THE GREASE TRAP

PURPOSE OF THE TRAINING EXERCISE: To ensure that staff with responsibilities for cleaning the grease trap do this in a safe and hygienic manner

TRAINING AIDS:  Grease Trap kit  PPE – Apron, Rubber gloves and Face Mask  Yellow wet floor sign

TRAINING METHOD: This is a practical training exercise. The trainer should demonstrate how to clean the Grease Trap to the group whilst referring to these training notes.

ASK QUESTION TO GROUP: Why is it important to regularly clean the grease trap CONFIRM CORRECT ANSWER:  In order to keep the grease trap working properly to prevent grease buildup, regular cleaning is essential.  If a grease trap is not well maintained, it will not work efficiently EXPLAIN TO THE TEAM: A grease trap is a unit that allows for the separation and collection of fats, oils and greases from the used water.

How to clean your grease trap When beginning to clean your grease trap ensure you are wearing described PPE:

 Completely and carefully remove the cover, be careful when doing this as you may damage the gasket:  Next spoon off the layer of oil and grease that is floating on top of the water in the trap.  Place it into a bucket lined with several bin bags.  Remove the filters, clean them and rinse them off.  Scrape clean the bottom of the grease trap using a strainer. This will remove any debris or particles that did not float to the top of the water.  Clean the bypass vent to remove any residue, do this with a small bottle brush.  Carefully place the filters in their proper position and put the cover back on.  Clean up any spillages and place a yellow wet floor sign over the area The next step in the cleaning process is to dispose of the used grease; you should be able to dispose of the grease through your waste contractor.

Hints and Tips

 Check the grease trap regularly – weekly is advised  Don’t wait until the grease trap is full before you empty it  Check detergent regularly  Dispose of the grease in a safe and proper manner, through your nominated waste contractor

Conclude the training exercise by allowing the trainees to practice draining, cleaning and filtering back the oil using a company approved filter.
