NUTRITION AND HEALTH Association of Dairy Intake with Protection Against Gastrointestinal Inflammation RESEARCHER: Danielle G. Lemay, USDA and UC Davis TIMELINE: 2 years (2019 and 2020) BACKGROUND: “A2” milk studies create the false impression that traditional dairy is bad for gut health. USDA Lemay lab preliminary data suggests that dairy intake does not cause gastrointestinal inflammation. The underlying concept is that dairy protects and is good for the gut. This project leverages a large investment from USDA by utilizing banked samples from the USDA Nutritional Phenotyping Study (cross-sectional study of 396 Californians). OBJECTIVE: Determine whether dairy intake is associated with protection against gastrointestinal inflammation. INDUSTRY BENEFIT: The proposed study will provide evidence of the true relationship between dairy intake and gut health in California consumers. OBJECTIVE: This internship will partner graduate level student interns with feed companies, and dairy consultants to provide real-world research and on-farm technical support experience, ultimately resulting in a more qualified workforce for the dairy and feed industries. INDUSTRY BENEFIT: The result will be leaders who can identify potential areas of concern and can use their scientific knowledge balanced with real world experience to make informed recommendations to enhance the sustainability of the dairy industry. CAPABILITY BUILDING Feed Industry Fellowship with a Focus on Feeding Systems RESEARCHER: Heidi Rossow, UC Davis TIMELINE: 1 year: July – June, 2019 BACKGROUND: Graduates from animal nutrition degree programs are often well trained in the science of nutrition but have no practical knowledge of the dairy industry.
