KITCHEN SAFETY

PURPOSE OF THE TRAINING EXERCISE: To ensure the group are aware of the hazards found in a kitchen and how to undertake kitchen tasks in a safe manner.

TRAINING AIDS:  It is recommended that this training session is conducted within the kitchen  Site Specific Risk assessment – for kitchen risks.

TO THE GR EXPLAIN TO TEAM:

Kitchens can be dangerous places to work and team members must be trained in the safe use of equipment, chemicals, safe delivery and storage procedures they are expected to follow on a daily basis. If we follow some simple common sense procedures we can help prevent the risk of injuring ourselves or others in our team. Together we will look at some of the areas that can present dangers. They are: 1. Deliveries 2. Dangerous machinery 3. Cleaning

1. Deliveries, Storing and Moving Stock EXPLAIN TO THE TEAM:

When removing and storing deliveries away follow all manual handling procedures

Store heavy products such as tins on the bottom shelf of the dry store units

The delivery men should remove the stock on roll cages from the delivery wagon and can only be moved to the final storage place by them or trained team members. If you are checking in a delivery make sure this is done before signing for it.

Explain any points relating to the kitchen in the site specific risk assessment stored in the risk assessment folder.

ASK QUESTION TO GROUP: What is the maximum height that crates or boxes can be stored? CONFIRM CORRECT ANSWER:  Do not stack too high otherwise the cases can become unstable and fall over. The H&S Manual recommends a maximum height of four cases. ASK QUESTION TO GROUP: What are the risks associated with deliveries? CONFIRM CORRECT ANSWER:  Falling cases and roll cages  Strains and back injuries ASK QUESTION TO GROUP: When must a team member enter the back of a delivery lorry? CONFIRM CORRECT ANSWER:  Never, the driver must bring the delivery out, team members must not be within 3m of the tail lift
