EXPERT REVIEW PANEL, METHOD BACKGROUND, AND CONCLUSIONS

Criteria for Vetting Methods to be considered: AOAC convened the Official Methods of Analysis SM (OMA) Expert Review Panel for Solids and Syrups that was held on Thursday, March 1, 2017 from 1:00pm to 4:00pm during the AOAC INTERNATIONAL Mid-Year Meeting that was held at Gaithersburg Marriott Washingtonian Center, located at 9751 Washingtonian Boulevard, Gaithersburg, Maryland 20878 USA. The purpose of the meeting was to review and discuss the proposed modification to AOAC Official Method 932.14: Solids in Syrups. The AOAC Research Institute announced a notification of a proposed change in status of AOAC First Action Official Method 932.14: Solids in Syrups [Final Action] as submitted by Cott Beverages. The open public comment period for the proposed modification of AOAC Official Method 932.14 was posted for a minimum of 30 days. The comment period closed on December 30, 2016. Comments were to be compiled, reviewed, and intended to obtain input on the proposed modification. All interested parties had an opportunity to submit comments. At the time of this meeting, we did not receive any comments regarding the proposed method modification. The study director for OMA 932.14 was Sam Khoury of Cott Corporation, located at 1011 10 th Avenue, Columbus, Georgia 31901 USA, who was present during the Expert Review Panel session. The candidate method (OMA 932.14) was reviewed and supplemental information was also provided to the reviewers which included the preliminary proposed modification, AOAC Final Action Method 932.14: Solids in Syrups, AOAC Final Action Method 988.06: Specific Gravity of Beer and Wort, and the single laboratory validation report. Criteria for Vetting Experts and Selection Process: The following eight (8) candidates were submitted for consideration by the Official Methods Board to evaluate candidate method for Solids in Syrups as per the Expert Review Panel (ERP) Policies and Procedures. The candidates were highly recommended and/or have demonstrated expertise via their submission to the AOAC Call for Experts and were vetted by the Official Methods Board. The experts are Sneh Bhandari, Jo Marie Cook, Mohamed Hamad, George Joseph, Dana Krueger, Eleftheria Katechaki, Tom Phillips, and Prem Virmani. Dana Krueger was vetted as the Expert Review Panel Chair. ERP Orientation: All ERP members have completed the mandatory AOAC Expert Review Panel Orientation Webinar. The ERP members originally completed the webinar in February, 2017. Expert Review Panel Meeting Quorum The meeting of the Expert Review Panel was held in person. A quorum is the presence of seven (7) members or 2/3 of the total vetted ERP, whichever is greater. Eight (8) out of the eight (8) members, were present and therefore met a quorum to conduct the meeting. Standard Method Performance Requirements (SMPRs): N/A Conclusion: The ERP reviewed AOAC OMA 932.14 and AOAC OMA 988.06 and have recommended revisions to both methods. The decisions have been captured and reflected in the meeting minutes. Subsequent ERP Activities: AOAC staff to submit revisions of AOAC OMA 932.14 and AOAC OMA 988.06 to the publications department.
