My smiles were awkward. Everything embarrassed me: signs of affection, of familiarity, of criticism or praise. Where did this constant embarrassment come from? Something must have happened in my early childhood: too tight a hug frommy grandmother, an aunt’s caresses. I surely must have smiled to get away. The truth is, it pained me to have to smile, since I smiled so I wouldn’t have to give an answer, I smiled to cut a conversation short.
