Nowthat the coolerweather is looming, gardens don't lose as much water to evaporation as they did in the midst of summer. Reduce watering times to at least half that of summer to prevent soils becomingover watered. Also try to water in the morning so soil and plants can dry off before night time. If possible,

2. Australian Farming Families Deb Hunt ‘This is a book about the human aspects of life on the land - the stories of success and failure, life and love, of hardship and celebration - and the passion and gritty determination that characterised every family I interviewed.’ Author Deb Hunt sets out to discover what makes what makes Australian farming families tick. She travels tens of thousands of kilometres to properties at either end of the country, from a vast, dusty cattle run in outback Queensland to the wheat belt of Western Australia and dairy and sheep farms in Tasmania. She introduces us to eight families who survive, even thrive, on the land despite fires, floods, personal hardship and uncertain economic times. We

water directly onto soil and not the foliage - fungal diseases thrive in wet conditions and if the foliage is wet during the night, this creates ideal conditions for fungal growth. It is commonly thought that plants don't need fertilising in winter, but this is not true. Plants will flourish with the right winter fertilising. What is more important is the type of fertilisers used. High nitrogen fertilisers are more suited for spring through to autumn, but not really for winter. However, fertilisers containing high amounts of Potash (Potassium) are excellent for developing deep green leaves and promoting plant strength and vigour through winter. The three major plant nutrients are phosphorus, potassium and nitrogen, but the amount required can vary according to the season. As a rule of thumb, you’ll want to reduce the frequency of fertilising by half during winter when plants are resting and growing more slowly, or you’ll be wasting fertiliser and money, and possibly polluting the storm water system. For plants that are still actively growing in winter such as bulbs and winter vegetables, it’s important to maintain the feed but swap from a high to a low nitrogen fertiliser, as nitrogen promotes active sappy growth which can be a disadvantage to some plants in winter. Also overfeeding with nitrogen during winter can make the foliage softer and more susceptible to disease. For truly dormant plants such as shrubs and deciduous trees there is really no need to fertilise at all during winter. Mudgeeraba Landscape Centre
