TORERO STADIUM Torero Stadium, home to USD soccer and football, also was home to the San Diego Spirit, the women's professional soccer team that played three seasons in the WUSA (2001-03). With that, Torero Stadium received numerous upgrades that make it one of the best facilities of its size on the west coast. New seating behind the east endzone , as well as on the south side of the field, expands the stadium seating capacity to 7,000 seats. Torero Stadium also received a new grass turf, new lighting and sound system, and additional press box space. A little over a year ago the field was widened by 7 yards; it is now 72 yards wide for soccer. Torero Stadium has also been the host site for numerous men's and women's NCAA Postseason Toumaments.

TOREROS DEFINED

~ ~

I l cl

The University of San Diego, which sponsors sixteen NCAA Division I intercollegiate teams, competes under the athletic nickname of Toreros. In 1961 , the Most Reverend Bishop Buddy, the founding father of USD, announced that the school's nickname would change from Pioneers to Toreros. "The name Toreros is keeping with the friendly relationship which exists between San Diego and Mexico," His Excellency said at the time. Torero comes from the spanish term toro, the bull, and from the word torear, to fight bulls. All of the contestants in the ring are called toreros. Torero is a general term describing a bullfighter and signifies courage, honor and fidelity. USD student-athletes, like the Torero, represent a willingness to stand alone in the ring and accept the challenge. The 2004-2005 school year marks the 44th anniversary with Toreros as the official nickname for USD athletic teams.

2004 Season Outlook

Youthful Toreros Look To Continue Winning Ways

Head Coach Seamus McFadden, entering his 26th year directing the USD men's soccer fortunes, returns 15 players and 4 starters from last year's club that finished 12-4-4 and was a 2nd round NCAA Tournament participant. With the loss of eight seniors, including seven that started, McFadden will be looking for this returning group of Toreros to step up their production. Leading the way will be his two captains - senior midfielder Kevin Wilson (San Juan Capistrano, CA) and junior defender Tommy Von Bromsen (Gothenberg, Sweden). Wilson, who earned 2nd Team All-West Region honors and First Team All-WCC recognition, was one of USD's most consistent players a year ago. He finished with 2 goals and 2 assists while starting all 20 matches. Von Bromsen started 18 of 20 matches at sweeper where he helped the Toreros total nine shutouts. Rounding out the quartet of returning starters is sophomore keeper Lance Friesz (Laguna Nigel, CA) and sophomore forward Ryan Guy (Carlsbad, CA). Friesz, who ranked 24th in the nation in goals-against average (0.76), was named 2nd Team All-WCC. He recorded 8 shutouts on

2004 Team Captains (l-r) Tommy Von Bromsen & Kevin Wilson

the season and was tabbed the WCC Player of the Month for October 2003. Last year Guy recorded 3 goals and 3 assists and is the team's second leading returner in points, second only to Michael Caso (Newhall, CA). Caso, who netted 5 goals and finished with 13 points, leads a solid group of returners for the Toreros. USD will also look for scoring from senior forward Andrew Ehrich (Poway, CA), senior midfielder Nathan Leboffe (San Diego, CA), redshirtjunior Scott Martin (San Diego, CA) and sophomore midfielder Eric Pohl (Corvallis, OR). Rounding out the class of returners is senior forward Conor Duncan (Redlands, CA); junior midfielders Jan Prochazka and Calle Rendahl, both from Gothenberg, Sweden; redshirt sophomores Aaron Croutch (Encino, CA) and Kevin Meissner (San Diego, CA); and redshirt freshman defender Brett Hiroto (Riverside, CA). USD will have nine new players on the squad this season competing for playing time - sophomore defender Rune Knudsen (Albertslund, Denmark), sophomore transfer Sean Giroux (Coto de Caza, CA; Ohio State), sophomore D/MF Blaine Smith (Temecula, CA), freshman goalie Ian Coffman (San Diego, CA), freshman MF/D Leon Abravanel (South Lake Tahoe, CA), freshman defender Julian Santana (Poway, CA), freshman defender Dane McCleary (Kailua, HI), freshman midfielder Dustin Guerrero (San Diego, CA) and freshman midfielder Adam Mariani (Winters, CA). The Toreros, who have notched twelve straight seasons with ten or more victories, will have their work cut out

for them with another strong schedule. During the nonconference, the Toreros will play road contests against UNLV, UC Irvine, Cal Berkeley, Stanford and UCLA. USD will host three nonconference matches against Dartmouth, Michigan State and Cal State Northridge. For the first time in WCC history the Toreros will play a round-robin schedule in league play with six WCC home matches and six WCC road contests. WCC play be– gins October 1st against the Portland Pilots. In the 2004 WCC Men's Soccer Preseason Coaches Poll the Toreros

Torero keeper Lance Friesz are picked to finish 4th. The picks are as follows: 1. Santa Clara, 33 points (3 first place votes), 2. Portland, 30 points (2), 3. Loyola Marymount, 28 points (2), 4. San Diego, 20 points, 5. San Francisco, 14 points, 6. Gonzaga and Saint Mary's, 11 points. Head Coach Seamus McFadden

HEAD COACH SEAMUS McFADDEN - 26th YEAR With all of the success enjoyed by the Torero soccer teams the last several years - eleven NCAA Tournament appearances in fourteen seasons - it is easy to overlook the remarkable job Coach Seamus McFadden has done building the program from the ground up. McFadden has been named West Coast Conference Coach of the Year a record seven times (2000, '99, '98, '95, '94, '92, '86); won five WCC championships; has coached eight WCC Defensive Players of the Year, six WCC Offensive Players of the Year and two WCC Freshman Players of the Year. Last season his squad went 12-4-4, placed second in the highly competitive WCC, and reached the 2nd round of the NCAA Tourney. The team's 5th win of the year, a 1-0 win over UC Irvine, was McFadden's 250th career victory and he enters the 2004 campaign with a career mark of 257-178-34. Two seasons ago he directed USD

to a 14-6 mark and first round appearance in the NCAATourney. In 200 l the Toreros went 12-4-1 and four seasons ago he directed his Toreros to a 16-2-2 record, anotherWCC title and its eighth trip to the NCAAs since 1990. The Toreros reached a national ranking as high as 3rd before finishing the season tenth overall (program-best). McFadden arrived at USD in 1979 and fielded USD's first team in the fall of 1980. That same year he was quoted in the team's yearbook as saying: "I have no doubts that in the near future the University of San Di– ego will become a force to be reckoned with in Southern California intercollegiate soccer." How prophetic his words turned out to be. The 1986 Toreros won 19 of 24 games. The 1990 squad, led by the first of McFadden's four All-Americans, dropped just three games the entire season and ad– vanced to the NCAA Second Round. Those who know McFadden closely could see the writing on the wall many years earlier, when the Irishman led Mesa JC to a 30-4 record over two seasons while at the same time guid–

Seamus McFadden 7-time WCC Coach ofthe Year ing Clairemont High to consecutive CIF-San Diego Section titles and the La Jolla Cup. The whole puzzle came together in 1992 when McFadden had in place several of San Diego's best local talent. Student-athletes, who in the past had looked outside the city to showcase their talents, were suddenly arriving at Alcala Park. The 1992 Toreros showed remarkable poise under their leader, compiling a 19-5 record and ad– vancing to the NCAA Championship Game. The 52-year old McFadden seems to save his best coaching for the big games. Twice the Toreros have marched onto UCLA's home turf and walked away with stun– ning upsets over the heavily-favored Bruins. In 1994, USD shutout No. 6 ranked N.C. State, 3-0, in front of a national cable television audience. In 1998, USD upset Cal State Fullerton, the No. 7 seed in the NCAA Tournament, at Titan Stadium in first round

action. In 1999 the Toreros defeated then No. I-ranked Santa Clara on the road, 2-1 in overtime. USD is 8-10 in NCAATourna– ment games under McFadden's direction. McFadden played collegiately at San Diego State, where he received a B.A. degree in History in 1976. That same summer he was with the San Diego Jaws of the North American Soccer League. Keeping true to his native roots, McFadden took the 1997 squad on a trip to his homeland Ireland during the summer for exhibition games against Ireland and Britain's elite. In the sum– mer of 2002 he is took his players to England. A native of Donegal, Ireland, Seamus and his wife davette have two daughters (Hadley & Rorye) and a son (Conor). The

No stranger to USD, he played four years at goalie for Coach McFadden between 1990-1994. He recorded 17 shutouts during his Torero career and finished with a 37-14- 5 record as the starting keeper. He recorded 16 wins and 9 shutouts as a freshman and went 13-4 during his senior campaign. A 1995 graduate of USD with a B.A. in History, Tommy was the goalkeeper coach

for the San Diego Spirit of the WUSA for three seasons. He earned addi– tional coaching experience as an assistant coach for the boy ' s team at the University of San Diego High School. He has his USSF B license and is also the US National Team Assistant for U-15 and U-17. He competed for four years as a goalie for the San Diego Flash professional minor league team that plays in the A-League Western Divi– sion. Tom and his wife Claire were married on September 6, 2003.

Scott Burcar enters his first year on the staff as an undergraduate assistant. Last year Burcar completed his fourth season of playing with the Toreros where he earned his second straight West Coast Conference Defender of the Year honor. During his four years with the Toreros he started 76 of the 77 matches he played in with the team recording an overall mark of 54-16-7. During that time USD advanced to the NCAA Tournament each year, and won the West Coast Conference championship in 2000.
