Recompense Fund News

The Recompense Fund is pleased to announce that we have been able to grant $46,900 of funds to our nonprofits so far in 2019. In July, we had a wonderful gathering of some of our nonprofits who shared information about their organizations and how the grants would help them. The Recreation Center, Kids’ Place, Commons, Chebeague Methodist Church, Historical Society, MacBeth program, and Chebeague Island School have all benefited

from our funding this year. We also offered an opportunity for the community to take part in a NAMI (National Alliance for Mental Health) conference. We are working now on our 2019 annual report that you will be receiving this fall. Please check out our website to learn more about The Recompense Fund at h ttps://www.recompensefund.com . The Recompense Fund is dedicated exclusively to Chebeague. It is a fund within the Maine Community Foundation, so if you would like to contribute now, please send your gift specifying “The Recompense Fund” to Maine Community Foundation, 245 Main Street, Ellsworth, ME 04605.

Marty’s Memories - Hamilton Beach and Fog by Marty Trower

I am still amazed by my interest in the life and times of my parents and grandparents and great grandparents. Of course, now it’s too late, really, as I’m at the age where I am intrigued and have questions but none of my relatives are alive to answer. Thank goodness for people like Donna Damon who seems to know how to blend the factual, fascinating details of her family’s past with her own memories and she sees how they become intertwined. I hope to learn from her one of these days. In the meantime, on foggy days like today, I am ingulfed by my own memories of the island in the summers of fifties and sixties. Days when we thought there was nothing to do because it was so foggy -but these usually turned out to be the best! I know it was one of those slow, dripping, fog days when my best childhood friend Maggie and I built our raft, the Sea Witch on Hamilton Beach. We used logs we found washed up on the shore. they were uneven in length and some had peeling bark still clinging to them. We used rope to bind the cross-pieces together. We nailed some flat green boards onto the frame. I think they must’ve been left over from when Merle Ross built a bathroom and a bedroom onto our cottage. Our cottage was always painted green. Mostly I was interested in the immediate of my life in those days, but I do remember another when I walked on the beach with my grandfather Trower on another fog draped day. My grandfather and grandmother had come to the Hamilton hotel for many years before I was born. My father had always spoken so wondrously about the hotel and his childhood and teen-aged years there and how sad it was that it had to be torn down during the war. I was hoping now that my grandfather would open about what he remembered about

the hotel and his years there and maybe we could talk about it. We got to the place which still exists today on the beach, where the stubs of the Hamilton Hotel pier once stood. A long, elegant pier stretched out on these pilings and there were a few benches on the edge to sit on. You could then stroll up a long boardwalk to the hotel itself. Maggie and I used to imagine what it would be like to dine in the hotel or play tennis in front of it. We explored the remnants of the disappearing grand place until the area got too overgrown to get around. But my poor grandfather seemed to remember nothing, I realized. He was grieving for my grandmother, Emily Fraser Trower, who had recently died. My grandmother was the one who discovered Chebeague for us, coming down by train in 1900 from Quebec City with her maiden aunt to the Hamilton Villa. Then, last week I attended the celebration of Bob Follette’s life at Bennet’s Cove. Bob and Mort ran the Island View house in the late fifties and early sixties. My grandparents still visited us from Montreal then, but our cottage lacked some basic luxuries, so they stayed at the Island View House. I remember when they were staying there, they brought us, (my sister and I) the most amazing dolls. We brought them down to Hamilton Beach. It was low tide.We wound up the keys on the backs of our dolls and dropped them face down into the saltwater. Lots of frothy fluttering and spitting followed and it was thrilling, but short- lived. I don’t remember seeing those magical wind-up swimming dolls again. I’ll bet all that salt and fog and moisture rusted up the moving parts of those miraculous plastic imitation swimmers and that was that; they were put into the past until deep thoughts brought back a tiny wisp of a memory.

Crew assistance will be available according to the schedule posted on the ferry and in the Island Calendar. number of instances where dogs lunge at other dogs. Also, other passengers may be allergic to dogs (or just not dog lovers) and object to a dog approaching them. Commercial Freight Policy Freight should be delivered by the 10:15 AM ferry. Freight should not be delivered by dual wheel vehicles. Customers who are not on the ferry must notify CTC of the de- livery in advance. All unaccompanied freight must display customer’s name. Freight must be picked up at the ferry directly after the boat re- turns to Chebeague. Freight fees must be paid upon delivery to Chebeague. Safety Policy We strive for the safe transporta- tion of all passengers to and from Chebeague. Weather conditions, tides, and other factors may af- fect the relative safety of board- ing the ferry. At the captain’s sole discretion, boarding of a passenger or passengers may be denied in unsafe conditions or circumstances.

Tickets CTC offers several types of ferry tickets for our customers. Island residents and parking permit holders qualify to purchase the discounted “green ticket”. Our deckhands are tasked with veri- fying that the passenger does, in fact, qualify to use this discount- ed ticket. Therefore, if the deck- hand does not recognize the pas- senger as a resident or parking permit holder, s/he will ask to see their parking permit ID card. Lately, our deckhands have found several instances of people trying to use the green ticket who do not qualify. Island resi- dents or parking permit holders give their green ticket to guests to pay for their ferry ride. This abuse of our policies put both the deckhand and the passenger in an uncomfortable situation. All island residents qualify for the green tickets. However, for parking permit holders, only the permit holder, spouse, and chil- dren 21 and younger qualify. Others must pay regular fares or purchase the 10-ride ticket. Dogs All dogs must be on a leash— even puppies. We have had a

The delivery date of the Inde- pendence has been changed by Washburn & Doughty due to delays in construction of other boats at their yard. The estimat- ed launch date is now 6/21 at 2 PM. The Independence will have to undergo sea trials and required testing for regulatory approval. Therefore, it is uncer- tain at this time when the Inde-

pendence will be home and able to carry passengers. We are planning a launch party at W&D in East Boothbay and are hopeful that many Islanders will be interested in joining us for that event. CTC will provide bus transportation to the launch. As plans are finalized we will post the details. OCTOBER

We are pleased to announce that CTC boats (Islander, Independence, and Dovekie) will all have Automated Identification Systems (AIS) installed. The Islander’s AIS is operational now—the Dovekie’s will be working May 1st. You can track their location at www.marinetraffic.com/en/ais/home/shipid:442737/zoom:15 or down- loading an App. Suggested Apps will be posted on our Facebook page. Please be advised that there could be a several minute delay in the transmission of the data, so do not rely on the AIS to give you the vessel’s exact location . During the first or second week in May, Bartlett Tree will spray the Route One lot for brown-tail moth. The spraying should be completed before the first bus of the day. The spray may get on vehicles but it will not damage the paint. Customers are urged to park in the center rows of the lower part of the lot to minimize exposure. As soon as we have a definite date, we will post it. However, it would be prudent to park away from trees beginning the end of April. My heartfelt thanks to everyone who assisted me in my emergency on July 4th at 2:15 am. With great speed the first responders, EMT’s, ambulance and dear Chebeague friends were by my side. It takes an island and I am forever grateful. On the road to recovery now and looking forward to the fall on Great Chebeague. Lucille King.

years of experience, caring and compassion to the school. When she moved to the island in 1999 she started working at the Island Commons where she has worked on and off for over 20 years. It was this work experience, she said, that gives her insight into state regulations and safe food practices. Her love of kids and the island make her the perfect fit for the job. Polly’s family history on Chebeague goes back four generations. Her first visit to the island was when she was two months old and she stayed with her grandmother, Ann Knight, at her cottage on Carter’s Point Road. She continued to be a “Summer Native” visiting her grandmother for years until she moved here permanently. In 2004 she married her husband, Kevin, and they both continue to live in the, now four seasons, cottage and raise their twins, Olivia and Alden. Kevin drives the island school bus in the winter and runs the water taxi in the summer and the twins start this year over at Yarmouth Middle School. Polly says she’s looking forward to being part of a team to help raise the island’s children and to teach the kids healthy eating practices, composting, recycling and life skills. She’s excited for the school year and can’t wait to start cooking and serving “Love on a plate”!

The first full year of school in the new schoolhouse has started and a welcomed addition to the staff is Polly Wentworth! Polly accepted the position of School Dietary and Facilities Manager in March of last year and helped organize and set up the new school kitchen. She served the students lunches and successfully completed two pizza Fridays before summer vacation started so she’s heading into this school year with confidence. Polly brings
