EXPLAIN TO THE TEAM: Our Company will ensure that all portable electrical equipment is formally tested by a qualified electrician on a regular basis. We all also have a responsibility to make sure that the equipment looks safe before we use it and not to use if it looks damaged.  Check that the outer covering of the cable is not cut or shows signs of burning  Check the plug to ensure it is not damaged or that the colored internal wires are showing where the plug meets the lead.  Check that no body has taped a joint in the cable  Check the electric socket for damage before you plug it in. It should not be cracked or wobble about in the wall.  Any defects must be reported to the Manager, this includes broken plug sockets in the wall or damaged building wiring / lamps. Either inside or outside the building.

ASK QUESTION TO GROUP: What must you do if you see any of the problems described? CONFIRM CORRECT ANSWER:

 Do not use the equipment or socket  Inform management immediately.

EXPLAIN TO THE GROUP:

If you need to use an electrical adaptor then you must only use a 13 amp fused gang socket that plugs into the wall with a varying length flex, not a multi-way adaptor as these become unsafe if overloaded.

NB – this also applies to Managers and any staff shared accommodation If you are using equipment outside you must also use a plug in RCD protector which cuts the power in the event of a problem.

Changing Light bulbs

Our guests are at risk from empty lamp holders around the building / outside because several lights run from 1 switch. If changing bulbs never leave an empty light fitting. Leave the blown bulb in place until you have a replacement,

End the training session by summarising the key points:

 Electricity can kill by either electric shock or by causing fires.  You are at risk from portable electrical equipment if not used correctly or is faulty.  You have a responsibility to report any equipment, plugs or sockets that you suspect are faulty.  Only use a fused gang socket. No other electrical adaptor will do. Managers must be aware of the location of all certificates and test records of all equipment within the business
