EXTERNAL BIN AREA HYGIENE

PURPOSE OF THE TRAINING EXERCISE: To ensure that staff with responsibilities for the external bin area know how to maintain it in a safe and hygienic manner. Training Method This is a practical exercise which should be conducted in the outside bin area. Clean and tidy up the waste area if necessary as you go through the questions and answers with the group .

Safety Policy Ref. 7.53 Waste Disposal and 7.54 Waste Oil Storage and Collection

ASK QUESTION TO GROUP: Why is it important that we keep our outside bin area clean and tidy? CONFIRM CORRECT ANSWERS:  Pests such as rats and mice will be attracted to waste food if left around.  There is a likelihood of slips and trips if the floor is greasy or rubbish is left around.

 If untidy it gives a poor impression to guests if they see it.  Can cause a health risk through bacterial growth and smell.  It is also a legal requirement

EXPLAIN TO THE TEAM:  Our waste is collected by a company appointed waste contractor e.g. Biffa. They will replace or repair our bins if lids or wheels are broken or damaged.  Making sure that bins are kept clean is our responsibility. The bins will keep cleaner for longer if you make sure that all waste is put in bags before binning.  If there is excess waste for the containers, ensure it is double bagged, securely tied and placed next to the container. The waste contractor will remove it if safe to do so.

Demonstrate the cleaning of the bin area and ask questions of the group by referring to the following notes:

 Sweep with a yard brush or stiff brush and put all debris in a bag and put in the bin.  Hose the yard using a hose pipe, use detergent and yard brush to remove any grease residues.  Brush the used water down a suitable drain.

EXPLAIN TO THE TEAM: You must stick to the recycling rules at all times, follow these simple guidelines:  Dry Mixed Recycling only – Dry mix recycling is for the disposal of the following flat packed items – cardboard, paper, shrink wrap/plastics and cans/tins  General Waste only – normal bins that are not labelled, everything else goes in these bins  Glass – primarily used for glass bottles and jars, but other forms of glass can go in here  Cardboard & Paper  Food organic waste recycling – these bins are for food waste only. Food waste can be stored in black bags – but do not overfill as the bag will get very heavy and split
