ELECTRICAL SAFETY

PURPOSE OF THE TRAINING EXERCISE: To ensure that staff understand the Dangers Associated with Electricity and Electrical Equipment

TRAINING METHOD: Explanation and Questioning

ASK QUESTION TO GROUP: What are the hazards to us and our property associated with electricity? CONFIRM CORRECT ANSWERS:  Electric shock  Fire ASK QUESTION TO GROUP: Give me some examples of situations where electricity can pose a danger? CONFIRM CORRECT ANSWERS: There may be a variety of answers, all of which may be correct. Some key examples are as follows:  Incorrect use of electrical equipment  Overloaded sockets  Using damaged or badly maintained equipment  Electrical equipment and installations coming into contact with water.

EXPLAIN TO THE TEAM:

You may have to use from time to time electrical appliances that are portable. This is any electrical equipment which is moved whilst in operation or can be easily moved from one place to another. Vacuum cleaners for example are classed as portable. The fact that these pieces of equipment can be moved makes them more likely to be damaged and provide a greater risk.

ASK QUESTION TO GROUP: Give me some examples of portable electrical equipment you may use in the course of your work? CONFIRM CORRECT ANSWERS: Try and get the group to provide actual answers relevant to their responsibilities. Examples:  Table lamps  Radio’s  Extension leads,  Kettles  Portable mixers ASK QUESTION TO GROUP: How can portable equipment become damaged? CONFIRM CORRECT ANSWER:  By being dropped  Used roughly  The socket being pulled out of the wall due to running out of cable  Bad storage  Normal wear and tear over a long period of time.
