Family Ties City has history of employing families

Whether you are a young adult who is looking for their first job or a retiree looking for some supplemental income, the City of Shakopee offers many options. The city not only offers a competitive wage for our positions, but we also try to treat our employees like a family—and sometimes they actually are family. We often find that siblings of our seasonal employees apply for a similar position as their sibling because of the structure of the position or because the siblings share like interests. An example of this is the Sau- ers family: Ben Sauers started working for Parks and Rec in 2015 as an aquatic assistant, and he eventually received his lifeguard certificate and went on to be a SandVenture Assistant Manager. When Ben’s younger brother, Jack, turned 15, he also applied for an assistant position and followed in his brother’s footsteps. William (Bill) Folz and his son Mavryk and daughter Sam all work for the city. Bill is a Guest Services Coor- dinator for the Community Center, Mavryk works as a Recreation Assistant for some of the youth pro- grams and Samworks in guest services. Then there’s the Hillman sisters—Maddie, Kayla and Paige—who all work in aquatics and recreation programming. They followed in the footsteps of their older brothers, who are former lifeguards. It’s not just our seasonal or part-time employees that are often family. Meet the Frassels: Mike Frassel has been a full-time employee of the Public Works Department for 25 years. His daughter Megan started working as a Service Desk Attendant, Recreation Assistant and Birthday Party Host in 2018. In 2021, she became a Community Center Guest Services Coordinator and she now works mornings before attending school at Normandale. Throughout the city organization, there are approximately 30 current employees that are family—whether sibling, spouse, cousin, or child. It’s important that our employees have a sense of belonging and that they feel the city is committed to their professional growth and work-life balance.
