November is a somber month. After the colorful foliage and World Series excitement of October, we have to clean up, rake in hand, and endure the darkest days of the year. This year is made doubly so as we contemplate tragedy in our small community family. Kristin Westra was part of our family: a gifted teacher, mother, and friend who shared generously with a generation of Chebeague children. We who have worked in classrooms know the awesome joy and responsibility of helping people learn. We spoke often of the special dedication of getting out in winter and driving to get on the boat before light and sometimes needing to clear off the car in darkness after the return ferry commute in the afternoon. Add Kristin to that list of mothers who have given so much to our island school. Get that mothers’ memorial built. November 11 is Veterans Day, and this year marks a century since the end of World War I. Visit the memorial on South Road by Schoolhouse Seconds and think about that group of Chebeaguers who made the ultimate sacrifice. This month ends with the celebration of Thanksgiving and the special experience of families trekking cross country to share bounty on our island. We’ve moved our feast to the farm, but we will cherish all the years we gave thanks for our family on Chebeague and thank you all again for all your kindness.
