OCTOBER 2019 CHEBEAGUE ISLAND COUNCIL CALENDAR

Notes from the Hall

The Chebeague Island Council welcomed five new board members at their annual August meeting. Joining the board are Christine Englund, Denise Hamilton, Sarah Hopkins, Corie Meehan and Christine Nadeau. It has been an incredible busy season at Chedemption. You have probably noticed the full trailer and mountain of bags at the transfer station. A crew of volunteers has worked weekly all summer loading boxes and taking them to Chandler’s to be put on pallets, shrink wrapped and shipped to Portland via CBL. There they are picked up by Brighton Avenue Redemption. We will be shipping weekly until it is all cleared up. Thanks to all the Chedemption volunteers who keep this program rolling along. If someone has the need for the Samaritan or fuel assistance fund, please contact Ester Knight 846- 4178. All requests are confidential. The Hall has had another busy summer. We are grateful to the organizers of Island Music Night and the craft fair for their generous donations and pleased to have been hosts to yet another year of the CRC children’s theater program and the Ladies Aid Fair, among other fun events. The siding of the Community Center has been completed, and painting of the shake shingles and doors is imminent. Erin Whetham is designing the landscaping plan to wrap around the building and complement the existing layout, so by next summer you should expect a total transformation of the building! The Community Center is also researching the cost of heat pumps to provide air conditioning for the building, and the Hall is working with Chip Emery to buy and install a sound system. Thanks to the Chebeague Fire Department for their donation of a pull-down screen for the stage area, we will also soon be able to see multi-media presentations without squinting and trying to block out the sun’s rays. Notes From The Council

The Hall’s soup and Community Lunch programs are in transition. Community Lunch will now become Community Supper and be offered three times a year: Anything but Turkey in November, Italian Night in January, and International Night in March. Each supper will include a BYOB option. Soup will be offered eachWednesday if possible frommid-October through April, but to do so, Ruth is asking for weekly volunteers in the kitchen. If no one volunteers to help shop, cook, serve, and clean, the soup program will go the way of Community Lunch. Come winter, the Hall is the only place that serves food to the public on Wednesdays, so if you value this service, please show your support by volunteering. You may also sponsor a month of soups for $300. We already have sponsors for the three Community Suppers, including Rich Plumbing and Chebeague Water Taxi. The Hall’s coffee hour is in full swing, with Susie Stav at the helm and Gina whipping up toothsome baked goods each Wednesday from 9:00 to 10:00. Stop by and catch up on the latest island news!

From the Town Office

Office Hours — We are open Monday, Wednesday, Thursday and Friday from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. As always, if you need assistance during other days and times, please don’t hesitate to call and we will do our best to accommodate your needs. Call 846-3148 for information. **PLEASE NOTE** We will be closed Monday, October 14th for Columbus Day. Planning Board Vacancies — There are three vacancies on the Planning Board. To apply, submit a letter of interest and application (available on the Town website) or at the Town Office. All applications and letters of interest are due by October 7, 2019. Coyotes — Scott Lindsay, State Wildlife Biologist from Inland Fisheries and Wildlife, visited Chebeague Island September 18 th and answered questions and concerns about coyotes. Some of his recommendations for pet owners are (1) Stay with your dog when you let them out, (2) keep your pets inside overnight, and (3) use extra caution dusk through dawn. He also explained that there is a long hunting season for coyotes and they can also be trapped. We have information here at the Town Office if you want more details about hunting and trapping rules and regulations. Recycling News — Please be aware! ECO Maine continues to charge us for contaminated recycled materials. Good news! Our last recycling load was only

2% contaminated! We are improving. Contaminated items are basically garbage that gets in the wrong container. There is a continuing problem with loose empty plastic bags and Styrofoam. These are common items that get put into the Recycling compactor that do not belong there, even if they have a numbered triangle! If you have any questions about what can be recycled, please ask the attendant or just leave it outside the compactor. We are looking for 0 contamination!! Tax Bills — Tax bills weremailed recently and the first half was due September 30 th . If you have any questions, please call the Town Office. The tax bills are based on the owner as of April 1, 2019. Paving Project — The paving was scheduled to begin August 26th, somost of the project will probably be completed by the time you read this. The work will be done on South Road and East Shore Drive from the Chebeague Inn to the end of the paved road, Division Point Road and Bar Point Road. We will also be applying a hot mix shim to South Road across from the tennis courts and improving the paved areas at the school.

Thank you for your support, and remember to be kind to one another,

The Museum Needs You! T he Historical Society wants to tell island stories through the eyes of its children. The one thing we all have in common is childhood so if you spent any part of your childhood - year-round or summer on Chebeague, the Historical Society hopes that you will share childhood artifacts and your favorite Chebeague childhood picture so that it can be used in the 2020 exhibit, Growing Up On Chebeague . We are also looking for childhood photos of your ancestors like the Halloween photo on this Calendar cover. We plan to have one wall with folks favorite photos (going back to the beginning of photography) as well as sections of the exhibit showing birthday parties, picnics, sports, working, boating, fishing, playing, fashion, island weddings, holidays, organizations, large family groups, dressing up and dressing down, church and school programs, theater, and many more topics. Photos with toys, costumes, etc would also enhance the exhibit. We can scan your photos and return them or you can scan your own at 1200 TIFF and send it to us. Chebeague childhood experiences and friendships contributed to the people we have become. In addition to sharing your photos and loaning some treasures from childhood, we hope you will share some of your favorite Chebeague childhood memories by emailing or mailing your thoughts to the Chebeague Historical Society: PO Box 28, Chebeague or chebeaguehistory@ gmail.com . For more information email the Museum or call Donna Damon. We hope this is our most inclusive exhibit yet, but it takes time to create an exhibit! Deadline for Submission is January 15, 2020. No exceptions.

Marty’s Memories - Hamilton Beach and Fog by Marty Trower

Going to Matinicus Island during the week after Labor Day has become an enthralling tradition for me now. There are two reasons why I don’t feel one bit disloyal to Chebeague. The first is that my partner, Lock, has been going there for that same week for about 25 years. I’m honored to have been invited to join him there for the last five. The second is that 65 years ago my parents, Gordon and Margaret Trower and their long-time great Chebeague friends Jack and Ginna Toohey and Henry and Nancy Hubbell, decided to take themselves out to Matinicus one long weekend in the summer of 1954. That idea started one of the biggest unexpected adventures of their lives. They were caught in hurricane Carol aboard the Mary A. This was a small water taxi type of boat back then used for sporadic public transportation to the remote island, twenty plus miles out to sea from Rockland. The Chebeague visitors had a harrowing time being buffeted and blown and drenched but were finally settled into their boarding house on Matinicus.I have black and white photos of men in oilskins scurrying in all directions, their backs shiny with blown rain and seawater, everyone trying to save what they could from destruction. The Chebeaguers were too were frantic with worry to see or enjoy much of Matinicus. They wanted to get back home to monitor their own boats and property.

the Gastons. They were afraid for our safety as the storm was raging in Casco Bay as well. We were allowed a quick outing and went with Mary Toohey to the front yard of the Soule sisters (now Jack Turner’s) house to watch. I remember having the air pulled out of my mouth when I tried to face the wind. You could lean back into it as if you were trying to lie down and the wind would hold you up. How that little scrawny body of mine stayed put, I wonder. Then I remember some sort of rope leash attached to me by my nervous adult sitter. So I had to go to Matinicus, to capture and enjoy what my parents and their friends never got to do. They returned to Chebeague to find that one boat had broken loose and crashed and was badly damaged on the shore and the other had capsized and sank at its mooring. There was damage everywhere in the bay and all over Maine. This year, while out on Matinicus, hurricane Dorian lurked in the area and I thought that maybe this was going to be an adventure for us. The water taxi and planes did not travel on that one day, but it turned out to be just a glancing hit. The only near calamity was when we walked on wild and beautiful South Sandy beach and a huge rogue wave came bounding in at us, knocking us all down. Lock’s precious Grateful Dead hat got thrown and sucked into the undertow and if not for brave, wet rescuers, this could have could have been a disaster.

I was eight and on Chebeague with my sister, staying with Canadian friends of my parents who owned the Barnacle before

The parking is reserved for com- muters who travel at least three days per week Monday - Fri- day. OFFICE HOURS CHANGE ON 10/1 Office will be closed on Fridays for the winter.

Winter Ferry Fares effective 10/1 Effective 10/1 Child 20 ride ticket books are reduced to $24.00 and Resident/Parking Permit Holder 10 ride ticket books are reduced to $37.00. Please check the application and terms and conditions care- fully to ensure you will qualify for a Cousins Island permit before applying for one. Applications for annual parking permits will be mailed in late October to current permit holders. The application will also be posted on the “Parking Service” page on our website and can be picked up at our office after 11/1/2019. Each year we receive more applications for the Cousins Is- land Lot than available spaces. Applicants for the Cousins Lot may be asked to prove residency by providing a copy of a driver’s license and/or vehicle registration. The deadline for Cousins Island lot applications is November 22, 2019. Applications received after that date will be given a Route One permit.

Reminders! The Town of Yarmouth has 14 designated spac- es at the Cousins Island Lot. Ten passes are annual parking permits issued by lottery by the Town of Yarmouth. The four daily spots are on a first come - first serve basis. Yarmouth polic- es the daily spots and issues tickets as need- ed. The third person to leave a message on the office phone after 6 PM on October 10th and says “Happy Hallow- een” will receive a ferry guest ticket book. Daily parking at Cous- ins Island is based on availability. Access to the lot is purely on a first come - first serve basis. Day parkers must be out of the lot by 5:30 PM. For the month of October, day parkers cannot enter the lot until 7 AM due to lack of space. Overnight parking at the Cousins Island lot is allowed only for persons holding a regular annu- al parking permit. CTC management re- serves the right to make exceptions as it deems appropriate.

Barging Junk Cars CTC will barge junk cars on a space available basis for no cost. Cars must run and have working brakes. The customer must load the car on the barge and unload it at Cousins. Dave’s Junk Yard in Freeport will pick up the car at the Cousins Lot. Their num- ber is 865-4702. if interested. The Independence ... ..is undergoing sea trials and Coast Guard inspections in the next couple of weeks. We do not have a definite date when she will come home.

Traveling with Dogs It seems that the number of dogs traveling on CTC has increased substantially. When dogs are on our ferry or bus, they must be leashed and, if aggressive, muzzled. Dogs are not allowed on ferry or bus seats. Finally, out of respect for other passengers and the neighborhood, please clean up after your dog. We pro- vide pet waste bags at both parking lots and on the wharf. Thank you!

The delivery date of the Inde- pendence has been changed by Washburn & Doughty due to delays in construction of other boats at their yard. The estimat- ed launch date is now 6/21 at 2 PM. The Independence will have to undergo sea trials and required testing for regulatory approval. Therefore, it is uncer- tain at this time when the Inde-

pendence will be home and able to carry passengers. We are planning a launch party at W&D in East Boothbay and are hopeful that many Islanders will be interested in joining us for that event. CTC will provide bus transportation to the launch. As plans are finalized we will post the details.

OCTOBER

We are pleased to announce that CTC boats (Islander, Independence, and Dovekie) will all have Automated Identification Systems (AIS) installed. The Islander’s AIS is operational now—the Dovekie’s will be working May 1st. You can track their location at www.marinetraffic.com/en/ais/home/shipid:442737/zoom:15 or down- loading an App. Suggested Apps will be posted on our Facebook page. Please be advised that there could be a several minute delay in the transmission of the data, so do not rely on the AIS to give you the vessel’s exact location . During the first or second week in May, Bartlett Tree will spray the Route One lot for brown-tail moth. The spraying should be completed before the first bus of the day. The spray may get on vehicles but it will not damage the paint. Customers are urged to park in the center rows of the lower part of the lot to minimize exposure. As soon as we have a definite date, we will post it. However, it would be prudent to park away from trees beginning the end of April.
