association for 36 years.

Dr. Bass has a national and international reputation as a continuing education lecturer and has presented at over 100 meetings across the country and around the world.

Dr. Bass also maintains her private practice in Woodmere, New York, where she uses her expertise to offer services in all aspects of eye care to patients of all ages. In addition, her specialty in private practice includes the evaluation of children with learning related vision disorders and adults with functional vision problems.

David Kading, OD, FAAO, FCLSA

Bio: Dr. Kading grew up in South Dakota and attended South Dakota State University before coming to the West Coast for his graduate training at Pacific University and a postgraduate residency in cornea and contact lenses. He has achieved fellowship status in the American Academy of Optometry (FAAO) and is the only optometrist in Washington to have Fellowship status in the Contact Lens Society of America (FCLSA). Specialty Eyecare Group provides full service eyecare, with each of the four doctors trained in a different specialty to provide comprehensive eyecare to the standard eye exam patient or the patient referred from an outside provider. Dr. Kading specializes in customizing vision using non-standard contact lenses and in front of the eye diseases in western Washington’s most advanced dry eye clinic. His referral-based practice has global notoriety, with patients from as far away as Iran. In addition to patient care, Dr. Kading spends nearly 50% of his time helping the industry, optometric associations, and other doctors to change patients’ lives. His career coaching company, Optometric Insights, helps to accelerate the success of young practitioners. He has lectured in 38 states and 4 continents on a wide range of eyecare and healthcare topics. He works with 15 of the top eyecare and healthcare companies, consulting on how to become more effective at helping patient and eye disease outcomes. Dr. Kading is the immediate past chair of education for the Optometric Physicians of Washington and was president and board member of the King Country Optometric Association from 2011- 14. In 2013, he was awarded the Young Optometrist of the Year for Washington State. Last month he was recognized nationally as one of the 50 most influential optometrists of all time by his peers.

Bio: Mark Kapperman received his doctorate of optometry in 1987 from Southern College of Optometry in Memphis, TN after attending the University of Tennessee-Chattanooga. He was voted Outstanding Senior by his classmates and received Outstanding Senior Clinician Award. He is a Past President of the Tennessee Association of Optometric Physicians and was named Young Optometrist of the year in 1991. Dr. Kapperman is a member of the Tennessee Academy of Optometry and serves as an Administrator for Vision Source in Southeast Tennessee and Northwest. He serves as Adjunct professor for Southern College of Optometry mentoring senior student interns and serves on the Advisory Board for the Hayes Center for Practice Excellence. Dr. Kapperman founded Kapperman, White and McGarvey Vision Source in April of 1988 as one of the very first businesses on Gunbarrel Road. He is committed to local missions volunteering for Ronald McDonald Room, Volunteers in Medicine and Mustard Tree Ministries. He has completed 17 Christian eye care mission trips to several different Central American countries.

Rishi Singh, MD

Bio: Dr. Rishi Singh MD is a staff surgeon at the Cole Eye Institute, Cleveland Clinic and Assistant Professor of Ophthalmology at the Lerner College of Medicine in Cleveland, Ohio. He also currently serves as the Medical Director of informatics at the Cleveland Clinic. He received his medical degree from Boston University in the prestigious accelerated medical program and completed his residency at the Massachusetts Eye and Infirmary Harvard Combined Program in Boston MA. Dr. Singh then completed a medical and surgical fellowship at the Cole Eye Institute in Cleveland Ohio. He specializes in the treatment of medical and surgical retinal disease such as diabetic retinopathy and age related macular degeneration. Dr. Singh has authored greater than 60 peer reviewed publications, books, and book chapters and serves as the principal investigator of numerous national clinical trials advancing the treatment of retinal disease. He is a frequent invited speaker at national and international meetings as well as continuing medical education seminars. Dr. Singh is also a reviewer for various ophthalmology and diabetes medical publications, including Archives of Ophthalmology, American Journal of Ophthalmology, IOVS, and Ophthalmology. He maintains a strong relationship with drug development and commercial entities by serving on scientific advisory boards. Dr. Singh's current work focuses on the electronic medical records implementation, lean process improvement, and decision support modules for clinical practice. He operates the Cleveland Clinic Electronic Health Record Consulting program. He has been honored with several research recognitions such as the Alpha Omega Alpha Research Award and the American Society of Retina Specialists Senior Honor Award.

Charles C. Wykoff, MD, PhD, FACS

Bio: Dr. Charles C. Wykoff is Director of Research at Retina Consultants of Houston and serves as the elected Deputy Chair of Ophthalmology for the Blanton Eye Institute, Houston Methodist Hospital. He graduated Phi Beta Kappa from MIT, received his PhD from Oxford University in England while on a Marshall Scholarship, and his medical degree from Harvard Medical School. As a medical student, he co-authored the book Fighting Global Blindness. Dr. Wykoff completed his ophthalmology residency and vitreoretinal fellowship at Bascom Palmer Eye Institute, the top-rated eye hospital in the country. While there, he was awarded a Heed Fellowship, the Ronald G. Michels Fellowship Award, which is the nation’s highest honor for a Retina Surgery Fellow, and served as Chief Resident/Co-Director of Ocular Trauma. Dr. Wykoff has extensive expertise in clinical trial design and coordination as well as translational research. He has published over 80 peer reviewed scientific manuscripts and presents regularly at national and international symposia. His research interests pertain to angiogenesis and retinal vascular diseases, including age-related macular degeneration, diabetic retinopathy, and venous occlusive diseases, as well as vitreoretinal surgical topics such as retinal detachment and macular surgery. Dr. Wykoff was awarded the American Academy of Ophthalmology Achievement Award in 2015, the American Society of Retina Specialists Honor Award in 2016 and was appointed to the OSN Retina 150 in 2016 as an Innovator in Medical and Surgical Retina. He is an elected member of The Retina Society, The Macula Society, performs editorial responsibilities including serving as a founding member of the Ophthalmology Retina Editorial Board, and holds leadership positions in many scholarly societies including actively serving as the Academic Program Director for the Vit-Buckle Society.

Laurie Sorrenson, OD, FAAO

Bio: Dr. Laurie Sorrenson, FAAO opened Lakeline Vision Source in 1995. She is a part-time faculty member at the University of Houston, College of Optometry teaching practice management to the fourth-year optometry students. She does some consulting where she helps other optometrists manage their practices better. She also lectures around the country on different topics including staff management, efficiencies, keratoconus and contact lenses. Dr. Sorrenson attended college in Oklahoma. She finished her Bachelor of Science Degree from the University of Houston and received her Doctor of Optometry degree from the University of Houston, College of Optometry in 1985. She received her academy fellowship from the Academy of Optometry in 1999 and in becoming licensed as an Optometric Glaucoma Specialist. Dr. Sorrenson was chosen by the University of Houston, College of Optometry to be the Benedict Practice Management professor for the year 2000-2001. In 1995 the Texas Optometric Association awarded her the honor of Young Optometrist of the Year and she received the Optometrist of the Year award in 2000. In 2002, Dr. Sorrenson was selected as the University of Houston, College of Optometry's Distinguished Alumna of the Year. That same year she gave the commencement address to the University's graduating class. In 2006, she received the Bill Pittman leadership award from the University of Houston, College of Optometry. In 2008, she received the Mollie Armstrong public service award from the Texas Optometric Association. Dr. Sorrenson is currently the PAC chair for the Texas Optometric Association.

Bio: Dr. Netan Choudhry is the founder and medical director of the Vitreous Retina Macula Specialists of Toronto, a premier academic retina practice. He is universally recognized as a thought leader in retinal imaging and the diagnosis and treatment of rare disorders of the retina and vitreous. Dr. Choudhry is actively involved in medical education at the University of Toronto Department of Ophthalmology & Vision Sciences and he is also a faculty member for the Massachusetts Eye & Ear Infirmary as well as Harvard Medical School’s annual Vitreoretinal Surgery Fellows course. He has been an invited speaker at over 75 international conferences and symposia. Dr. Choudhry has published several book chapters in retinal medicine and wide-field imaging. In addition, he has also received research grants to investigate: Age-Related Macular Degeneration, Diabetic Retinopathy & Retinal Vein Occlusions. Dr. Choudhry has served on the board of directors of the American Society of Retina Specialists (ASRS) and the CNIB diabetic retinopathy & vision loss project. Sarah MacIver, BSc, OD, FAAO

Bio: Sarah MacIver completed her Doctor of Optometry degree at the University of Waterloo, School of Optometry. Following graduation, she completed a residency training in ocular disease at the State College of Optometry in New York City. Six months of her residency were spent working in a hospital setting in downtown Brooklyn, the other six months were spent in the College of Optometry’s Ocular Disease Clinic in Manhattan. She has recently joined the faculty at the University of Waterloo as a clinical lecturer in ocular health and is a fellow of the American Academy of Optometry. Dr. MacIver is a clinical supervisor in the Ocular Health Clinic at the School of Optometry and Vision Science and at the Health Science Optometry clinic which is the School’s satellite clinic. She maintains a patient population of glaucoma, Diabetes, Age-related Macular Degeneration (AMD), uveitis, and other ocular diseases. The school’s satellite campus adjoins the family medicine practice associated with McMaster Medical school. Sarah has been involved in interprofessional collaboration with the family medicine practice and optometry. A part of this has been integrating Optometry learners and McMaster residents to help teach the benefits of inter professional relationships.
