Notes from the Council

The Wellness Center with Paula Favreau, RN, Is Open for Blood Draws, Blood Pressure Checks, PT/INR Testing, Medication Setup, Flu Shots, Dressing Changes, Suture Removal, Wellness Checks, and Health Information No appointment needed. No charge for these services. Tuesday November 13 & 27 9:00 to 11:30 a.m. Missed the Flu Clinic? Not a problem! Paula has both types of flu vaccine at the Wellness Center.

By now you have probably seen the new steps going in at Schoolhouse Seconds. We are very excited to have this much needed project underway! Thank you to Council Board member Christine Auffant for managing all the details, all the wonderful Thrift Shop volunteers, all the fabulous donations, and everyone who shopped there this summer. The Thrift Shop is one of many amazing island institutions, and the Council is very happy to be able to help it continue. All the proceeds from Schoolhouse Seconds stay on the island and support Council programs that work to meet the community’s needs: whether it is Fuel Assistance, Food Assistance, health care, Schoolhouse Seconds, Chedemption, the Calendar , or community events like the 4 th of July Parade, your support makes it all possible. The annual Flu Clinic has come and gone, and lots of folks were able to take advantage of the chance to have Beth and Mac’s donuts and get a little preventive health care! We were able to offer both flu vaccines this year for the first time—the regular vaccine and the “high-dose” type recommended for people over age 65. If you couldn’t make it to the Flu Clinic, Nurse Paula will have both types of flu vaccine at the Wellness Center and you can stop in and see her November 13 or 27 between 9:00 and 11:00 a.m. You will not, however, get a donut! The

Council would like to wish everyone a happy, healthy, and safe Thanksgiving!!

November is a somber month. After the colorful foliage and World Series excitement of October, we have to clean up, rake in hand, and endure the darkest days of the year. This year is made doubly so as we contemplate tragedy in our small community family. Kristin Westra was part of our family: a gifted teacher, mother, and friend who shared generously with a generation of Chebeague children. We who have worked in classrooms know the awesome joy and responsibility of helping people learn. We spoke often of the special dedication of getting out in winter and driving to get on the boat before light and sometimes needing to clear off the car in darkness after the return ferry commute in the afternoon. Add Kristin to that list of mothers who have given so much to our island school. Get that mothers’ memorial built. November 11 is Veterans Day, and this year marks a century since the end of World War I. Visit the memorial on South Road by Schoolhouse Seconds and think about that group of Chebeaguers who made the ultimate sacrifice. This month ends with the celebration of Thanksgiving and the special experience of families trekking cross country to share bounty on our island. We’ve moved our feast to the farm, but we will cherish all the years we gave thanks for our family on Chebeague and thank you all again for all your kindness.

From the Town Office

Office Hours— We are open Monday andThursday from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. and from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. on Friday. As always, if you need assistance at other times, please don’t hesitate to call (846-3148) and we will do our best to accommodate your needs. The office will be closed November 12 in observance of Veterans Day and November 22 and 23 in observance of Thanksgiving. Transfer Station Hours— Please remember that the Transfer Station hours change on November 4, when daylight saving time

ends.We will no longer be open Monday and Thursday morning, and we will close at 4:00 p.m. on the days the Transfer Station is open. Stone Wharf Parking— Don’t forget that there is no parking in November on the west side of the Stone Wharf to facilitate lobstermen who are hauling in their traps. Thank you for your support, and remember to be kind to one another, Marjorie E. Stratton, Town Administrator

The Mail Thank You Ginny Ballard, Island Commons Staff, Rescue, and CTC Crew!

Island Electric 846-2468 islndelt@juno.com Repair and servicing of electric appliances, water heaters, water-pump systems, septic-pump systems, sump pumps, lamps and light fixtures. Installation and repair of electrical systems and components, including generator sales and service. Installation and repair of wiring for telephones, computers, televisions, and sound systems. Wiring of boats and marine facilities, such as docks and piers. Thanks for your business, and remember to support your local island businesses. Kim Boehm Finally, thank you over and over to the CTC crew who have been so patient and kind in helping my mom up and down the ramp this past year in a wheelchair! It wasn’t until that first doctor’s appointment for a follow-up visit that I realized the importance of checking the tide tables before making doctors’ appointments. Not one complaint from the crew that morning, but I’ll remember that when scheduling future appointments! Thank you for all you do: it’s what makes Chebeague so special! Lynda Hill Oderda and Family It seems like just a couple of weeks ago that I received a call telling me that our mom, Joan Deming, had fallen and was being taken to Maine Medical for evaluation the night before we began driving from Utah to Maine for our summer stay. However, it was actually five months ago, and I didn’t want to miss one more deadline for the Council Calendar in order to thank all the people who continue to care for our mom when we’re not around! First, thanks to the folks on the front line at Island Commons—Amy Rich, who works diligently to keep it open; Vicki Todd, who has overseen and dealt with the day-to-day caregiving issues for the past few years; and the staff, who have the most challenging task of providing 24-hour care to the residents! I’ve worked in long term care for decades, so I know how much it takes to provide the type of home life my mother enjoys at The Commons. No place that I’ve ever worked consistently provides the loving and safe environment that you do! Second (or first…it’s a tie), our heartfelt thanks to Ginny Ballard for being on call/present to assess and treat the residents of The Commons. She always goes above and beyond what many providers are willing to do for their patients. Thank you for staying with mom and being her advocate in the emergency room that night, easing her fears, and after her hip surgery. It’s one of the most important roles that family members have, and we appreciate your standing in for us when we couldn’t be there! Third, thanks as always to the Island Rescue team! You’ve transported our mommore than once on her way to Maine Medical over the past 10 years, and we sincerely appreciate each and every rescue.

Marty’s Memories: Momentum by Marty Trower

Spending summers on Chebeague was always an adventure. Meeting up with friends we didn’t see the rest of the year was fun, although I did get a lot of questions about being Canadian that made me uncomfortable. Did we celebrate Christmas the same way as they did? Did we have to buy a whole new wardrobe to come down here? Of course, I wanted and tried to be like my American friends, but I was different and my accent always gave me away. I realize now that those differences just added texture to the agonizing process of growing up. The strangest part for me was being around boys and having boys as friends. I went to an all- girls school, and I was shy around boys. The saving grace—the universal language—was humor, and it bound us all together. We rode around in cars at night as teenagers, and some island boys imitated “Bert and I” stories, exaggerating the Maine accent and the simple, direct way of looking at life. Stevie Ross was a master at this. I remember him at the wheel of his car, turning around to my Canadian friend and me in the backseat and saying, “You

know, people think we’re kind of backward around here.” That made it even funnier.

The momentum of growing up in fun and anticipating more possibilities out there ahead came to an abrupt halt when Stevie was killed in a freak accident that summer of 1964. I remember seeing the bright sky and bouncing clouds and feeling no solace whatsoever from the heat of the sun. We looked at each other and couldn’t understand. The air around us seemed hollow, meaningless. There would more painful jolts ahead, and I realize now in my “sunset years” that time and acceptance heal. That knowledge is hard to keep in mind, today, as the island collectively and in their own ways grieve for an extraordinary, much loved teacher who has left us way too soon. Kristin Westra left us changed, maybe better people, for just having known her, loved her, and being loved by her in return.

The applications will also be posted on the “Parking and Bus Service” page on our website and available on the ferry. Parking spaces are very limited at the Cousins Island lot and we urge customers to consider moving to the Route One satellite lot. Applications received or postmarked after the due date will not be considered for a Cousins Island spot. Customers who are more than 30 days in arrears for payment (for any service) will not receive a Cousins permit and will only receive a Route One permit when the ac- count is paid in full . NAME THAT FERRY!

Our new ferry will be delivered in the spring of 2019. We need to give her a name! So, we’re staging a naming contest and asking the community for suggestions. Here’s how it works: Submit your entry to the CTC office in writing or via email by 11/30. Be sure to include your name and phone number. You can suggest more than one name per entry or submit sepa- rate entries. A CTC Board committee will select the top five names. This will be a blind contest—the committee will not

know who submitted the entries. Once the top five names have been selected, the community will then be asked to vote on their favorite through a written and online voting process. The winner will be named by 1/31/19. The winner will receive 5 ferry ticket guest books and the honor of naming our new ferry. (If there are multiple submissions of the winning entry, we will draw the winner from a hat.)

COUSINS ISLAND PARKING PERMITS Due to space limitations, it is not possible to provide Cousins permits to all applicants. Priorities must be set. The first priority is to issue a permit to one resident of each household that has met the criteria for a resident household (detailed in our appli- cation). If there are available spaces after issuing one to each household, second household permits will be issued to commuters, island business- es, and families with school children if the first household permit is held by a full time commuter. In 2017, CTC implemented a “partial year” permit. This permit allows parking at the Cousins lot during certain months only. Please review carefully all the terms and conditions detailed in our application pack- age to determine if believe you qualify for a Cousins Island permit.

Contact us at chebeagueislandumc@gmail.com or at 207.846.6987 www.chebeagueumc.org Annual Meeting Saturday November 3— Our annual meeting is Saturday November 3 at 10:30 a.m. Our district superintendent, Rev. Jim McPhee, will be presiding. This is where we elect the leadership of our Administrative Council and Board of Trustees, look at our financials and membership rolls, and hear updates from our various ministries. Join us to hear about where we are and where God is calling us together. Youth Christmas Musical— This year, our children and youth will be putting on a Christmas musical! Details are still in the works, but look for rehearsals to start in late November, following Sunday worship. There will be parts available for all ages and abilities. Interested? Talk to Ben Yosua-Davis at ben.yosuadavis@gmail.com . Guatemala Service Trip— Four persons are going on the next Guatemala service trip: Laura Hamilton, Wyatt Englund, Christine Englund, and Polly Wentworth. Linda Brewster is leading this trip, scheduled for February 23 to March 3. The application deadline is November 23, available on their website: guatemalagrace.org. The cost is approximately $2,000. Interested? Talk to PollyWentworth or Melissa Yosua-Davis for more information. October’s dinner was a wonderful success, raising nearly a quarter of their fundraising goal. We’re continuing to help with fundraising efforts: look for a breakfast/brunch to happen sometime in November! “Won’t You Be My Neighbor” Screening Saturday November 17— Join us for worship during the month of November as we explore together the lessons many of us learned from Mr. Rogers and how they relate to a life of faith. As part of the series, we’ll be watching “Won’t You Be My Neighbor,” the Fred Rogers documentary that was released earlier this year, on Saturday November 17 at 5:00 p.m. Bring a potluck dish to share, and we’ll eat and watch the movie together in the Parish House, followed by a time for discussion. Harvest Baskets for the Food Pantry— Thank you to everyone who helped fill our shelves and our Food Pantry Fund these past couple of months. We appreciate your generosity in helping eliminate food insecurity on this island. This month, we’re decorating our sanctuary space with food pantry baskets. Do you have an empty basket at your house? Fill it with goods for the island food pantry! Feel free to be creative, but here are a few suggestions: An after-school snack basket, a soup and crackers basket, a breakfast basket with cereals and English muffins. Drop off your basket in the sanctuary between November 1 and 15 so that they can be a part of our Thanksgiving distribution. Also, feel free to drop off nonperishable goods in the sanctuary. Online Giving— As you look at year-end giving, prayerfully consider adding CUMC to your list. We fund our ministries primarily through your gifts. Visit our website ( http://www.chebeagueumc.org/donate.html ).
