PURPOSE OF THE TRAINING EXERCISE: To ensure the group are aware of the hazards found when using the beer line cleaner.

TRAINING AIDS:  This training session should be conducted within the cellar and bar.  Site Specific Risk assessment – 1.13 Beer line cleaning.  COSHH Assessment CA34 – Beer Line Cleaner – Future 2000

TRAINING METHOD:

Beer Line Cleaning – General Rules Explain to the team Beer line cleaner is a dangerous corrosive chemical and there is a serious risk of injury if it is accidentally served to a guest. LineCleaning Not be undertaken when the business is open (Cask ales should be cleaned when the barrels runs out – either when closed or during an off peak session) Only to be carried out by trained persons – usually the Manager Never use glass jugs or other containers used for drinks due to the risk of it being mistaken for a drink – always use a stainless steel bucket. In the event of any incident refer to the Safety Data Sheet for Future 2000 on the outlet document library Future 2000 is a purple coloured line cleaning chemical which gives a clear indication of when it is present in the line. Once the purple colouring has disappeared, the line has been flushed of harmful quantities of the chemical. Summarise the key points of the risk assessment and COSHH assessment. Disused Beer Lines Unused beer lines must be kept with only water in the line. Corrosive line cleaner will damage the line. • There is a higher risk of line cleaner being left in an unused line. • Disused beer lines must be labelled to prevent them being accidentally used. • Managers must regularly check unused lines to ensure they contain only water. • Disused lines still need cleaning every 10 days to prevent infections starting. • Glycol cooling systems should have disused lines disconnected as water will freeze inside them causing them to split. If they will be unused for many months then the wasted beer will cost more than having the line disconnected.
